The Masters - Day Three LIVE

  • Hello and welcome to The Independent's live coverage of day three from Augusta National.
    4/9/2016 9:30:07 AM
  • The early starters have begun their third rounds, with Bubba Watson the first man out after sneaking into the cut on +6 after Jordan Spieth's difficult finish on Friday night. The American has not had a great start though, dropping a shot at the first on his way to +2 for the day thru 7.

Actually, there's very few red numbers on the board to speak of, with only Victor Dubuisson and Webb Simpson recording below par scores as they partner each other around Augusta. They're currently out on the fifth.
    4/9/2016 3:23:35 PM
  • It looks like it will be yet another tough day out on the Augusta National course, with very few players under par. Early movers include Brooks Koepka, JB Holmes and Bernhard Langer, who are all -1 thru four, three and two respectively to move back to level-par. While that may not seem all that impressive, only two other golfers are currently under par, with not one on -2.
    4/9/2016 6:08:31 PM
  • Just as a fourth player moves to -1 for the day and even par overall in Smylie Kaufman, Koepka drops a shot at the fifth and drops back to +1.
    4/9/2016 6:23:06 PM
  • So are you cheering on Rory McIlroy or Jordan Spieth?

    4/9/2016 6:26:23 PM
  • Langer & Day

Is Bernhard rolling back the years? The German is the first man to move to two-under for the day and -1 for the tournament when he birdies the fifth, putting him just three shots behind leader Spieth who is preparing to tee-off alongside Rory McIlroy.
    4/9/2016 6:50:05 PM
  • Matsuyama & Aphibarnrat

It's a good start for Hideki Matsuyama as the Japanese golfer birdies the second to join Scott Piercy and Danny Lee in a tie for third.

Kevin Na eyes up a putt on the third hole

    4/9/2016 7:00:50 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

It's a good start for Rory as he lands a tricky putt on the opening hole to make par, with Spieth looking to match him. He does just that, finding the right edge of the cup, and the big two move on to the second with their scores intact.
    4/9/2016 7:03:36 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

It's advantage Spieth as the reigning Masters champion birdies the second, with McIlroy only able to add another par to see the gap extend to two shots.

    Langer & Day

The run can't continue for Bernhard Langer as he records a bogey at the seventh to drop back to level par.
    4/9/2016 7:23:10 PM
  • Langer & Day

Langer is giving me the runaround here, but it's good news for fans of the German as he birdies eight to immediately get his shot back on return to -1. It's been a mixed start for his playing partner Jason Day, as he also birdies eight after a bogey at seven.
    4/9/2016 7:31:39 PM
  • Langer & Day

If only Langer could fins some consistency, he could be out front with Spieth! The veteran follows up his birdie at eight with a bogey at nine and drops down back to equal par.
    4/9/2016 7:45:08 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

Disaster for Rory as he drops a shot at the fourth, although he nearly makes up for it immediately by knocking a long, long putt within millimeters of the hole with his birdie putt at five. Spieth has a very similar shot to stretch the lead to four shots, but he can't take it either and he retains a three-shot lead over McIlroy alone.
    4/9/2016 8:02:13 PM
  • On his way to history?
Reigning Masters champion Jordan Spieth eyes up a putt on the first hole

    4/9/2016 8:09:13 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

Spieth may only have one birdie today, but he is standing out form the rest with four excellent par saves today that could well prove the difference come the end of tomorrow's round. Only four players are under par for the tournament, with McIlroy joining his playing partner in recording pars at the par-three sixth.
    4/9/2016 8:14:45 PM
  • Langer & Day

Both drop a shot at the 12th after finding trouble in the green-side bunker, with Langer dropping back to level par and Day now over par.

    Matsuyama & Aphibarnrat

Matsuyama joins McIlroy on -1 after he birdies the eighth and returns to under par for the day, one of very few men who can boast that one what is proving to be a difficult day on the greens.
    4/9/2016 8:23:53 PM
  • Snedeker & Kjeldson

American Brandt Snedeker hasn't enjoyed the easiest of days so far having dropped two shots to drop down to one over for the tournament, but he gets one back with a superb putt on the eighth to get back to evens and a tie for sixth. Soren Kjeldson quickly follows suit and moves up the leaderboard to join Scott Piercy in a tie for fourth on -1.
    4/9/2016 8:29:27 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

Both give up a shot at the tricky seventh, with Spieth dropping back to -4 after drifting a long-range effort past the hole, while McIlroy replicates the American's effort to find himself on -1 and in a tie with Kjeldson and Piercy, leaving Matsuyama in outright second all on his own.
    4/9/2016 8:32:44 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

Spieth sends his drive off the eighth tee right, but it's alright compared to McIlroy who finds the sand and will be forced to la up rather than attack the green on the par five. Instead he fires his third effort onto the green, and will have a long putt for a birdie.
    4/9/2016 8:41:44 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

That's why he's the reigning Masters champion. Having also laid up with his second, Spieth fires his third to with four foot of the hole, and that should be his second birdie of the day once he reaches the green.
    4/9/2016 8:45:14 PM
  • Langer & Day

Perfection from Jason Day! The world No 1 lands a monster 40-foot putt on the 14th to record back-to-back birdies to join McIlroy on -1 and mean that the so-called "Big Three" are in the top four of the Masters leaderboard.

    Spieth & McIlroy

McIlroy can't convert his birdie putt, but he does leave a short-range effort that sees the Northern Irishman save par. Spieth goes one better though, and gets the birdie to restore his three-shot lead and move back out to -5.
    4/9/2016 8:54:35 PM
  • Langer & Day

After Day's monster putt, Langer promptly follows suit and holes out from the edge of the green to join Day and McIlroy on -1 along with Piercy and Kjeldson.

    Spieth & McIlroy

It's proven a frustrating day so far for McIlroy as he makes the turn +2 having taken another par at nine. Spieth meanwhile turns at -1 after recording a comfortable four.
    4/9/2016 9:05:12 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

More problems for McIlroy at the start of the back nine as he hooks his tee shot into the trees on the left. He gets a half break as the bal manages to find a way out of the bushes to give him a shot, but he won't be able to make the green from there.

    Willett & Garcia

England's Danny Willett birdies the 12th to join the swelling group of players on -1, but one player has just departed that list...

    Langer & Day

...and that person is Bernard Langer, as he follows up with another birdie on 15 to join Matsuyama on -2 in a share for second!
    4/9/2016 9:11:49 PM
  • Spieth & Day

Spieth is giving the former world No 1 a lesson here. While McIlroy is forced to hit out from behind a tree onto the fairway, Spieth hits his second shot on 10 to within eight feet of the pin. McIlroy recovers somewhat with his third, but the backspin takes the ball a long way back down the green and leaves him with a difficult par effort.
    4/9/2016 9:17:59 PM
  • Langer & Day

Langer can't convert a fast birdie putt at 16 and his run of birdies ends at three, though he taps in for par.
    4/9/2016 9:19:26 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

McIlroy drops yet another shot at 10 as he can't convert the putt for par, dropping to even par for the tournament and five shots behind his playing partner. That gap remains at five after Spieth somehow misses his birdie effort, but he takes the par to move on to 11 with his lead well intact.

    Day & Langer

While Langer is ready to move on, Day misses his par effort and that leaves him alongside McIlroy on level par.
    4/9/2016 9:22:24 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

When it's not your day, it's not your day. While Spieth finds the lush fairway at 11, McIlroy is in the pine grass once again and has a tree trunk for close company that may just hamper his second shot.
    4/9/2016 9:26:24 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

Oh Rory, Rory, Rory. The Northern Irishman hits out onto the fairway with his pathway to the green obscured by a tree, but the ball begins to runs down left and there's a lot of water down keeps rolling and finds its way all the way onto the pond, and he'll be forced to take a drop in the drop zone, before chipping to the fringe of the green.
    4/9/2016 9:35:26 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

Somewhat under the radar, Spieth manages to miss his par shot and drops a shot back to -4 to give the chasing pack a glimmer of hope. However, it gets even worse for McIlroy as he misses his putt for bogey by some way, and records a double bogey to drop to +2 for the tournament and an alarming +5 for the day.

Spieth misses his bogey putt! Somehow he runs the ball at least three feet beyond the hole and he looks furious. He holes out but it's double bogeys all round, and suddenly his lead is down to one shot.
    4/9/2016 9:43:11 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

That double bogey from Spieth may just spur Rory on, as he fires his tee shot at the 12th to within a few feet of the pin, giving him a birdie effort to get a shot back straight away.

    Langer & Day

Two big errors from Langer on 18. The first sees him put too much fade on off the tee to fine the trees, and his third sees him chip over the green and almost rule out any chance of finishing with a par.
    4/9/2016 9:48:05 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

And just like that, Spieth birdies the 12th to take away any thoughts of a back-nine collapse and move to -4. McIlroy weighs up his close-range effort, but he misses it and will have to settle with par.
    4/9/2016 9:51:04 PM
  • Matsuyama & Aphibarnrat

Brilliant from Hideki Matsuyama! After seeing his ball stick on the green at 14 instead of rolling back down the slope and towards the pin, he runs a beautifully stuck putt straight into the hole for birdie to move to -3.

    Langer & Day

Day ends with a par on 18 to finish the day level on par and ensure he should be in the mix come Sunday night.
    4/9/2016 9:53:32 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

McIlroy is in trouble again on 13 as he fires his tee shot right and into the trees, and this feels a lot like another masters collapse in front of us.

    Langer & Day

Langer does well to record a bogey on 18 and finish the day on -2 to mean he will start tomorrow's round on -1.
    4/9/2016 9:55:06 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

Spieth lays up on 13 to take aim at the green, with McIlroy struggling again just to make par.

    Matsuyama & Aphibarnrat

Matsuyama meanwhile drills a wood shot on 15 over the water hazard and onto the green, giving him a chance at an eagle and a good chance of birdie to draw level with Spieth.
    4/9/2016 10:03:15 PM
  • Matsuyama & Aphibarnrat

Matsuyama can't curl his eagle effort enough from left to right, but he has a good chance at birdie here to move level with Spieth.

    Spieth & McIlroy

McIlroy has to hit out of the trees, and he finds the green with his fourth shot to leave him with an enormous putt just to save par. Spieth is disappointed not to give himself an easy birdie putt with his approach, but he doesn't have too many worries when it comes to McIlroy at the minute.
    4/9/2016 10:07:52 PM
  • Matsuyama & Aphibarnrat

Well, well, well. Matsuyama three-putts and his birdie goes begging, meaning Spieth retains his lead.

    Spieth & McIlroy

McIlroy's putt is, in fact, for a birdie, so I must have added a shot on there that he hadn't taken. He rolls his effort to within two feet of the pin and can yet save par. Spieth meanwhile can't sink his birdie putt, and his par effort is good to see him move on to the 14th without drama. McIlroy saves par.
    4/9/2016 10:12:15 PM
  • Justin Rose carded a one-over-par 73 to end the day on +3

    4/9/2016 10:18:29 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

More magic from Spieth at 14 as he rolls in a delicate birdie putt to return to -5, giving himself a three-shot buffer.

    Matsuyama & Aphibarnrat

Why is it three shots? Well that's because Matsuyama found trouble on 16 and carded a bogey to return to -2 alongside Smylie Kaufman, who is quietly going about his business.
    4/9/2016 10:27:01 PM
  • Matsuyama & Aphibarnrat

It's another shot gone for Matsuyama at 17 as begins to struggle with his putts, but he takes some of that frustration out as he rockets his drive down the fairway at 18.

    Kaufman & Merritt

It looks like it will be 24-year-old Smylie Kaufman playing alongside Spieth tomorrow as he cards an impressive 69 three-under-par for the day - the best score of day three - to finish on -2.
    4/9/2016 10:40:53 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

More toil for McIlroy at 15 as he misses a birdie putt by some way, Spieth makes matters worse by calmly sinking a 10-foot putt for birdie, and he moves ahead to -6 to hold a four shot lead. McIlroy saves par, but his back-nine card makes bad reading.
    4/9/2016 10:43:26 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

Both make par at the tricky par-three 16th, though neither made a good shot off the tee and can count themselves somewhat lucky to do so.

    Matsuyama & Aphibarnrat

Matsuyama's difficult end is completed with a par at 18, but it does mean he will be in the penultimate group tomorrow alongside Bernhard Langer, and remains well in contention.
    4/9/2016 10:59:07 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

Spieth finds trouble off the tee and is among the trees on the right of the fairway. He has a line out to safety, and putts up the hill with his third effort, but it's a tame shot and leaves him with a lot of work to do to save par. McIlroy finds the middle of the fairway for the first time since the ninth hole, but his second isn't great and leaves him with a 20-footer for birdie.
    4/9/2016 11:04:57 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

Spieth does indeed drop a shot as his par shot stops short, while McIlroy can't make the birdie. Disappointment all round on 17.
    4/9/2016 11:08:14 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

Spieth's in trouble once again here, as his drive on 18 is so far wide right that he will have to hit his second shot up the 10th before hitting back to the 18th green, or hit backwards down the fairway. McIlroy meanwhile is in prime position on the 18th fairway.
    4/9/2016 11:14:38 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

The leader manages to carve a delicate path out onto the 18th fairway, leaving himself 110 yards short of the green with his third shot. McIlroy finds a bit of form to strike his second onto the green and within a few feet of the pin, and the final two make their way to the final green.
    4/9/2016 11:17:40 PM
  • Spieth & McIlroy

Disaster for Spieth as he misses his bogey effort, and he ends the round with just a one shot lead, on -3. McIlroy can only par the 18th on a disappointing day that saw the Northern Irishman card a five-over 77.
    4/9/2016 11:27:03 PM
