Wimbledon 2015: Latest news on Day 1


    It sounds pretty comfortable on paper - 6-4 6-1 - but Serena Williams' win over Margarita Gasparyan was slightly more tricky than that. The World No 1 always sleeps her way through the early rounds and she never looked in doubt of losing, but it was far from vintage. 

    Still, plenty left in the tank for the tournament's heavy favourite.

    The IndependentThe sixth Wimbledon crown is on, as is that 21st grand slam title. Serena Williams made harder work of Russian qualifier Margarita Kasparyan, ranked 134 in the world, than she might, before progressing 6-4 6-1 in an hour and 34 minutes.

    Liam Broady is on the verge here! 5-3 up in the fifth set, what a huge victory it would be for the youngster...

    Matosevic is serving and it's 15-15. Error from Broady to lose a point but he comes back with an absolutely beautiful lob to make it 30-30...

    Match point now! 

    Matosevic faults the first serve, then they rally but Broady makes an error trying to hit down the line...

    It's back to deuce and now Matosevic has an ace to take advantage. But Broady comes again with a beautiful return to force an error...

    What a brilliant performance from Liam Broady, Court 18 has erupted! The 21-year-old has fought back from two sets down to beat Marinko Matosevic, a man ranked 43 places higher than him, to book a place in the second round of Wimbledon. 

    The wildcard is through on his debut in a Grand Slam!

    According to former player Pat Cash on BBC 5Live:

    "Broady's made some money there, at least £47,000 for winning his match, and that will keep him going for another few months. Players like Djokovic who earn millions of dollars each year don't need an extra £10,000 here or there, but to players like Liam it can make all the difference."

    Novak Djokovic has gone 5-4 ahead in the deciding third set, but Kohlschreiber is serving pretty well today and giving the world's best player a real good go of it..

    Wimbledon 2015: Novak Djokovic far from his best but has more than enough to beat Philipp Kohlschrebier

    Elsewhere, Kei Nishikori took the first set against Bolelli 6-3 and leads the second 2-1, Milos Ranoic won his first set 6-2 and former Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt - who plays in London for the final time before retiring - is currently 2-1 up against Jarkko Nieminen, although he is 3-0 down in the fourth set.

    Nick Kyrgios got himself in a bit of hot water earlier by shouting out "dirty scum" during his win over DIego Schwartzman. But the Australian has insisted that he was referring to himself and not the umpire:

    "Wouldn't bother me one bit," said Kyrgios when asked if he feared receiving a fine for his behaviour.
    "I wasn't referring to the ref at all there, it was towards myself.
    "But, yeah, obviously I knew you guys were going to ask me about that."

    Lleyton Hewitt has gone into a fifth set against Jarkko Nieminen and is currently winning 3-2. Kei Nishikori is tied up at 6-6 with Bolelli in the second set and Milos Raonic is making quick work of David Gimeno-Traver; he leads two sets to nil.

    Stan Wawrinka is now out on centre court for his match against Joao Sousa. The Portuguese is currently ranked No 46 in the world but is playing in just his second Wimbledon match after a first round defeat last year. 

    Wawrinka, of course, is coming off that brilliant French Open win against Novak Djokovic earlier this month.

    Lleyton Hewitt and Jarkko Nieminen have finally finished, with the Finn coming out on top. After a five-set thriller former Wimbledon champion Hewitt is soaking up the applause as he takes a lap of honour; this will be his final appearance at the tournament he won back in 2002.

    Venus Williams is not taking her time either and has raced into a 4-0 first set lead in just 17 (!) minutes against fellow American Madison Brengle.

    Wawrinka is having a little bit more trouble in the second set, where he has been pulled back to 3-3 by the Portuguese. 

    Elsewhere, No 5 side Kei Nishikori is labouring against Simone Bolelli and is now in the fifth set, although he does hold a 3-1 lead and Venus Williams has now won eight games without Brengle being able to reply with one.
