  • So, big, no longer breaking news:

Bonnie Prince Georgie has seven godparents. In a break with tradition, they haven’t all been roped in from the leading Royal Families of Europe, and are in fact people vaguely known to the happy, modern, couple:

Oliver Baker, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, Earl Grosvenor, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Julia Samuel, William van Cutsem and Zara Tindall.

They are all, we are informed, "commoners." The double-barrelled count is a relatively modest 28.4 per cent. And only one is an Earl.

  • On guest list - a meagre 50 people will be at the Chapel Royal at St James's this afternoon for the 45 minute shindig this afternoon.

  • Of course tradition dictates that Royal Christenings occur in the Music Room at Buckingham Palace (see below), so wee Georgie is nothing if not radical.

And in fact, according to a report published at the weekend by the University of Hawaii, London will be uninhabitable by 2047, so Buck Pal’s old Music Room may have anointed its last future monarch.
    What a shame.

  • #RepublicanChristening fact. The water that the Archbish of Canters will splash about at today's service has been brought in from the River Jordan, scene of arguably the most big deal christening of all, Christ's.

Actually, was Christ christened? I mean baptised. Otherwise his mate would have been called John the Christener. And Christ probably can’t be christened, can he? It would look kind of big headed, and it just sounds wrong.

What is the difference between christening and baptism? Tweet #republicanchristening

  • Loathe as I am to link to a rival liveblog, the Huffington Post does have a first rate christening cam, showing the current comings and goings outside the gates to St James's Palace where the Royal Party may or may not go in. At 12.28, a middle-aged woman in a green coat went past, but you've missed it I'm afraid.

  • Still reeling from the Fergie revelations, further misery abounds for the Beckhams, who are not expected to attend.

    10/23/2013 11:32:59 AM
  • PM @David_Cameron on his feet for #PMQs . He pays tribute to Prince George, ahead of his christening later.
  • The BBC weighs in with 10 Ways Christening Has Changed. Number 1 - there's fewer of them.

Indeed, you might say foisting such a now widely discredited belief system on a little baby before he’s had time to make up his mind for himself might be a breach of his human rights. But free will’s not really going to be big on the life plan of the star of today's show, is it.
    10/23/2013 11:40:21 AM
  • Over on christencam the two guards at the gate have gone on a bit of a marchabout.
    10/23/2013 11:46:03 AM
  • A further thought on Jesus's christening/baptism. Who were Jesus's godparents? Imagine it's a complicated matter when God himself is already your actual parent. Send Jesus godparent suggestions to #republicanchristening

  • @tompeck If you say 'Christening' with a hard 't' it sounds like a straight-to-DVD horror movie.
  • @RossMc11: I don't get this, but I'm sure you're right.

  • @tompeck Are they showing the Christening on BT Sport? Get @DavidGinolaCeze and @honigstein in for half time analysis #republicanchristening
  • 13.33 The #RepublicanChristening Liveblog has an error, at 11.35. Though Zara Tindall nee Phillips has been doing a carefully studied impression of a commoner for more than a decade, she remains very much a Royal, and as such, not all of Bonnie Prince Georgie's godparents are commoners.
    10/23/2013 12:37:03 PM
  • The Middletons have arrived for the Christening, along with about 700 yards of "value christening bunting" from their party site. Awkward.

  • Whatever the collective noun for freaks, this lot have been outside St James's Palace since early this morning, to not get a glimpse at a three month old baby. See poll.

  • Some questions coming in on the christening gown. It transpires the nuff bunced up royals are in fact loveably tight-fisted with our money when it comes to babythreads.

The last time a new christening gown was run up was for Queen Victoria's eldest daughter Victoria, in 1841, and they've all worn the same one ever since.

Unfortunately, it is now knackered, so Georgie Boy will wear a replica, made in 2008.

13.50 Though it seems an eternity to have to wait, tomorrow we'll be getting a picture just like this one - ie three future Kings with the current queen. The little chap pictured here is the abdictating kerfuffle-causer-in-chief Edward VIII. He looks so innocent, but don't forget that without him, there would have been no W/E The Movie, Madonna's nothing less than atrocious directorial debut.

13.54 Yes, the last time a future King was born while his great grandma was still chief throne warmer, this is what happened.

14.18 This is Peter Kerridge, CEO of Premier Christian Radio. He is hand delivering a christening card, signed by 5,000 listeners, wishing little George "Blessings on your Christening Day", and in so doing gently ratcheting up the pressure on the three month old George not to think for himself and just to subscribe to a nonsensical belief system that the most of the rest of the country has already abandoned. But he is smiling, despite the rain.
