  • If its was classed as dangerous play according to Roy Keane.. when they're keep hit Vidic across the face and never even touched the ball should he of not got a red card ? exactly use your brain that ref should have his license revoked and banned for European football period !

  • Over 1,500 votes in our poll so far - with three quarters of you saying the referee got it wrong.
    3/5/2013 10:39:39 PM
  • The decision is unfortunately right according to uefa's red card rules. In the rules intent is not taken into account. If the challenges is brutal or very dangerous then it is a direct red card. Clearly nani went for the ball but it was very dangerous and could have caused serious injury. This is similar to the South Africa final karate kick. It is a big decision but the right decision. I find it wrong when some fans claim its totally fine and that it isnt even a yellow card. Intention according to uefa doesnt matter. It is a dangerous action. Also many other things were missed out such as rafaels save with his hand and the offside position of van persie leading to ramos' own goal
    3/5/2013 10:45:09 PM
  • Wrong, wrong, wrong. Go back to school ref. Completely ruined a long awaited game of football
    3/5/2013 10:45:21 PM
  • When nani has his eyes on the ball and not on the player, the referee has no right to book him let alone send him off due to the fact that it was not intentional
    3/5/2013 10:45:25 PM
  • clear red card according to uefa rules im a semi pro referee and according to the rules it states what should have been done also , blaming the referee in this extent is unfair as the referring is not easy you dont have replys and i all happens in seconds
    3/5/2013 10:46:16 PM
  • Some strong feelings on the sending off debate. I should note a number of comments (although understandable) are not publishable.
    3/5/2013 10:48:23 PM
  • This is a game that the world was watching and if that was the best referee that UEfa had , then good luck to them . Absolute garbage this ref .
    3/5/2013 10:50:08 PM
  • In so many ways wrong. I can't believe it, nor did Jose Mourinho; even though he had to win to save his job, he still didn't like it. Also, what about Lopez's punch to Vidic's face? How is that not a foul?
    3/5/2013 10:50:22 PM
  • Taxi for Cuneyt!!!! #longdrivehome
    3/5/2013 10:50:55 PM
  • Please follow the link :
and check page 61. It is clear
    3/5/2013 10:51:03 PM
  • Absolutely wrong decision. Clear mistake. Cakir should be punished by the UEFA
    3/5/2013 10:53:12 PM
  • Head level kicks regarded dangerous?! What about all those overhead kicks then? They could chop off the defender's head instantly couldn't it according to your standards? Zlatan's volleys? If you don't know the rules, don't go on about it, trying to sound know-it-all. Pretending to be a minority does not make you sound any more professional or sophisticated. Wrong decision, end of. No serious foul play, no violent conduct. No nothing.

  • i AM ASTOUNDED THAT SO MANY PEOPLE /COMMENTATORS ETC CANNOT SEE WHAT WAS OBVIOUSLY A BAD TACKLE - STUDS UP - WRECKLESS AND ONE THAT HAD THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE INJURY....IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT NANI "NEARLY" GOT THE BALL. HE NOT ONLY COMMITTED THE FOUL BUT ALSO THEN ROLLED ABOUT AS IF 'HE' was the one who got kicked in the chest!! According to FIFA regulations it was a definite red card - and also according to ROY KEANE - one of uniteds most physical players who got plenty of red cards himself ......according to him there was no question that it was a red card offence. Perhaps the shock is due to the fact that United very rarely get these decisions against them - they quite often benefit from bad decisions. I have even heard comments about whether a Turkish referee should have been refereeing a European game!!!!!!!!!!!that's just racism -

  • As a young player, you're taught to keep your eye on the ball and bring your foot down WITH the ball... Any true footballer knows that was unintentional and a routine trap of the ball. It just so happened a guy was standing there. Very unfortunate.
    3/5/2013 10:54:12 PM
  • I think what would distinguish this from a yellow to red is the intent. Nani always had eyes for the ball, he was going to control the ball like he had too. A freekick and maybe a yellow card, nothing more. Saw a very interesting point on another debate, if high feet like that are constituted as dangerous play and a red card, does that mean overhead kicks are no longer allowed?
    3/5/2013 10:54:48 PM
  • Read the rules... Cuneyt Cakir is absolutely right. Take a look :
    3/5/2013 10:55:00 PM
  • Nano kicked out in mid air, he may not have intended to kick anyone but his secondary action was wrong and thuggish. It was the right call, the reds hate to lose and tend to react badly when they do, Rio Ferdinand has the nerve to have RESPECT on his sleeve, shame shame shame.
    3/5/2013 10:55:07 PM
  • Today we have seen a stain on European football! We pay good money to watch the best teams in Europe only for the referee to grab the headlines again!! Absolute shocker!
    3/5/2013 10:56:52 PM
  • Roy Keane has lost the plot. No way was that was a red card, Nani had his eye on the ball. Might aswell class overhead kicks as dangerous while your at it!!!
    3/5/2013 10:56:59 PM
  • After the incident that i was truly focused on the move of referee, he was not 100% focusing on the game as i saw him looking around the turf and not pay full attention on the field with players and ball. So what the grade he did have on his role? Big game should have big named ref...
    3/5/2013 10:57:13 PM
  • According to the rules, it was not a sending off, so people who put up links to all these rules are just embarrassing themselves. Stop it, please.
    3/5/2013 10:57:18 PM
  • Ref. def right. It doesn`t matter you see the opponent or not. It was really dangerous kick and opponent could get serious injury. Stop being fan of the team just be objective.
    3/5/2013 10:58:18 PM
  • Well, one of the most highly anticipated games became one of the most disappointing. Fans for both clubs would have to agree that it didn't allow us to see who was truly the better club. Hopefully this is the last major game that Cuneyt Cakir will referee at this level. He should be ashamed of himself!
    3/5/2013 10:58:25 PM
  • im a semi pro ref and i know the rules and it was the correct decision i back it and the ref
    3/5/2013 10:58:38 PM
  • Stop crying. Instead of criticizing the referee criticize the rules of UEFA. Should the referee not care about what is instructed to them as rules of the game. Studs all the way up , touch the opponent and you get red. He have just obeyed the rules. It is ignorance to criticize the referee. A team like Man U shouldn't act like looser. They should hire someone to teach the players the risks of getting red
    3/5/2013 10:59:05 PM
  • What was nani supposed to do, let the player get the ball unchallenged, the ref clearly has no knowledge of the game from a players pov.
Not only has the decision ruined the game but may have ruined the whole competition. ludicrous
    3/5/2013 10:59:11 PM
  • @MujtabaGhauri I think you need to read the rules!! High kick stud ups could have caused serious injury according to EUFA RED CARD!!
    3/5/2013 10:59:24 PM
  • Everyone including Mourinho and the Real players will tell you that was not a Red card. This Ref had full view of the play leading up to the incident and saw that Nani was playing the ball trying to take it down not go hard into a challenge and injury a player (he had no idea that Arbeola was there, he was trying to get to the ball quickly and get under control). Check the game and you will see Mourinho whisper to Fergie it was a bad call. Brutal call by Cüneyt Çakır, a total misrepresentation of the rule.
    3/5/2013 11:06:50 PM
  • the referee shouldn't be attacked for applying UEFA rules. How unfair it is. Are we plying by the rules or not? If you don't like the rule criticize the rule to the bone but not the referee
    3/5/2013 11:07:01 PM
  • You bash in a defender's head with your boots trying to volley a ball into the net. Blood in the defender's forehead. You don't see ANY strikers get sent off for that. NOT A RIGHT DECISION, EVEN ACCORDING TO THE RULES. END OF!
    3/5/2013 11:07:13 PM
  • How many times have teams that go down to 10 men actually gone on to win the game, Man Utd were just not good enough, Mr Cakir only sent one player off not four, if one of my mates went in like Nani did during our 5a side game they would be getting more than a red card, #respecttheref
    3/5/2013 11:07:38 PM
  • The ref just applied the rules. If you are looking for someone to blame then either blame the uefa rules or the trainers which did not teach the 'high foot rule' where if you bring your foot up higher than your waist level (in most cases) with the studs making contact to another player than it is a direct red card. Have any of you guys not seen a yellow card given for tackling with stud up. Although this was not a tackle it was a very high foot up.
    3/5/2013 11:08:21 PM
  • Adapting from Duffy Duck: 'If we never see this referee again, it will be too soon! Wooo! Ho!'
    3/5/2013 11:09:11 PM
  • Clear red. Anybody can read the rules and come to that decision. The real shock is that it came against United. The premier leaguers are not used to it.
    3/5/2013 11:09:21 PM
  • The ref made a bad decition, even morinho and players are not happy. So the ref will be ponished
    3/5/2013 11:10:01 PM
  • Ferguson should stop chewing gum and teach the players the rules unless he doesn't need a lesson about them in the first place
    3/5/2013 11:10:05 PM
  • According to the rulkes the ref got it right - and despite what the majority of people are saying he didn't produce the card instantly which suggests he did consult with the other officials before making his decision. HIGH KICK- STUDS UP - POTETIALLY INJUROUS TO THE OTHER PLAYER. Some comments infer that Nani should not have been punished because in thier opinion he wasn't looking at the other player and therefore didn't know he was there!!! I've seen plenty of fouls where the proponent is not looking at the player they fouled - elbows etc etc. Nani does appear to kick out 'after' contact and then rolled about on the floor cluching 'his' chest as if he was the one to take the kick!!! I personally think he knew exactly what he was doing
    3/5/2013 11:11:09 PM
  • Stop attacking the ref. It's reckless tackles like nani's that make the game dangerous. Players needs to respect the safety of other players and obey the rules. If you don't your out! Good call ref!
    3/5/2013 11:11:52 PM
  • Diago Lopez went to punch the ball away at a corner, missed the ball and punched Vidic in the side of the head. It was unintentional but clearly as dangerous as Nani's challenge. One could argue that head injuries are more dangerous yet every week you see goalkeepers taking out oncoming opponents in aerial challenges. I'm not saying Lopez should have been sent off. I'm saying there is inconsistency. Nani should have stayed on.
    3/5/2013 11:12:07 PM
  • Nonsense, up until the 56 minute Manchester United clearly out chanced and outplayed Real. Regardless of the decision being correct or incorrect it killed the game. 11 vs 10 with the calibre of players on either team is an almost impossible task.
    3/5/2013 11:12:39 PM
  • No one see the red card was coming, not even the madrid players. All in all, excellent tactics frm fergie and he definitely got his tactics spot on.
    3/5/2013 11:12:59 PM
  • Bad decision, hopefuly he will remember next time there are similar circumstances. When both teams are upset over a call it is clear that the decision was misjudged.
    3/5/2013 11:13:05 PM
  • Although the referee does not have the chance for replay, he should at least discussed with the other judges if the event was not so clear. His mistake makes Man U to end up with blaming him. Real Madrid would not so happy for their winning by the mistake of the referee. Mourinho left the match before the match ends. It seems to me that he does not want to cheer for such cheap success by the mistake of the referee.
    3/5/2013 11:13:46 PM
  • sincere congratulations to the referee. Didn't care about the atmosphere and went with the rule without hesitation. Boom Boom! Strong character
