The Masters: The latest news on Day 4 at Augusta

Adam Scott celebrates his Masters triumph
by Charles Reynoldson Apr 14, 2013 at 11:59 PM
The Independent's coverage of day four of The Masters has reached its dramatic conclusion with Australia's Adam Scott emerging victorious after a tense sudden death playoff with Argentina's Angel Cabrera.

Both Scott and Cabrera birdied the final hole in round four to finish on nine under, with Jason Day ending up second on seven under after just slipping up crucially towards the end of the round.

Brendt Snedeker and Marc Leishman both started the day strongly in contention for the title but their challenge faded as the day went on and they ended tied for fourth place at five under with Tiger Woods who unsuccessfully tried to mount a dramatic final day comeback.

Elsewhere England's Lee Westwood also started with an outside chance of victory but was unable to take his chances and ended up three under par.

To relive all the action from this evening's dramatic golf see below:

    -9:  Adam Scott, Angel Cabrera
    -7: Jason Day
-5: Tiger Woods, Marc Leishman, Brandt Snedeker
    -4: Thorbjorn Olesen, Sergio Garcia

    Selected others: -3 Westwood, +1 Bernhard Langer, +2 Rose, +4 Donald (5), +4 McIlroy (12); +8 Mickelson (17); +12 Guan (18)

  • The Independent's Kevin Garside in Augusta has some advice for Angel Cabrera on the 12th hole:
Angel in Bubba country - play it left handed son Kevin Garside via Twitter at 9:57 PM

    4/14/2013 9:26:43 PM
  • Thorjborn Olesen finishes his 18 holes with a bogey for a score of 68 to end -4 overall. The young Dane has had quite a debut at The Masters and were it not for a 78 in the first round he would surely have been in with a great chance of winning.
    4/14/2013 9:29:24 PM
  • Day closes the gap

Jason Day birdies the 13th hole, for the fourth consecutive time this Masters, and cuts Angel Cabrera's lead at the top to one shot. Day is now -7 overall. Meanwhile the BBC are showing a cutaway about the turtles that inhabit the course.
    4/14/2013 9:32:37 PM
  • Aussie, Aussie, Aussie

Marc Leishman blows a chance to join Jason Day on -7 and has to settle for par on the 13th hole. However Adam Scott doesn't make the same mistake and birdies the hole to join his compatriot one shot off the top.
    4/14/2013 9:38:02 PM
  • Drama on the 13th hole as leader Angel Cabrera hits a difficult shot out of the trees but narrowly misses landing on the green, his ball instead falling into the tiny stream that looks straight out of Bilbo's garden in Lord of the Rings.
    4/14/2013 9:42:43 PM

Jason Day holes an excellent putt on the 14th hole for his second consecutive birdie and he is now the new leader as Cabrera bogeys the 13th. Are we going to see the first Australian Masters winner?
    4/14/2013 9:45:03 PM
  • Jason Day off the tree and into the middle of the fairway. I think his time has come. #greenjacket Alex Butcher via Twitter at 10:46 PM

Jason Day getting a lot of stick for luck on here. he has been immense in the last 3 days and deserves his luck. Andrew Goodall via Twitter at 10:47 PM
Jason day unbelievable luck- got to win it now... Andy via Twitter at 10:47 PM

    4/14/2013 9:48:46 PM
  • A rainy day four of The Masters

    4/14/2013 9:51:02 PM
  • Tiger on the prowl?

Is Tiger Woods going to make a very late push for the title? The American now has two birdies in his last three holes and moves to -5 with three holes to play. A strong finish and some mistakes from his rivals could see him in with a shout.
    4/14/2013 9:54:47 PM
  • However Woods blows a relatively straightforward birdie chance on the 15th and he fails to close the gap further.
    4/14/2013 9:56:31 PM
  • Angel Cabrera had a two shot lead coming into the back nine but bogeys on the 10th and 13th have seen him slip to second. He has a shot at a birdie on the 14th but he can't take it and stays second on -7.
    4/14/2013 9:59:08 PM
  • Leader Jasoon Day is having an excellent back nine, and he now has three consecutive birdies. The Australian opens up a two shot lead to go -9. Meanwhile his compatriot Adam Scott plays an excellent approach shot on the 15th to keep up the pressure on Day.
    4/14/2013 10:01:43 PM
  • 31% of people still think Angel Cabrera is going to go home with the green jacket, do you agree? Take our poll here
    4/14/2013 10:06:01 PM
  • Westwood watch

Lee Westwood's search for a maiden Major win will go on, the Englishman has finished his fourth round and ends with a score of 71 to finish -2 overall. It looks like being a top ten finish but not the win he would have desperately wanted.

    4/14/2013 10:09:22 PM
  • Tight at the top

Adam Scott is on the charge with another birdie at the 15th and not long after Jason Day bogeys the 16th meaning the two Aussie's are tied at the top.
    4/14/2013 10:13:04 PM
  • Angel Cabrera misses a birdie chance on the 15th to tie for the lead and doesn't get much sympathy from England cricketer Craig Kieswetter:
Cabrera you wally!!! Craig Kieswetter via Twitter at 11:06 PM

    4/14/2013 10:19:49 PM
  • Adam Scott has a chance for a birdie and the lead on the 16th but he can't take it, the ball rolling agonisingly close to the hole.
    4/14/2013 10:21:24 PM
  • Brandt Snedeker stops the rot on the back nine with a birdie on the 15th to take him to -5. Can he mount a challenge after appearing to blow it earlier in the round?
    4/14/2013 10:23:17 PM
  • April showers

    4/14/2013 10:26:35 PM
  • Angel Cabrera clearly hasn't taken Kieswetter's criticism to heart because the Argentine pulls out a birdie with a fantastic long putt at the 16th to move back into equal first place.
    4/14/2013 10:28:34 PM
  • Meanwhile Jason Day is going the other way, the Aussie bogeys the 17th and drops down to second on -7.
    4/14/2013 10:30:35 PM
  • Tiger Woods has finished up with a fourth round score of 70 that leaves him -5 overall. It was a valiant effort but baring a total meltdown from the three players ahead of him it seems Tiger's Masters challenge is over. He just couldn't quite pull things back after his two-shot penalty in the second round.
    4/14/2013 10:33:24 PM
  • The final run in

So with all the remaining players onto the final two holes, this is how things stand:

Scott and Cabrera are tied for first on -8, the Aussie has one hole to play the Argentine two.

Day is one shot behind on -7 also with one hole to play.

Snedeker has two holes to play but looks out of the running on -5.
    4/14/2013 10:37:27 PM
  • Who do you want to win?
I want Cabrera to win for the simple fact I've yet to hear him shout something entirely futile at his ball. #Masters Gavin Brown via Twitter at 11:37 PM

Would love to see Scott win the masters! Come on!! #masters #greenbook Leon Iacono™ via Twitter at 11:37 PM

I want this angel Cabrera to win the masters. Brian Cołe ⚾ via Twitter at 11:37 PM

Adam Scott deserves to win this after what happened at the open last year #masters Eoin Doyle via Twitter at 11:37 PM

    4/14/2013 10:39:24 PM
  • Day is not totally out of things and he gives himself a chance of getting back in the mix with a good approach shot onto the 18th green. Scott plays a less good shot and narrowly avoids going into the bunker. Is the pressure getting to him?
    4/14/2013 10:42:03 PM
  • Angel Cabrera comes within less than an empanada's width of birdieing the 17th and surely sealing victory but the ball somehow just misses the hole and he stays tied for first.
    4/14/2013 10:44:55 PM
  • Jason Day can only manage par on the final hole so he stays on -7 and it looks like he is out of things. However Cabrera and Scott still have the 18th hole to play. This is going to the very last...
    4/14/2013 10:46:45 PM
  • So it all comes down to the final hole with Cabrera and Scott tied for first place.

Cabrera tees off and lands it solidly on the fairway with an excellent drive.
    4/14/2013 10:48:06 PM
  • Scott meanwhile has a long putt for a birdie and HE MAKES IT! The Australian is now in pole place to take home the green jacket. What a putt!
    4/14/2013 10:52:49 PM
  • Fellow countryman Shane Warne gives Scott the seal of approval:
WOW !!!!!!! What about the putt from Adam Scott, absolutely awesome.... Well done you little beauty, go you good thing..... Shane Warne via Twitter at 11:53 PM

    4/14/2013 10:55:18 PM
  • So can Angel Cabrera find a response? YES! The Argentine plays a fantastic shot onto the green which lands only a couple of feet away from the hole. He now has an excellent chance for a birdie to tie things up again.
    4/14/2013 10:57:02 PM
  • Angel Cabrera with the putt to tie things up at the top... and he sinks it. The Masters will go to a playoff.
    4/14/2013 11:00:57 PM

Angel Cabrera and Adam Scott will face each other in a playoff to decide who wins this year's green jacket. What a finish.
    4/14/2013 11:03:34 PM
  • So will Adam Scott bring Australia its first Masters triumph or can Angel Cabrera make Argentines everywhere from Buenos Aires to the Vatican very happy with a win here.
    4/14/2013 11:13:01 PM
  • Scott to tee off first and it lands nicely on the fairway...
    4/14/2013 11:14:13 PM
  • Cabrera follows with a thumping drive that is marginally better than his rival's but neither man has slipped yet.
    4/14/2013 11:15:19 PM
  • Adam Scott celebrates his dramatic 18th hole birdie

    4/14/2013 11:16:39 PM
  • Jason Day saw his challenge falter at the end

    4/14/2013 11:18:50 PM
  • Scott to take his second shot... and it lands just on the green but trickles back off and could have done with a couple of extra yards.
    4/14/2013 11:20:02 PM
  • Cabrera takes his shot and the ball also lands on the green before ending up very close to Scott's. Nothing separates the two men so far. Cabrera was unable to repeat the excellent approach shot he played on this hole to set up this playoff.
    4/14/2013 11:22:19 PM
  • Cabrera is up first and hoping to chip this into a good position and the Argentine plays a fantastic shot. The ball just trickles past the right hand edge of the hole.
    4/14/2013 11:23:44 PM
  • Scott is up now but can't play as good a shot however the ball is still only a few feet away from the hole. Advantage Cabrera but only just.
    4/14/2013 11:24:44 PM
  • No nerves though from Scott who sinks the putt for par. Cabrera now has to tap his putt in... which he does and both players will go to the 10th in this sudden death playoff.
    4/14/2013 11:25:58 PM
  • Cabrera celebrates his tying birdie on the 18th

    4/14/2013 11:28:24 PM
  • Both players tee off on the 10th, Cabrera pulling out the one iron and blasting the ball marginally ahead of Scott's but honours fairly even after the first shot.
    4/14/2013 11:29:47 PM
  • Bad light stops play?

Those of you hoping this will be decided tonight could be disappointed with the news that it is fairly dark in Augusta which could make any play after this hole difficult.
    4/14/2013 11:32:00 PM
  • Cabrera hits a fantastic second shot which lands on the green about ten feet from the hole.

Scott however shows no sign of feeling the pressure and follows up with an excellent shot of his own.
    4/14/2013 11:34:35 PM
  • Cabrera comes within a milimetre of a birdie here but the ball stops agonisingly just before the lip.

Scott now has a chance to win it with a long putt...
    4/14/2013 11:38:00 PM

    4/14/2013 11:38:48 PM
  • What a finish! Adam Scott sinks a long putt brilliantly to become the first Australian to win the coveted green jacket. Heartbreak for Angel Cabrera who could scarcely have come any closer to taking the title.

  • Now for the presentation of the green jacket.

An achievement for most 14-year-olds is getting out of bed early in the morning, Tianlang Guan has certainly topped that. He ends as the highest placed amateur at The Masters.

Last year's winner Bubba Watson slips Adam Scott into his green jacket and it's official, Australia has its first Masters winner.
