Premier League LIVE: West Brom vs Chelsea, Everton vs Manchester City and Watford vs Southampton

  • Welcome to live coverage of the Premier League from The Independent as Jose Mourinho takes his win-less Chelsea side to West Brom before intriguing clashes between Everton and Manchester City & Watford and Southampton.

The champions have endured a torrid start to the new season, seeing Thibaut Courtois dismissed during the 2-2 draw with Swansea before suffering a 3-0 mauling away to Manuel Pellegrini's City slickers last weekend.

Mourinho won't need any reminding that his last 6 top flight defeats have come against managers whose names begin with 'P'. The bad news is that Tony Pulis and Alan Pardew, the Crystal Palace manager, lie in waiting.

The Baggies boss, though, is in similar need of a pick-me-up, sitting in the bottom three, but he will always fancy his chances of pulling off a scalp, especially after last season's 3-0 victory over Chelsea.

Go grab yourself a cuppa, strap in and settle down for another day of Premier League action. We'll still be here when you get back.

  • We were treated to another day of drama in the Premier League yesterday afternoon as Crystal Palace and Bournemouth enjoyed impressive wins to propel them up the table.

Bakary Sako was the hero for Alan Pardew's men as the Eagles saw off Aston Villa late on at Selhurst Park. The story of the day, however, came in East London as West Ham's collapse since an opening day win at the Emirates continues.

A stunning hat-trick from Callum Wilson handed Eddie Howe's their first ever Premier League victory, seeing off a poor Hammers side.

Riyad Mahrez continued his stunning early-season form to rescue a point for table-topping Leicester City after cancelling out Dele Alli's scruffy opener at the King Power Stadium.

It was more frustration for Manchester United as Steve McClaren's Newcastle were able to keep the score goalless at Old Trafford with Wayne Rooney continuing to struggle up front.

There were 1-1 draws at Carrow Road and the Stadium of Light as Norwich City, denied by a marvelous display from Jack Butland, and Sunderland continued in their efforts to remain in the division. Dick Advocaat will be relieved to see his crisis-talks bearing some fruit in the North East.

  • Already buoyed by the capture of Pedro from Barcelona in midweek, Chelsea head into today's meeting with West Brom with reports circling that they have agreed a fee with Juventus to sign Paul Pogba.

The Independent's Sam Wallace broke the news of the Blues' interest this week but now it has been suggested that Jose Mourinho has upped his efforts to sign the exciting Frenchman.

The Sun claim that a deal has been struck for the Juve man, one of the most coveted players in Europe, that would smash the British transfer fee record of £59.7m paid for Angel Di Maria.

  • Today sees one of the more peculiar footballing bromances resumed as Jose Mourinho meets up with Tony Pulis at the Hawthorns.

The Portuguese manager's love-in with Pulis remains undiminished despite the 3-0 loss towards the end of last season. Their mutual dislike of Arsene Wenger could also help their friendship run smoothly, of course.

“Whether you like him or dislike him for what he is, there’s no doubting he is a top manager,” Pulis once said.

“The time I had with him was charming – but they had just beaten us. It would be nice to see on Saturday if he’s charming.

  • TEAM NEWS: PEDRO STARTS FOR CHELSEA

Jose Mourinho has thrown new signing Pedro straight into his Chelsea side while also keeping the faith in captain John Terry. The Blues defender has been the subject of plenty of tabloid splashes this week after being subbed off at half-time during the 3-0 demolition at Manchester City on Sunday.

The Baggies, still without  a win, hand Salomon Rondon a starting berth as Darren Fletcher skippers the side. Rickie Lambert drops down to the bench while Saido Berahino is nowhere to be seen.

    West Brom
Myhill, Dawson, McAuley, Olsson, Brunt, McManaman, Morrison, Fletcher (c), Yacob, McClean, Rondon.

Subs: Rose, Chester, Lescott, Gardner, Gnabry, Anichebe, Lambert.

Chelsea: Courtois; Ivanovic, Zouma, Terry (c), Azpilicueta; Matic, Fabregas; Pedro, Willian, Hazard; Diego Costa.

Subs: Begovic, Cahill, Mikel, Loftus-Cheek, Traore, Remy, Falcao.

  • Pedro, the Spain international who starts today at the Hawthorns, took 'one minute' to decide to join Chelsea from Barcelona, says Jose Mourinho.

The Blues boss was in cheerier spirits talking to the media on Friday morning as he spoke about his newest signing. When quizzed by reporters about how much of an effort it took to persuade Pedro to join, the former Inter Milan boss was unequivocal.

“It was a one-minute conversation,” Mourinho said. “[I asked] ‘Is it true that you want to leave Barcelona?’ [Pedro:] ‘Yes, it’s true. I love it here. It’s my home, but it’s time for me to move.

[Mourinho:] ‘Did you sign already for another club?’ [Pedro] ‘Almost, but not yet.’ [Mourinho] ‘Do you want to come here?’ [Pedro] ‘Yes, I want.

  • As the atmosphere ramps up outside the Hawthorns in the West Midlands, the pitch is invaded by an unusual guest. But who will be goosed at full-time?

Both sides badly need a pick-me-up after indifferent starts to the new Premier League campaign. Chelsea seek a first win to kick-start their season while West Brom's survival tilt is yet to be jerked into gear. The Baggies are yet to score this term and are without Tottenham-bound Saido Berahino.

    Half-an-hour to go!

    8/23/2015 12:08:00 PM

  • Speaking to Sky Sports, Jose Mourinho has enthused about new signing Pedro before aiming a sly dig at the media.

Asked about handing the Spainard his debut, Mourinho said: "Let’s see. Let’s not demand everything in the first day, after just three days of training.

Everybody knows his qualities, it just
depends how long he adapts but there is no doubt he is a super player.

"You are always interested in players who are not playing. Maybe next week, instead of a teamsheet, I will give you a list of players who are not playing."

  • TEN MINUTES UNTIL KICK-OFF

    8/23/2015 12:23:22 PM

    West Brom
Myhill, Dawson, McAuley, Olsson, Brunt, McManaman, Morrison, Fletcher (c), Yacob, McClean, Rondon.

Subs: Rose, Chester, Lescott, Gardner, Gnabry, Anichebe, Lambert.

Chelsea: Courtois; Ivanovic, Zouma, Terry (c), Azpilicueta; Matic, Fabregas; Pedro, Willian, Hazard; Diego Costa.

    8/23/2015 12:29:16 PM
  • 0 mins: James Morrison and Darren Fletcher get proceedings under way for West Brom as the rain pours down in the West Midlands. After yesterday's 30 degree heat, the Hawthorns' floodlights are already on.
    8/23/2015 12:32:00 PM
  • 3 mins: Chelsea, all in black, have made the more assured start, zipping the ball around with confident, but West Brom won't mind to much so long as they continue to do little with it.
    8/23/2015 12:33:40 PM
  • 4 mins: The first scare for Chelsea falls to Solomon Rondon as the Venezuelan international tried to get on the end of James Morrison's hopeful cross. Thibaut Courtois was in the right place at the right time. John Terry will perhaps thought he could have been faster off the mark.

    8/23/2015 12:34:51 PM
  • 5 mins: Eden Hazard, who has endured a tough start to the season, finds Diego Costa before turning inside his man. The Spain international has the goal at his mercy but scuffs his shot wide.
    8/23/2015 12:36:08 PM

  • 8/23/2015 12:36:53 PM
  • 7 mins: Jose Mourinho looks aggrieved on the sidelines as West Brom settle into the match. Claudio Yacob starts in the heart of Tony Pulis' midfield after the former Stoke boss admitted West Brom needed more cover against Manchester City on the opening weekend.
    8/23/2015 12:39:07 PM
  • 10 mins: Pedro has not had an opportunity to shine for Chelsea yet  as the rain pours down. James Morrison then picks up the ball and arrows a cross towards Solomon Rondon. The £12m signing then volleys wide of the Chelsea goal.
    8/23/2015 12:42:37 PM
  • PENALTY TO WEST BROM!

Nemanja Matic hauls down Chris Brunt. Jose Mourinho shakes his head and looks furious. It would appear that James Morrison will take the kick. Are things about to get worse for the visitors?

    8/23/2015 12:42:51 PM
  • 12 mins: PENALTY SAVED!

Thibaut Courtois sticks out a leg and James Morrison's penalty, fired down the middle, is sent skywards! Excellent save from the returning goalkeeper and Chelsea survive.
    8/23/2015 12:44:36 PM
  • 15 mins: Chelsea breath an enormous sigh of relief but they continue to give away cheap set-plays. Nemanja Matic is in the book for a poor foul on Chris Brunt in the centre of the pitch.
    8/23/2015 12:47:51 PM
  • 17 mins: Chelsea are on the rocks. Cesar Azpilicueta gifts West Brom a free-kick in the left-hand corner. James Morrison then whips it into the box but Gareth McAuley's header flies over the Blues' crossbar. Alarming stuff for the Premier League champions.
    8/23/2015 12:49:33 PM
  • GOOAALL!! West Brom 0 Chelsea 1 (Pedro) - 21 mins.

That's more like it from Chelsea and it's the former Barca man of his debut! Eden Hazard plots his route through the Baggies' midfield before playing a beautifully weighted pass into the feat of Pedro who converts. Boaz Myhill had no chance as the ball deflected off Jonas Olsson on its way into the net.

    8/23/2015 12:50:03 PM
  • 24 mins: Chelsea have settled down after taking an undeserved lead in the Black Country. The visitors have enjoyed 65% possession but did very little with it until Pedro's opener. Tony Pulis is barking orders from his technical area, presumably fearing a collapse like the one he suffered against Manchester City a fortnight ago.
    8/23/2015 12:55:43 PM
  • 27 mins: 'Are you watching Manchester?' is the chant as Chelsea fans rub salt into the wounds after beating United to the £23m capture of Pedro. The goalscorer looks a real menace whenever he picks up the ball as West Brom look for a route back into the match.
    8/23/2015 12:58:32 PM

  • 8/23/2015 12:59:17 PM
  • GOOAALL!! West Brom 0 Chelsea 2 (Diego Costa) - 29 mins

Within the blink of an eye, Chelsea have taken control. Willian surges into the West Brom half, cutting the ball wide to Pedro. The Spaniard then slices an effort across goal before Diego Costa applies the finish. 'Boring, boring Chelsea' rings around the Hawthorns.
    8/23/2015 12:59:47 PM
  • 32 mins: West Brom are really struggling to do anything with the ball now as Chelsea shift into fifth gear. If the Baggies get mauled again today, in similar fashion to their submission against Manchester City a few weeks ago, serious questions will be asked about their Premier League credentials.
    8/23/2015 1:04:14 PM

  • 8/23/2015 1:05:06 PM
  • GOOAALL!! West Brom 1 (Morrison) Chelsea 2 - 34 mins.

You can't begrudge West Brom this as James Morrison drags them back into it! James McClean keeps the ball alive on the byline, crosses for Solomon Rondon who then drags it back across goal allowing Morrison to strike. Game on!

    8/23/2015 1:05:30 PM
  • 37 mins: It's now West Brom's time to turn the screw as Chelsea struggle to get themselves back into the ascendancy. Callum McManaman cuts inside Cesc Fabregas brilliantly before finding James McClean on the left wing but his cross doesn't pose too much of a threat.
    8/23/2015 1:09:36 PM
  • 39 mins: Jose Mourinho is furious on the sidelines as more Pedro brilliance goes to waste. The World Cup winner slips inside Craig Dawson and sets-up Willian but the Brazilian slides his shot wide. An awful miss which just invites more pressure from West Brom.
    8/23/2015 1:10:59 PM
  • GOOAALL!! West Brom 1 Chelsea 3 (Cesar Azpilicueta) - 41 mins.

Chelsea's two-goal advantage is restored after some wonderful play from Diego Costa, cushioning the ball down, gives Cesar Azpilicueta the chance to put the Blues 3-1 up. Grabbing his first Premier League goal in the process, the 25-year-old delights a cantankerous Jose Mourinho.
    8/23/2015 1:12:38 PM
  • TWO MINUTES ADDED TIME.
    8/23/2015 1:16:33 PM
  • HT: West Brom 1 Chelsea 3

A kaleidoscopic first-half is drawn to a close as Chelsea trudge down the tunnel with a 3-1 advantage to protect in the second period. Pedro marked his debut with a tidy opener before Diego Costa notched an effort beyond Boaz Myhill.

James Morrison then made amends for his missed penalty, saved by Thibaut Courtois early on, to pull one back. Cesar Azpilicueta, however, was on hand to resume normal order before the break.

  • 8/23/2015 1:21:04 PM
  • 45 mins: Willian and Eden Hazard get us under way and the rain finally relents at the Hawthorns. Can West Brom salvage anything from this clash? They'll need a goal quickly to put Chelsea on the back foot.
    8/23/2015 1:34:37 PM
  • 48 mins: Chelsea have made a more assured to the second half than the first. Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa have been impressive but Pedro is undoubtedly the star man. West Brom have barely had a touch as the Blues maintain possession and forced the Baggies back into their own half.
    8/23/2015 1:40:20 PM
  • JOHN TERRY SENT OFF!

Does it get any worse for John Terry? The former England captain is given his marching orders in dramatic fashion as he tugs Solomon Rondon to the floor. He was the last man and had to go.

Gary Cahil is coming on in place of Willian as Jose Mourinho treats to camera to a wry smile.
    8/23/2015 1:42:38 PM
  • GOOAALL!! West Brom 2 (James Morrison) Chelsea 3 - 59 mins.

It's all falling apart for Jose Mourinho at the Hawthorns as James Morrison nods a delightful header into the Chelsea net. Callum McManaman glided a wonderful cross straight onto the Baggies' man's head and the Blues are looking desperate!

  • Pictured: John Terry is sent packing

    8/23/2015 1:52:20 PM
  • 64 mins: West Brom are knocking on the door now as Tony Pulis searches for a hat-trick of wins over Jose Mourinho. Solomon Rondon has just gone close again, dragging his effort just wide, as the Baggies sniff a scalp.
    8/23/2015 1:56:23 PM
  • 68 mins: A sarcastic cheer greets the Chelsea medical team, minus Eva Carneiro. Jose Mourinho's season is quickly becoming a parody.
    8/23/2015 1:58:42 PM
  • 71 mins: Callum McManaman continues to be a thorn in Branislav Ivanovic's side. The Baggies winger cuts inside and glances his shot just wide. Chelsea hanging on.

    8/23/2015 2:02:09 PM
  • 75 mins: Ramadel Falcao is about to come on for Chelsea and not a moment too soon. While Diego Costa has been tremendous at times today, his latest miss - a blaze over the bar - suggests a change in tact is needed.
    8/23/2015 2:06:17 PM
  • 78 mins: Pedro combined with Radamel Falcao  in the West Brom penalty box but the Monaco loanee cannot apply the finish Chelsea so badly crave. This is end-to-end stuff and could end in tears for the visitors.
