  • Time for an Englishman to wear Green?

The IndependentIt is 20 years since an Englishman won the Masters - the one and only Nick Faldo with his famous tracking, catching and sinking of the Great White Shark, Greg Norman, on the final day back in 1996. The Australian led the field by six on that Sunday morning, Faldo won by four shots by close of play following a solid, meticulous round of 67. While Norman crumbled, Faldo was calm and cool.

  • In the hole! A complete guide to the Augusta National course

The IndependentFrom the Tea Olive tee-off to holing out on the Holly, all 18 holes at Augusta National will pose a different challenge to the competitors invited to compete in the 80th Masters tournament. It’s where memories have and will be made, from Tiger Woods’ incredible chip-in on the 16th in 2005, Bubba Watson’s almost-impossible approach ion the 10th in his 2012 play-off for the title, and Arnold Palmer’s crowning of Amen Corner – the stretch from 11, 12 and 13 – back in 1958 when the American secured his first Masters Championship.

  • Masters tee-times for first and second rounds

The IndependentRory McIlroy faces a lengthy wait before he can begin his bid to become the sixth player to complete the career grand slam at Augusta National this week. McIlroy will be the very last man in the 89-strong field to hit his opening tee shot in the Masters after being drawn in the final group at 2:01pm local time for Thursday's first round. The four-time major winner, who was fourth last year, will partner Ryder Cup team-mate Martin Kaymer and America's Bill Haas in the first two rounds of the year's first major championship.

  • McIlroy pines for 2014 when he – not Spieth or Day – was unbeatable

The IndependentIt sounded like a state of the nation address, a proclamation of intent, a road map to restoring one of the greatest talents in golf to the summit of the game. It was Rory McIlroy at the Masters, responding to the challenge of Jason Day and Jordan Spieth at the first major of the season.

    4/7/2016 11:20:00 AM

We'll have infrequent updates this afternoon before we really settle into the action from 7.30pm tonight.
    4/7/2016 12:02:10 PM
  • Just over an hour in and current world No 41 Thongchai Jaidee in the lead at two under after three holes. World No 5 Rickie Fowler didn't have the greatest start, going two over on his first hole. Bernd Wiesberger is the only other player under par, one shot under after four holes.
    4/7/2016 2:08:20 PM
  • The first players to tee off are just about half way through at the moment, and it's Bernd Wiesberger who is setting the pace at the top, as the only player two under par. Another 11 players, including defending champions Jordan Spieth (four holes), Rickie Fowler (six holes) and Lee Westwood (six holes) are a shot under.

Steven Bowditch is having a tough time and is already five shots over par after 12 holes, but none of the big names are suffering just yet.
    4/7/2016 3:14:19 PM
  • We have our first man to reach three-under today and it's Jordan Spieth.

The defending champion makes birdie at eight to take lead all for himself. He's aiming to become the fourth player in Masters history to defend the green jacket and present it to himself on Sunday.

The others? Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods. Illustrious company.
    4/7/2016 4:31:01 PM
  • Jordan Spieth (-4) remains in front but the Texan's not had it all his own way over the course of the last hour.

A loose tee shot on the 11th landed among the pine needles, leaving him with quite a job on.

Not to worry. He somehow, quite brilliantly, finds the left fringe of green and effortlessly put to save par, thereby retaining his two shot lead.

Paul Casey, Hideki Matsuyama, Daniel Berger and Keegan Bradley trail him on two-under, while Dustin Johnson and Lee Westwood are among the chasing pack on -1.
    4/7/2016 5:15:15 PM
  • Spieth birdies the 13th - moves to five under through 14. Superb effort in tricky conditions.
    4/7/2016 6:08:51 PM
  • Westwood will be angry, drops shot on 18 to finish at one under.
    4/7/2016 6:24:57 PM
  • Spieth has to settle for par on par 5 15th. Remains 5 under. Chance missed - these boys always fancy themselves to pick up shots on the par 5s
    4/7/2016 6:28:08 PM
  • Amazing tee shot from Casey (3 under) at par 3 16th. Falls and stops just yards from pin. Spieth follows but makes a hash of it. Way off target but misses bunker. Work to do to make par
    4/7/2016 6:33:12 PM
  • Rory McIlroy pars the first - solid start in quest for the Grand Slam. Meanwhile, America's Rickie Fowler is 7 over on the 17th
    4/7/2016 6:35:38 PM
  • Jason Day on the charge. Another birdie for the Aussie to move to three under after 5. Paul Casey taps in at 16 to go to four under after his top tee shot. Brilliant from Jordan Spieth as he rescues par with nice chip and ballsy putt. Spieth -5, Casey -4, Day -3
    4/7/2016 6:38:53 PM
  • Rory McIlroy birdies the second. Cream rising to the top already
    4/7/2016 6:40:07 PM
  • Jordan Spieth makes par on 17. One to play remains five under. Defending champ will be double chuffed if he can finish with a 67
    4/7/2016 6:58:08 PM
  • Paul Casey drops shot on 17 - moves back to three under alongside the beautifully named American Brandt Snedeker
    4/7/2016 6:59:40 PM

    4/7/2016 7:03:09 PM
  • Justin Rose curls a lovely putt in to move to three under after 13
    4/7/2016 7:06:43 PM
  • Stop it Jordan Spieth! Champ nails four footer to grab a birdie on 18. Round of 66. Catch him if you can. Paul Casey pars to finish with a 69. Rory McIlroy drops shot on four as he slides a 7 foot putt past the hole. Drops back to level. Work to do to claim bogey too as it runs a bit beyond the hole
    4/7/2016 7:10:18 PM
  • Bubba drops shot on 9 - leaves himself with long putt which slides past - dips to 2 under
    4/7/2016 7:17:11 PM
  • Jason Day gives himself a chance of a birdie to jump up the board and into joint second on four under
    4/7/2016 7:20:40 PM
  • Jason Day makes birdie with five foot putt - four under after 8 for the world No 1. Watch out Spieth! Surely Day can't better a 66? Conditions expected to toughen up for late starters as wind makes greens quicker
    4/7/2016 7:24:52 PM
  • Justin Rose moves to four under as he nails a downhill left to right putt on the 14th. Great effort from England's top player
    4/7/2016 7:29:55 PM
  • Ireland's Shane Lowry joins the party. Is on four under after six. Rory tee shot with 7 iron on par 3 6th goes all wonky
    4/7/2016 7:32:40 PM
  • Oh my giddy aunt. Jason Day plays a peach into the green on the ninth with his second shot. Tap in for birdie after ball pitches and spins back just past the hole. Coulda been an eagle. World No 1 will be out in 31!
    4/7/2016 7:35:29 PM
  • Jason Day could do some real damage here. Playing beautifully and trails Spieth by just the one shot with the back nine to play.
    4/7/2016 7:37:11 PM
  • Justin Rose (-4) putts on par 3 16th. Putting at a right angle over about 30 feet. Ball turns but mooches on by leaving work left for par
    4/7/2016 7:39:07 PM
  • Justin Rose misses par putt on 16 - drops to three under. Pays for tee shot not catching the slope and trickling down to hole
    4/7/2016 7:42:32 PM
  • Shane Lowry (-4) second shot on par 4 7 leaves a monster putt for birdie. Nice effort from the Irishman though with the putter - leaves a three-footer for par. Rickie Fowler, by the way, shot an eight over. Ugly golf.
    4/7/2016 7:46:06 PM
  • Justin Rose plays safe on 17. Perfect drive, follows it with safe iron into middle of green. Regrouping after dropped shot on 16.
    4/7/2016 7:50:28 PM
  • Jason Day second shot on 10, coming out of light rough. Leaves himself with long, downhill putt for biridie and share of lead. Be happy to par it though from there
    4/7/2016 7:52:07 PM
  • Bubba in the trees on par 4 11. Nice rescue to land front edge of green from the American though
    4/7/2016 7:53:21 PM
  • Rory's back! Barely touches 8ft putt at the 7th and watches it trickle down hill and into the hole. Moves to one under
    4/7/2016 7:56:00 PM
  • Jason Day with birdie putt at 10 - massive swing from left to right through the shadows downhill. Leaves it well short as it doesn't quite catch down slope. Augusta bites back... Big Phil misses par putt on 18 to shoot a 72. Wind picking up.
    4/7/2016 7:59:55 PM
  • Solid tee shot from Justin Rose (-3) on 18. Right down the middle. Jason Day misses par putt on 10 - takes a bogey and drops to four under. Spieth, by the way, didn't bother with any bogeys...
    4/7/2016 8:01:53 PM
  • Bubba duffs ickle par putt on 11 - drops to one under. Bubba seems to think the wind took hold of the ball. Naughty wind.
    4/7/2016 8:03:36 PM
  • Justin Rose puts a beauty on the green at 18. Gives himself 7footer for birdie. That'd be lovely way to sign off day one for the Englishman
    4/7/2016 8:06:33 PM
  • Jason Day in the pine straw off the tee on 11. Should be ok though
    4/7/2016 8:08:33 PM

    4/7/2016 8:12:33 PM
  • Justin Rose can't sink putt on 18 and finishes three under. He won't mind one bit. Super round in tricky, gusty conditions leaves him right in the hunt. Can't win it on day one etc etc
