Switzerland vs England - Euro 2016 qualifier LIVE!

by James Orr

Welcome to The Independent's live coverage of this opening Euro 2016 qualifier between Switzerland and England at St Jakob-Park in Basel.
    • Danny Welbeck gives England the lead after a brilliant counter-attack
    • Welbeck scores right at the death to secure three points
    9/8/2014 7:12:06 PM
  • The team news is already out and Roy Hodgson has sprung a surprise - Fabian Delph will make his first full start in Basel, in place of Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

    9/8/2014 5:39:16 PM
  • This is a massive game for England, Switzerland are the highest-ranked team in the group.

The Swiss, are ranked ninth in the World after they managed to make the last-16 at the World Cup, way above England who are languishing in 20th following their disastrous campaign in Brazil.
    9/8/2014 6:09:22 PM
  • The home side marks the first match in charge for new boss Vladimir Petkovic, who takes over from the experienced and respected Ottmar Hitzfeld.

Petkovic had a very good record at Lazio, winning 48 per cent of his 79 matches, but was forced out of the club in January after it emerged he would take over as Switzerland boss.

  • The two sides last met in qualifying for Euro 2012.

England won 3-1 in Switzerland in September 2010, but only two players (Joe Hart and Wayne Rooney) remain from that game. In the return fixture at Wembley in June 2011 the two sides drew 2-2 with Joe Hart the only player in tonight's XI to play in that match.

Switzerland on the other hand have six players remaining from that team.
    9/8/2014 6:17:03 PM
  • Roy Hodgson has just confirmed that confirmed that England will be playing in a 4-4-2 diamond, with Raheem Sterling at the point of the midfield four.

A big night in store for the Liverpool youngster.

    9/8/2014 6:32:10 PM
  • Says Roy Hodgson: "We are playing a system which is more similar to the game finished against Norway. In that system, Fabian [Delph] is adept on the left hand side like he plays with his club. Him and Jordan Henderson give us energy in wing half systems.

"Sterling will lead the attack point while Wilshere will hold the at the bottom. We want him and Raheem on the ball as much as possible.

"They're confident, their players have been together a while and come off a World Cup where they received praise as opposed to us."

    9/8/2014 6:40:16 PM
  • God Save The Queen rings out around St Jakob-Park, not long until we're started in Switzerland.
    9/8/2014 6:42:36 PM
  • KICK-OFF! We're underway.
    9/8/2014 6:46:26 PM
  • Measured start by England in the opening couple of minutes. Both teams not too keen to really push forward at the moment.

Fabian Delph has shown a nice couple of touches in the opening minutes, while the diamond is very wide so far.
    9/8/2014 6:50:53 PM
  • Better from England with Danny Welbeck springing a quick counter-attack down the left - however Jack Wilshere is caught in possession and Switzerland recover.

Fabian Delph then dives in on Lichtsteiner and earns his first international booking less than nine minutes into his first start.
    9/8/2014 6:55:34 PM
  • Shaqiri swings over a free-kick and it's easily held by Hart. The England keeper then sends out a beautiful pass to set Raheem Sterling free, the Liverpool winger cuts back to WIlshere who then tries to find Rooney but the skipper can't control - he should've done better there.
    9/8/2014 6:56:57 PM
  • Some nice touches again by England as a ball into Rooney is nodded into the path of Sterling, but he snatches at it with his left foot and it rolls harmlessly wide.
    9/8/2014 6:58:38 PM
  • Von Bergen makes a poor clearance straight into the path of Raheem Sterling who motors forward with Rooney peeling off to the left.

Sterling's pass is poor, however, bobbling and getting into Rooney a bit too slowly - the striker shoots but it's straight into the hands of Sommer.
    9/8/2014 7:01:55 PM
  • Nervy moment at the back for the Three Lions as Seferovic gets the wrong side of Phil Jones and is brought down clumsily by the centre-back as the pair come together.

The ref doesn't give anything - lucky really as that might have been a red card had he decided it was intentional.
    9/8/2014 7:04:41 PM
  • Half way through the first-half and England will be reasonably happy with their performance so far. They've not been under much pressure at the back and have carved out a couple of decent chances.

Wayne Rooney couldn't find the target with his header.
    9/8/2014 7:15:04 PM
  • England should score! As I was typing that last post, Danny Welbeck races away down the right, nicking the ball from Van Bergen, moving into the box the striker is in two minds about whether to pass to Rooney or Sterling - in the end he overhits a pass to Sterling who can't get on the end of it.

    The goal was gaping there.
    9/8/2014 7:16:12 PM

  • 9/8/2014 7:16:18 PM
  • Corner for Switzerland, cleared at the front post by Welbeck, falls to Lichtsteiner who unleashes a volley from outside the box but it's always heading over the top.
    9/8/2014 7:18:27 PM

  • Jack Wilshere in action at St Jakob-Park

    9/8/2014 7:18:58 PM
  • Joe Hart keeps the game at 0-0 with a good save with his right leg. Shaqiri cuts in from the right and finds Seferovic who loses Phil Jones in the inside right channel, the striker shapes to shoot with his left but can only find the outstretched leg of the England 'keeper.

Very good save and a sigh of relief from England fans.

    9/8/2014 7:19:35 PM
  • Switzerland are really starting to get on top now, England need to compose themselves. Seferovic is causing all sorts of problems for Cahill and Jones with his movement.
    9/8/2014 7:22:19 PM
  • Little bit better from England in the last couple of minutes, they've just regained a bit of composure and are popping the ball around well.

It ends with a Wayne Rooney shot, on the turn, from the edge of the area. It's not particularly well struck and Sommer makes a bit of a meal of it, to be honest.
    9/8/2014 7:29:00 PM
  • Much better from Sommer that time! The corner is whipped in and Phil Jones, unmarked, powers a header into the bottom corner.

The big keeper gets down wonderfully to keep that one out, top drawer.
    9/8/2014 7:29:15 PM
  • HALF-TIME: Switzerland 0 England 0

A decent performance from the young Lions, you get the feeling Roy Hodgson will be delighted with a draw when the 90 minutes is up.
    9/8/2014 7:32:08 PM

  • 9/8/2014 7:45:01 PM
  • KICK-OFF: Second half action is underway in Basel.
    9/8/2014 7:47:05 PM
  • Jack Wilshere goes really close, lovely one-two with Fabian Delph and his shot takes a slight nick and goes wide for a corner.
    9/8/2014 7:48:43 PM
  • England almost score again and probably should! After some good play the ball comes out wide and is crossed into Raheem Sterling - but the Liverpool man takes a wild swing at the low cross and completely miscues his shot.

The danger's not over there for the Swiss as the ball cannons off a defender and goes inches wide.

    9/8/2014 7:54:36 PM
  • Good England pressure but they have to take one of these chances soon.
    9/8/2014 7:54:52 PM

  • Yann Sommer makes an excellent diving save from Phil Jones' header

    9/8/2014 7:56:45 PM
  • England give away a free-kick and it comes to Xhaka at the far post but Rooney does well to block the shot.

Hart quickly finds Sterling but Behrami recovers well. Switzerland then go down the other end and Shaqiri's lofted pass is knocked back into the path of Seferovic whose well-hit volley is palmed away by Hart.

Good save as the tempo really starts to pick up.
    9/8/2014 7:58:39 PM
  • GOAL! Switzerland 0 England 1

Lovely goal from England! On the counter attack it's three against two with Wayne Rooney driving forward - the England skipper finds Raheem Sterling on the left and he makes no mistake, sending over a superb low cross for Danny Welbeck to apply the finish.

    9/8/2014 7:59:50 PM
  • Nervy from England as Jack Wilshere is caught in possession setting the home side off on the counter.

Drmic drives forward but never looks up, crossing into an empty penalty area, with Phil Jones able to hook away.
    9/8/2014 8:08:54 PM
  • Gary Cahill keeps England in the lead with a fantastic block! Josip Drmic is offside but the assistant referee keeps his flag down, setting the striker on his way.

He takes it round Hart and shoots but Cahill dives to the rescue to turn it round for a corner.

There are shouts for a penalty but it was in no way intentional.
    9/8/2014 8:11:40 PM
  • Jack Wilshere's night is over, he's replaced by James Milner.

It looks like Roy Hodgson will persist with the diamond, with Milner directly replacing the Arsenal man in that role.
    9/8/2014 8:15:17 PM

  • Danny Welbeck applies the finish to make it 1-0 to England

    9/8/2014 8:17:02 PM
  • Switzerland hit the crossbar with a brilliant volley... but Seferovic is ruled offside.

    Brilliant effort, though.
    9/8/2014 8:17:41 PM
  • Last 15 minutes in Basel, if England can hold on this will be a massive result in this qualification campaign.
    9/8/2014 8:18:08 PM
  • Phil Jones has pulled up with a what looks like a hamstring injury, he's limping quite heavily. Phil Jagielka comes on to replace the centre-back - that'll be a concern for Louis van Gaal
    9/8/2014 8:19:19 PM
  • England under more pressure and make a couple of decent clearances. They don't look nervy just yet but with 10 minutes left one would expect the Swiss to really push for a goal.
    9/8/2014 8:21:40 PM
  • England almost have a penalty as Johan Djorou steams towards Fabian Delph.

The Villa man shapes to shoot but cuts inside, luckily for Djorou his trailing leg gets just enough of the ball to keep him in the clear.
    9/8/2014 8:23:55 PM
  • Gokhan Inler goes close with a left-footed effort from outside the box, Delph a bit slow to close him down.

The captain's shot is dipping but doesn't drop enough, finding the roof of the net with Joe Hart sprawling.

    Five minutes left now.
    9/8/2014 8:27:01 PM
  • Switzerland are really pushing but England are so far up to what the home side are throwing at them. Joe Hart then does well to relieve some pressure by coming out to claim a high ball.

Roy Hodgson now tries to take some time off the clock with Rickie Lambert replacing Wayne Rooney - Gary Cahill takes the armband
    9/8/2014 8:31:25 PM
  • Five minutes left in Basel - England are not out of the woods yet.
    9/8/2014 8:32:47 PM
  • Sterling drives at the defence after a nice flick by Lambert - he comes inside and takes a shot on with his left that sails over. Well played, though.
    9/8/2014 8:33:40 PM
  • Sloppy play in midfield allows Gokhan Inler to steal the ball in midfield, away down the left a cross is cut out for a corner from Jagielka.

Slight nervy moment after the ball is cleared as a shot is deflected off Cahill - that could have ended up anywhere but thankfully falls kindly for Hart.
    9/8/2014 8:35:29 PM
  • GOAL! Switzerland 0 England 2

Classic counter-attack from England with Sterling onto Lambert, the striker then drives forward and finds Danny Welbeck to his left. The new Arsenal man supplies the composed finish to give Roy Hodgson a crucial three points.
    9/8/2014 8:35:50 PM

Game over in Basel and an impressive three points for the Three Lions. England were never really out of control in this match and always looked the more likely to win.

Defensively they were solid and although there were some sloppy moments, Roy Hodgson's diamond worked well for the most part.

Arsenal fans will be delighted with the performance of Danny Welbeck - not only did he score two goals but he was England's most dangerous player throughout.

Thanks very much for joining me. Good night.
