  • According to FlightAware, @realdonaldtrump's private plane has already left Boston. What a stooge.…

  • Less than 1 per cent of votes divided Obama and Romney in Ohio - although enough to ensure no automatic recount. We are still waiting for Romney to concede.

  • Shouts of 'Ryan 2016' at his party in Janesville. The king is dead, long live the king. #election2012

Still not clear, however, is whether Mr Obama can also prevail in the popular vote.  A failure to do so would only be a subplot to his victory but an important one that would surely hamper his ability to govern in a second term.

The disappointment for Republicans, by contrast, was crushing.  Surely a post-mortem in their ranks will now rage over which direction the party can take now after suffering two presidential losses in a row and whether it was harmed either by a faulty candidate or by the rightwards pull exerted on it by the Tea Party.

To what extent Mr Romney’s faith hurt him in the race is still a murky question, but it could have suppressed the evangelical vote which was so pivotal in putting George W. Bush into office for a second time in 2004.
    11/7/2012 5:16:51 AM
  • According to the BBC, Romney has not yet spoken to Obama, apparently waiting for the full vote count in Ohio. Obama would be past the magic number of 270 with or without Ohio. Bad loser?
    11/7/2012 5:18:27 AM
  • Hey guys. I'll tell you what this morning is not. It's not a vote for #Ryanomics. Or the #TeaParty. Or the ideology of #FoxNews.
  • ABC is calling Colorado, another of tonight's swing states, for Obama.

Without a strong mandate for the next four years, the chances of Obama achieving desperately needed bipartisan reform seems remote at best.

  • A lot of glum looking Republican supporters standing around at Romney's HQ in Boston, waiting for their candidate to come and say something.
    11/7/2012 5:25:26 AM
  • They're waiting around in Chicago as well, although the Democrat supporters look more like giddy teenagers waiting for the headline act at a music festival. Someone clink a glass - that usually helps to get the speeches going.

  • James Cusick was at the US Embassy in London tonight, click here to read his account of the election...
As the results started to come in, the audience whooped and washed Big Macs down with bubbly.

  • Florida. We won't get a result until tomorrow - but with 97% of votes counted, it's 49.9 to 49.3 in favour of Obama.
  • Wearing red trousers and drinking to forget at Romney / Ryan HQ

  • The stage is set for Obama, although tradition means he will wait before addressing his supporters until Romney has conceded.

  • RT @missy__m: .@guyadams As they say in Sweden - 1% of the people own 99% of the red trousers.
  • Associated Press and CNN are calling Virginia for Obama. Surely that'll be the nail in the coffin for Romney.
    11/7/2012 5:44:06 AM
  • Will Virginia falling finally persuade @MittRomney to concede? #election1012 @Independent
  • Once Virginia is out the way, it'll only leave Florida - although the result in the Sunshine State may not be known for some time, it's incredibly close.

    11/7/2012 5:48:47 AM
  • I am standing 30 feet from the podium where Mitt Romney will be conceding in approximately five minutes.

  • A man has walked on stage with a leather binder. It presumably contains a copy of Mitt's speech
  • So that's Virginia confirmed, leaving just the result in Florida. This could well be the final state fact of the evening folks...

STATE FACTS - VIRGINIA: Seven Presidents are buried in Virginia: Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Tyler, Taft and Kennedy. And now it would seem, are Romney's dreams of becoming the 45th President of the United States.
    11/7/2012 5:51:29 AM
  • It would appear Romney is finally about to make an appearance at his HQ in Boston.
    11/7/2012 5:52:09 AM
  • Secret Service arrive. It's time. Drunk woman complains "I can't see shit!" crowd chants "Mitt Mitt Mitt"
  • Romney has called Obama to concede according to reports including the AP below

  • Crowd now singing God Bless America
  • Romney is now on stage...
    11/7/2012 5:55:31 AM
  • I have just called President Obama to congratulate him on his victory.
    11/7/2012 5:56:25 AM
  • Romney on his wife Ann...
She would have been a wonderful first lady.
    11/7/2012 5:59:49 AM
  • Romney's concession speech...
I ran for election because I'm concerned about America.
    11/7/2012 6:02:18 AM
  • Romney's concession speech...
The nation chose another leader, and so Ann and I join with you to pray for him and for this great nation.
    11/7/2012 6:02:53 AM
  • Romney's short speech comes to a close - a classy concession.
    11/7/2012 6:04:43 AM
  • It's now Obama's turn to address his supporters. He should be on stage shortly...
    11/7/2012 6:05:55 AM
  • I can't wait to hear from all the Tory twits, here and elsewhere, who come out saying Romney lost because he wasn't conservative enough.
  • 11/7/2012 6:11:11 AM
  • RT @indecision: Young Obama would have been so disappointed that old Obama can't celebrate Colorado's marijuana law.
  • White House releases photo of Obama & Biden, with wives in background, embracing at news of re-election
  • Security at Obama's HQ is becoming more noticeable - the President will be out soon.
