San Marino 0 England 8 - as it happened

England thrash San Marino on a good night for Wales and Ireland

So a great night for Wales, who came from behind to win 2-1 in Scotland.
It was all too straightforward for England who thrashed San Marino 8-0. It was also a good night for Ireland, who were able to hold Sweden to a 0-0 draw in Stockholm.

FT: A thorough thrashing dished out by England. The early own goal by Della Valle didn't help the home side and after Defoe made it 3-0 after 35 minutes, it was all over. But England weren't done. They scored five by half-time and added three more in the second half. Defoe might take the headlines due to his double but the Ox, who was the first England player to get on the scoresheet and Leighton Baines were perhaps the stand-out players for the away side.Simon Rice (Online Sports...Mar 22, 2013 at 9:50 PM

England are expected to put a few goals past San Marino tonight. A repeat of the match in 1993 would be good - although without the conceding after 8.3 seconds bit.

England beat San Marino 5-0 when they met last year - with Rooney scoring twice.

  • Over in Doha, Rio Ferdinand has been defending his decision to fly to Qatar to be a pundit for Al Jazeera Sport.

I met the boss in London and we spoke about my regime and (I'm doing) what I've done at the last few international breaks - the same.

I was pencilled in to have certain treatments, had them and then I've come away to have some rest time and to recuperate and get myself ready.

I think obviously the situation with myself and the national team is well documented.

But this isn't something that I'm doing differently. This is something I've done in past international get-togethers when I've not been involved.

I've had a course of treatment that I've had to have and then to go and rest and get ready and recuperate - and that's what I've continued to do.

I spoke to the club and the club doctors and the physios who have helped me organise the regime that I'm on. But ultimately it was spelled out for us anyway,
