Wimbledon 2015: Latest news on Day 1

  • Wawrinka has played himself into a dominant first set lead and is now up 5-1;  Sousa hasn't helped himself with three double faults already.
    6/29/2015 4:31:37 PM
  • Lleyton Hewitt and Jarkko Nieminen have finally finished, with the Finn coming out on top. After a five-set thriller former Wimbledon champion Hewitt is soaking up the applause as he takes a lap of honour; this will be his final appearance at the tournament he won back in 2002.
    6/29/2015 4:36:53 PM
  • Wawrinka has the first set wrapped up very quickly, 6-2.
    6/29/2015 4:43:35 PM
  • Venus Williams is not taking her time either and has raced into a 4-0 first set lead in just 17 (!) minutes against fellow American Madison Brengle.
    6/29/2015 4:50:45 PM
  • Wawrinka is having a little bit more trouble in the second set, where he has been pulled back to 3-3 by the Portuguese.

Elsewhere, No 5 side Kei Nishikori is labouring against Simone Bolelli and is now in the fifth set, although he does hold a 3-1 lead and Venus Williams has now won eight games without Brengle being able to reply with one.

    6/29/2015 5:06:31 PM
  • Stan is still in the second set with Sousa proving harder to budge than he first appeared. It's now 6-5 to the No 4 seed, who is serving for the set.

He does that pretty quickly and is now one set away from victory - there's no games following this one on Centre Court today.
    6/29/2015 5:20:02 PM
  • No 5 seed Kei Nishikori has just beaten Simone Bolelli after another five-set marathon. The pair traded sets until the final one, when the Japanese finished strongly, taking the final set 6-3.

Elsewhere Venus Williams stormed through her opening game, beating Madison Brengle 6-0 6-0 in just 47 minutes.

  • Sousa continues to push Wawrinka, with the pair now at 4-4 in the third set.

On Centre Court, No 6 seed  Lucie Safarova has dropped her first set to world No 48 Alison Riske, 6-3.

  • Wimbledon 2015: Kei Nishikori struggles to five-set win over Simone Bolelli

The IndependentKei Nishikori, the fifth seed, had to work hard to secure his second round passage being taken to five sets in the Court One sunshine by Simone  Bolelli before winning 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
    6/29/2015 5:50:56 PM
  • Wawrinka and Sousa are now in a tie break in the third set - the Swiss is up 2-0 as we speak
    6/29/2015 5:58:57 PM
  • Naomi Broady, brother of Liam, is hoping to follow in his footsteps and record a first round win.

She's on the No 3 court against Colombian Mariana Duque-Marino, who is currently ranked No 126 in the world; Broady is down at No 208 but is holding her own in the first set with the score at 3-3.
    6/29/2015 6:01:50 PM
  • Wawrinka has turned it on in the tie break to book his place in the second round - he goes through after beating Joao Sousa 6-2 7-5 7-6 (7/3).

That's the action done on Centre Court, there aren't many high seeds still left to play but there's plenty of British interest this evening.

Naomi Broady is now 5-4 up in her first set while Heather Watson will play after Alison Riske and Lucine Safarova finish on Court 2. Surprisingly, Safarova (the six seed) is a set down and trailing 3-2 in the decisive second set. Lots of work to do.

  • Wimbledon 2015: Nick Bollettieri - Coaching from the side is not cheating – it’s just daft you are not allowed to do it

The IndependentYears ago I had a player at the academy called Lisa Bonder. She was pretty good, reaching the top 10. One day we went to a tournament, a big one.

  • Apologies for the interlude, I was just having a quick food break - it's tiring sitting in this chair watching the world's best players run around in 20 degrees.

Unfortunately the offering was more school canteen than strawberries and cream.

    Moving on...
    6/29/2015 7:00:26 PM
  •  No 6 seed Lucie Safarova has decided she doesn't want to be the first major upset of this year's tournament.  After losing the first set she fought back to win the second 7-5 and is now engaged in a 2-2 deadlock with Alison Riske in the decisive third set.

Heather Watson has been moved onto Court 12 because of those two and has lost her first game against Caroline Garcia, the No 32 seed. No idea what time they'll be finishing to be quite honest.

The highest seed playing in the men's tournament is Grigor Dimitrov (11) who is two sets up against Federico Delbonis.
    6/29/2015 7:04:01 PM
  • Naomi Broady is a set down to Duque Marino and trailing 5-3 in the second set - she'll need to channel brother Liam's resilience to come back from here.
    6/29/2015 7:05:24 PM
  • Heather Watson is struggling, already 4-1 down to Garcia.
    6/29/2015 7:15:56 PM
  • Naomi Broady could not emulate her younger brother and fell to a two set defeat to Mariana Duque-Marino, losing 7-6 6-3
    6/29/2015 7:38:45 PM
  • Heather Watson is still out there, lost the first set 6-1 and is now tied at 1-1 with Caroline Garcia.
    6/29/2015 7:39:11 PM
  • Watson has just held serve to take a 2-1 lead
    6/29/2015 7:39:22 PM
  • Watson is making a right fist of this and is back to 4-1 in the second set - we look to be heading for a third set between these two.

    6/29/2015 7:48:33 PM
  • Watson is now 5-3 up and serving but Garcia has won a couple of points to take it to 30-15...

But Watson wins four straight points to win the game and the set - 1-1 and we head into the decider.
    6/29/2015 8:00:17 PM
  • That's it, all over - the match has been suspended because of bad light.

We'll be back tomorrow for the conclusion of this match and live coverage from other matches, including Andy Murray's opener.

Thanks very much for joining us.
