  • Manchester United manager David Moyes expects the Red Devils to retain their tradition of being at their best when the doubters are out in force.

We are getting written off quite often.
In the main, when that is the case, this club tends to say 'we'll show you'.
It is in my nature. It was definitely in the previous manager's nature. And the supporters here understand that as well.

  • Manchester United have today been linked with a late move for Gareth Bale. Well it wouldn't certainly soften the blow if Rooney were to leave. For the full story, CLICK HERE.

  • Aside from the whole Rooney saga - this is seen as early indicator as to how the rivalry between Moyes and Mourinho will play out. According to Pat Nevin, the United manager is Jose's tactical match...

Everton always gave Chelsea tough games. Davie had to react to Jose tactically and he was among the very best at it. Obviously he didn’t win many games but he shouldn’t have done because player for player, pound for pound there was no way they were as good, having not had as much to spend.

  • Tactically, this is how the teams compare after their wins on the opening days of the season.

  • Back on Rooney - Mourinho hasn't shirked the opportunity to stir things up. It was put to him that, come this evening, he will be the villain of the piece at Old Trafford and the target for a home crowd who feel that he is taking liberties with their club by pursuing Rooney in such a public fashion. Needless to say, that is not how Mourinho sees it.

Why? They are against me? But I didn’t say [to Rooney], ‘You will be a second choice for me’. And they are against me? We are trying to get a player that a manager told, ‘You will be a second option for me’. We are not going for Robin van Persie. They don’t have to be against me. If I say Ramires is a second option for me and he plays when Frank Lampard is tired or injured, if someone comes here to buy Ramires, nobody is upset.

  • Still no word on whether Wayne Rooney will play a part in tonight's match. Sky Sports showed him getting off the team bus at Old Trafford - but then we always expected he'd at least be at Old Trafford so that tells us little.

  • BREAKING: Rooney starts for Manchester United.
    8/26/2013 6:05:52 PM
  • Rooney plays in an attacking looking United side that also includes Danny Welbeck and Robin van Persie. Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville says he's "not at all surprised" that the England striker is lining up against his potential new club.
    8/26/2013 6:07:18 PM
  • The teams...

Manchester United: De Gea, Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Cleverley, Carrick, Welbeck, Rooney, van Persie.

Subs: Anderson, Giggs, Smalling, Lindegaard, Young, Kagawa, Buttner.

Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Lampard, De Bruyne, Oscar, Hazard, Schurrle.

Subs: Essien, Torres, Mikel, Lukaku, Schwarzer, Azpilicueta, Mata.

    8/26/2013 6:20:12 PM
  • Wonder how sales of Rooney shirts have been going? The announcement of his name in the starting XI was greeted with a huge cheer apparently. Although that might have come from the Chelsea section.

    8/26/2013 6:24:14 PM
  • Mourinho refuses to divulge too much about his thinking on selecting no recognised striker - saying he’s worried Moyes is listening to his interview in the dressing room. What he does says is…

I go for mobility. I’m not afraid to make decisions.

He does seem quite happy to talk about all of Rooney’s attributes though. Perhaps he’s hoping Wayne is watching.

    8/26/2013 6:39:09 PM
  • Earlier we asked where you think Rooney's future lies. There's a clear winner. 46 per cent of you think he'll remain at United and go on to become the all-time top scorer at Old Trafford.

    8/26/2013 6:51:44 PM
  • Teams are on their way out - Rooney remembered to put on the red shirt rather than blue.
    8/26/2013 6:57:13 PM
  • 1 min: We're off...

    8/26/2013 7:01:40 PM
  • Mourinho may have already made one mistake tonight according to The Independent's Sam Wallace...

    8/26/2013 7:03:38 PM
  • 3 min: United give the ball away when in a decent position but Welbeck does brilliantly to track Oscar all the way down the other end of the pitch before nicking it off him.

    8/26/2013 7:04:55 PM
  • 4 min: Chants of 'Rooney, Rooney, Rooney' go around Old Trafford. He hasn't even done anything yet!

    8/26/2013 7:05:37 PM
  • 5 min: Now he has done something. He's clattered in to John Terry. That's worthy of chants of 'Rooney, Rooney, Rooney' from the neutrals.

    8/26/2013 7:07:33 PM
  • 9 min: Good link up play from Welbeck and Rooney with United making more in-roads than the visitors - although to be fair, Chelsea have had the best chance so far, with Oscar taking a snapshot from the edge of the box. Fortunately for De Gea it's right at him.

    8/26/2013 7:11:50 PM

  • 8/26/2013 7:12:56 PM
  • 12 min: Corner to United with RVP swinging in it. No one near it. Perhaps if van Persie was in the box rather than taking it there would have been.

    8/26/2013 7:14:31 PM
  • 15 min: Cynical hack on RVP by Ashley Cole. The England man gets away without a booking though.

    8/26/2013 7:16:48 PM
  • 16 min: It's then RVP who spreads the ball well out to Rooney on the right. He tries to swing it in but the final ball was a bit useless.
    8/26/2013 7:17:43 PM
  • It's easy to be nice before kick-off - let's see if they're so friendly at the final whistle.

    8/26/2013 7:18:24 PM
  • 21 min: Lovely turn by RVP who then tries a one-two with Rooney on the edge of the box but it breaks down. Not quite happening for either side at the moment.

    8/26/2013 7:23:02 PM
  • 23 min: It hits the net! Unfortunately for RVP it's the side of it rather than the back of it though. Fierce shot from the Dutchman from a tight angle.

    8/26/2013 7:25:13 PM
  • 24 min: Frenetic stuff. The ball pings around with United just about getting it under control, allowing Welbeck to put in a cross for RVP. It's just too high for him though and he can't direct it on target. Better.

    8/26/2013 7:26:56 PM
  • 8/26/2013 7:28:55 PM
  • 28 min: Even when he makes a mistake there are chants of 'Rooney, Rooney, Rooney'. The England striker tries something clever but his pass just goes out for a goal-kick. He then has a chance of a shot from the edge of the box. He gets it away but it's weak and Cech falls on top of it.

    8/26/2013 7:33:12 PM
  • 32 min: Yellow card for De Bruyne who brings down RVP. Before that it was Oscar who was in for some rough treatment, with both Valencia and Rooney bringing down the Brazilian.

    8/26/2013 7:36:32 PM
  • Just doesn't quite look right does it.

    8/26/2013 7:39:19 PM
  • 35 min: Vidic tries a header back to the keeper and De Bruyne was nearly in there. De Gea just makes it.

    8/26/2013 7:39:28 PM
  • 39 min: A few crosses come in from United before it falls for Cleverley on the edge of the box. The England man absolutely thumps it... into the stands. It wasn't far off though.

    8/26/2013 7:41:04 PM

  • 8/26/2013 7:41:39 PM
  • 42 min: Nicely worked by United again with Valencia pushing it out to makeshift right-back Jones. His cross is deflected though and Cech collects. Come on, let's have a goal before half-time. Or at least a shot on target.

    8/26/2013 7:44:53 PM
  • 44 min: There's that shot I wanted. And it comes from Chelsea. The ball comes at Oscar quickly on the edge of the box but he manages to get a low drive out of it. It's simple for De Gea though.

    8/26/2013 7:46:33 PM
  • 45 + 1 min: Ramires gets beyond Evra on the right hand side but that cross is a real shocker. Way over the goal. Wouldn't have mattered though, there was no-one in the box anyway. Not sure this Mourinho experiment of playing no recognised strikers is working.

    8/26/2013 7:48:30 PM
  • HT: The half-time whistle goes. I'll be frank - that was a let down. Very few chances, just a few shots from range but nothing that tested the keepers. The chants of 'Rooney, Rooney, Rooney' from both sets of fans has been the highlight so far. Which says a lot. Let's hope it improves in the second 45.

    8/26/2013 7:50:05 PM
  • There's that challenge on Oscar from Valencia. The United man was lucky to get away without a booking.

    8/26/2013 7:51:11 PM
  • HT: Second half underway very soon.

    8/26/2013 8:03:07 PM
  • 46 min: Gary Neville suggests bringing his brother Phil on. "That'd change the game" he says. We're underway anyway - no changes.
