  • Tim Rich takes a look at the lack of options Roy Hodgson has in attack, and how it resembles the shallow depth of English talent in the Premier League:
Hodgson's decision to name his starting line-up before England face Moldova was a bold and confident one. However, with Daniel Sturridge and Wayne Rooney both injured, the choice of Rickie Lambert as England's central striker emphasised the dearth of talent available to him. Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott will play either side of Lambert at Wembley this evening.

  • Chief football correspondent Sam Wallace is at the game tonight, and he looks at how Greg Dyke's passionate plan can be implemented into reality:
It might sound like a niche-interest European political party but EPPP – the Elite Player Performance Plan – is the blueprint to preserve the future of the English footballer. Conceived by the Premier League, and endorsed by the Football Association under Greg Dyke's predecessor as FA chairman, David Bernstein, this is the major play to change English football.

the next generation a chance and cheer them on for tonights game

  • So what do people think of tonight's match? A walkover? Or perhaps a slightly tougher affair than first thought. Message in your thoughts and we'll re-post them. Also, don't forget to take part in our poll on the final result.
    9/6/2013 6:38:36 PM
  • Do we have faith in Rickie Lambert? Is the 31-year-old the answer to England's problems?
    9/6/2013 6:45:13 PM
  • Just 15 minutes until kick-off, and the stands are slowly filling up, although it isn't going to be a sell-out. The warm-ups have been completed and the final preparations are underway on the pitch. It all looks very red and white, and I am yet to see a Moldova fan here today...
    9/6/2013 6:46:42 PM
  • At least we have a Moldova national flag being unveiled on the pitch, alongside the St George's Cross, while the Three Lions banner is being passed around the South stand. Bit of a party atmosphere going on in Wembley tonight. You wouldn't know it was a World Cup qualifier...
    9/6/2013 6:50:23 PM
  • So far, 58% of you are backing a close win for the hosts, with 42& predicting a landslide win.
    9/6/2013 6:53:51 PM
  • Everyone ready? Here come the teams, led by Steven Gerrard and Alexandru Epureanu of Moldova.
    9/6/2013 6:54:33 PM
  • And here come the Anthems...
    9/6/2013 6:54:47 PM
  • A rousing rendition of 'God Save The Queen' rings out, as yet another St George's Cross is unveiled in the stands. A quick snap as the teams pose for the traditional squad photo, and we're nearly ready to go folks.
    9/6/2013 6:57:46 PM
  • 1 mins: And we're underway!
    9/6/2013 7:00:03 PM
  • 2 mins: An early free-kick for the hosts, and they're looking to keep the ball early on. Moldova win the ball though, and attempt to break quickly, but they're caught offside.
    9/6/2013 7:01:41 PM
  • 3 mins: Walcott wins a corner, which Gerrard takes from the right. Lambert gets on the end of it, but it goes some way over. An early warning from the Saints striker though.
    9/6/2013 7:02:35 PM
  • 4 mins: Walker gives the away deep in the England half, and Moldova work an opportunity, but Jagielka clears in the knick of time. England break quickly, and initial shouts for handball (it wasn't) are soon forgotten when Lambert unleashes a fierce shot which goes just wide.
    9/6/2013 7:04:31 PM
  • 5 mins: Walcott and Walker combine down the right, and the Spurs defender sends in a teasing cross that Lambert just mis0judges. It's all England early on.
    9/6/2013 7:05:21 PM
  • 6 mins: Jagielka gives the ball away needlessly, and he's soon sprinting back to make up for his error, but Gerrard gets their first to clear the ball, and gets a round of applause for his efforts. Moldova win a free-kick just inside the England half, and they choose to try work it into the box, but it comes to nothing.
    9/6/2013 7:07:16 PM
  • There's only one Roy Hodgson! Apparently not...

    9/6/2013 7:07:50 PM
  • 8 mins: England just keeping possession, much to the crowds humour. They should probably score a goal first, and it's taken just 8 minutes for the first Mexican wave to break out.
    9/6/2013 7:09:25 PM
  • 10 mins: Walcott and Lampard combine to try and free up some space for the winger, but he can't control the ball at the crucial moment and loses possession. I can hear a faint Moldova chant coming from somewhere, although where I'm not exactly sure as they really have brought very few fans with them.
    9/6/2013 7:10:53 PM
  • 12 mins: GOAL FOR ENGLAND!!
    9/6/2013 7:11:39 PM
  • 12 mins: Welbeck does brilliantly down the left, flicking the ball through Armas' legs before Cole sends him away. His cut-back falls to Lampard, who tees it up for Gerrard to smash into the bottom left-hand corner. A nice, cool finish from the England captain, and that's his 20th international goal.
    9/6/2013 7:13:13 PM
  • 14 mins: England are at it again quickly, with Lampard having a shot deflected over for a corner, which initially comes to nothing. Cole does well to feed the ball back to Gerrard, but his cross is woeful as it clears everyone in the box by some margin. We'll let him off though...this time.
    9/6/2013 7:14:34 PM
  • Fans are pleased with Stevie G's effort seemingly...

    9/6/2013 7:16:58 PM
  • 18 mins: Moldova just keeping the ball at the back, and they're preparing to bring on Alexandru Onica from the bench. He'll come on for Artur Ionita, who isn't heading straight down the tunnel. that's a strange one. Tactical? We'll see...
    9/6/2013 7:19:10 PM
  • 20 mins: Welbeck is looking very lively, as always, and his run gives Wilshere a chance to chase the ball, which is cleared for a corner. Gerrard takes it, and Lampard takes a clattering, as he clashes heads with his marker. He's ok though, and it's a goal kick
    9/6/2013 7:21:23 PM
  • 22 mins: Gerrard sells Welbeck short, but he makes up for it and manages to put the ball out for a throw. Moldova immediately waste it, and you can see why their 123rd in the world with that shocker.
    9/6/2013 7:23:12 PM
  • 24 mins: Joe Hart decides to get in on the act, giving Sidorenco the run around before he clears the ball out to the right. Wilshere finds himself in space, and runs towards goal, skips right and lashes a right-footed attempt straight at Namasco, who puts it out for a corner. Chance for Wilshere their to open his international account.
    9/6/2013 7:25:04 PM
  • 26 mins: GOAL FOR ENGLAND!!
    9/6/2013 7:26:37 PM
  • 26 mins: It's two from two for Rickie Lambert! Namasco makes a real has of saving Walcott's drive from the right, and he palms the ball across goal and straight into the path Lambert, who just has to direct it into the goal of his head to double his international account. The crowd roar with applause, and he seems to be becoming a bit of a favourite here at Wembley.
    9/6/2013 7:28:10 PM
  • Steven Gerrard opens the scoring for England

    9/6/2013 7:29:34 PM
  • 31 mins: Welbeck finds some space on the edge of the box, and he's urged to shoot by the crowd, He may wish he hadn't, as that's a poor attempt. Antoniuc lashes a 30-yard attempt at goal that sails into the crown for the visitors' first attempt on goal, and Wilshere get's up off the floor, rather displeased with a 50-50 challenge that sent him crashing to the ground.
    9/6/2013 7:32:29 PM

  • 33 mins: Georghiev tries to out-pace Jagielka as he charges into the England boss, but he only succeeds in giving away a goal-kick. A push from Cahill on Sidorenco gives away a free-kick just inside the England half though.
    9/6/2013 7:34:17 PM
  • 35 mins: A bit of uncertainty among the England defence causes a brief nervous moment, but Walker clears the ball down field to force Moldova to start from the back.
    9/6/2013 7:35:10 PM
  • 36 mins: Perhaps a combination of Moldova upping there game and England just taking their foot off the gas is allowing the visitor's back into the game, although they look far from threatening.
    9/6/2013 7:36:13 PM
  • 37 mins: Welbeck tries one flick too many, and Moldova again try to break, but Jagielka shepherds the ball back to Hart, who has had very little to do.
    9/6/2013 7:37:32 PM
  • 38 mins: Wilshere and Lampard are just starting to link up a bit more, but Onica leaves one high on Wilshere that catches him on the ankle, and Lampard will for for goal from around 30-yards out...
    9/6/2013 7:38:49 PM
  • 39 mins: But it's straight into the wall, and is eventually knocked out for a Moldova throw-in.
    9/6/2013 7:39:36 PM
  • 40 mins: Welbeck again tries to get down the left, and takes it right to the by-line before crossing it into the box. He's taken it too far though, as the linesman gives a goal kick.
    9/6/2013 7:40:32 PM
  • 41 mins: Another free-kick for England, although this one is further out and to the left, so Gerrard will whip it in. Namsco can only punch it out - surely he could've caught that one - but the ball drops kindly for his sake and the chance is gone.
