  • The supporters are slowly filtering into the Etihad ahead of today's early kick-off but how will Manchester City fans greet the team news?

Is Manuel Pellegrini saving his brighter sparks for the date with Real Madrid this week? All is well that ends well, but the hosts must pick up a result today otherwise their top four spot could be in jeopardy. Manchester United, West Ham and Liverpool are waiting eagerly for slip-up...
    4/23/2016 11:17:12 AM

  • Wondering why Stoke City are without midfielder Ibrahim Afellay this afternoon? You're not alone. The Dutchman suffered what the club describe as a "serious" knee injury during training yesterday, ruling him out of the rest of the season.

Mark Hughes, the Potters manager, confirmed the 30-year-old twisted his knee in training on Friday and has refused put a timeframe on his absence. They'll have to do it without him today.
    4/23/2016 11:36:55 AM
  • 0 mins - Manchester City 0 Stoke City 0: We're off at the Etihad. Today represents the chance for the hosts to go above Arsenal into third-placer while Stoke have not yet given up hope of securing their highest-ever Premier League points tally. Eight points would do just that.
    4/23/2016 11:46:09 AM
  • 6 mins - Manchester City 0 Stoke City 0: It's been a decent, if unremarkable, start by the hosts as Kelechi Iheanacho goes close from outside the area with a neat curled effort. To Shay Given's relief, however, it glances just wide and Stoke survive an early scare.
    4/23/2016 11:56:32 AM

  • 14 mins - Manchester City 0 Stoke City 0: It's becoming somewhat scrappy at the Etihad with Stoke clearly trying to frustrate City in the opening exchanges. Mark Hughes's men need to be better in possession, mind you, after conceding an average of two goals per match since January.
    4/23/2016 11:58:45 AM
  • 21 mins - Manchester City 0 Stoke City 0: Other than a tame header by Nicolas Otamendi, it's been a subdued opening 20 minutes or so in the blue half of Manchester. There are plenty of pockets of space out there but nobody as yet seems willing to run into them. There's a long way to go yet, but the early signs aren't too promising if you wanted thrills and spills to start your Saturday afternoon.
    4/23/2016 12:06:56 PM

  • 28 mins - Manchester City 0 Stoke City 0: Peter Crouch (pictured) is enjoying the spectacle, at least. Sergio Aguero is proving to be a menace for Stoke but he is all too often finding himself forced back to the byline and the danger is lost. The Etihad crowd are just beginning to get a touch restless - an occurrence which only really helps Stoke of course.
    4/23/2016 12:12:44 PM
  • 29 mins - Manchester City 0 Stoke City 0: Danger for Joe Hart! Marko Arnautovic ghosts into the City penalty area and floats a cross towards Joselu. The former Real Madrid forward then arches his neck to get a header onto it but he just can't keep it down and it drifts over Hart's crossbar. The first real moment of menace from Stoke and not a moment too soon.
    4/23/2016 12:16:48 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Manchester City 1 Stoke City 0 - Fernando - 34 mins

A soft goal for the visitors to concede as Fernando, who had only scored once all season prior to today, creeps in front of Shay Given to apply a headed finish to Jesus Navas's corner.

Whenever City take the lead, they usually keep it... It couldn't have come at a better time for Manuel Pellegrini's side who clearly want a nice, easy, injury-free Saturday afternoon before facing the might of Real Madrid in three days.

    4/23/2016 12:19:49 PM

Kelechi Iheanacho is hauled to the ground by Ryan Shawcross and now City have a wonderful opportunity to double their advantage before the break. Sergio Aguero to take...
    4/23/2016 12:28:15 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Manchester City 2 Stoke City 0 - Sergio Aguero (pen) - 44 mins

Was there any doubt? Yes he may have missed one against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League but City's Mr Dependable, Sergio Aguero, steps up to give City a two-goal lead with seconds to spare in the first-half. It's almost over as far as Stoke are concerned.

    4/23/2016 12:30:11 PM
  • HT: Manchester City 2 Stoke City 0

Manuel Pellegrini's charges are in cruise control as Stoke City are brushed aside with little effort necessary at the Etihad. First Fernando duly obliged when offered the perfect opportunity to opening the scoring in the box, from a Jesus Navas corner, before Sergio Aguero added his 101st goal for City from the penalty spot. A big half required if Mark Hughes's men are to spark a comeback.
    4/23/2016 12:33:03 PM
  • Sergio Aguero steps up..

    ...picks his spot...

...and celebrates his 101st City strike.

  • BREAKING: Mamadou Sakho subject to doping investigation

Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho is being investigated by Uefa for an alleged anti-doping violation. More to follow on the Independent...
    4/23/2016 12:45:20 PM
  • 45 mins - Manchester City 2 Stoke City 0: Shay Given's groin has been causing the Irishman problems and so Jakob Haugaard, 17 years his junior, replaces him at the break. A ripple of warm applause greets Given's name as the announcer announces the change at the Etihad. Let's see if the second half feels any less like an testimonial than the first...
    4/23/2016 12:49:21 PM
  • 48 mins - Manchester City 2 Stoke City 0: What a chance for the visitors to make this match interesting again! Marko Arnautovic gallops down the left flank and plays a perfect pass into Joselu but the forward scuffs his shot and it flies over the City crossbar. We'd have had a contest on our hands if that would have rustled into the top corner of Joe Hart's net. As it is, we go on with City in auto pilot.
    4/23/2016 12:53:45 PM

  • 57 mins - Manchester City 2 Stoke City 0: Jesus Navas and Pablo Zabaleta unite neatly from the former's corner and the Spaniard finds Yaya Toure on the edge of Stoke's area. The Ivorian, however, lets loose on a weak effort and Jakob Haugaard saves easily down at his far post.
    4/23/2016 1:02:00 PM
  • 59 mins - Manchester City 2 Stoke City 0: Marko Arnautovic mugs Nicolas Otamendi on the left flank and surges through in on goal. Stoke's best player today, the winger then arrows an effort at Joe Hart's goal but the England 'keeper is well positioned to make a strong save. City are certainly not at their best but nonetheless still hold a two-goal lead.
    4/23/2016 1:04:12 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Manchester City 3 Stoke City 0 - Kelechi Iheanacho - 63 mins

Just as the Potters appear to be coming back into it, City hit them on the break. Pablo Zabaleta charges down the right wing and lays it on a plate for Kelechi Iheanacho to add a third for the hosts. Job done. Now to avoid any injuries...

Bournemouth: Boruc, Francis, Elphick, Cook, Daniels, Pugh, Surman, Gosling, Stanislas, Grabban, King.

Aston Villa: Guzan, Hutton, Richards, Lescott, Cissokho, Sanchez, Westwood, Gana, Bacuna, Ayew, Sinclair.

Southampton: Forster, Cedric, Fonte, Van Dijk, Bertrand, Rodriguez, Davis, Wanyama, Romeu, Tadic, Long
    4/23/2016 1:16:28 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Manchester City 4 Stoke City - Kelechi Iheanacho - 73 mins

Well, well, well. Is Kelechi Iheanacho staking a claim to start against Real Madrid. The 19-year-old is now in double figures for the season after bursting through the Stoke defence, rounding Jakob Hauguaard and making it four for City.
    4/23/2016 1:18:18 PM
  • 4/23/2016 1:28:48 PM
  • 84 mins - Manchester City 4 Stoke City 0: Manuel Pellegrini is playing a dangerous game by keeping Yaya Toure on the field when it is clear to everyone that he is struggling with an injury. The Ivorian has almost certainly told the bench he feels okay but continues to move about gingerly.
    4/23/2016 1:31:51 PM

  • FT: Manchester City 4 Stoke City 0

As you were for Manchester City ahead of possibly the biggest night in their history against Real Madrid in three days' time. Fernando, Sergio Aguero and Kelechi Iheanacho (2) scored the goals which now make a top-four finish seem all the more likely.
    4/23/2016 1:36:50 PM

  • And we're off across the grounds. Guus Hiddink got into his seat early at Bournemouth. What will the Premier League landscape look like at the end of play? If previous weeks are anything to go by, it's not worth even trying to predict.

    4/23/2016 2:01:02 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Liverpool 1 Newcastle United 0 - Daniel Sturridge - 2 mins

A tremendous and important goal to get us started in the 3pm kick-offs! Any of the Anfield top brass who are considering selling Daniel Sturridge need just watch this. Rafael Benitez's warm welcome has not been extended onto the pitch.

    4/23/2016 2:04:27 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Bournemouth 0 Chelsea 1 - Pedro - 6 mins

Chelsea take the lead against the run of play at Dean Court as Pedro breaks into a pocket of space, rounds the goalkeeper and slides it in for a tidy opener for the guests. Desperate to avoid suffering a double of defeats to the Cherries, Guus Hiddink's men are on the right track.

    4/23/2016 2:06:24 PM

  • It was all smiles for Rafael Benitez before kick-off - returning to Anfield as Newcastle manager - but Daniel Sturridge has just deepened his relegation fears with a wonder strike after 68 seconds.
    4/23/2016 2:12:07 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Aston Villa 0 Southampton 1 - Shane Long - 14 mins

Hardly surprising this one. With Villa Park regulars booing their own players, Shane Long has already hit the cross bar and now he has a goal to his name. Another miserable afternoon for relegated Villa.

    4/23/2016 2:16:44 PM

  • What future indeed. Aston Villa supporters make their feelings known yet again as their acrimonious exit from the Premier League continues.

    4/23/2016 2:22:12 PM

  • GOAL! Liverpool 2 Newcastle United 0 - Adam Lallana - 30 mins

Rafael Benitez might already be worrying about his Toon side's goal difference rather than winning any points at Anfield as Adam Lallana makes it two with a superb curled effort. Jurgen Klopp's men breezing ahead in Merseyside ahead of their Europa League tie with Villarreal in the week.

    4/23/2016 2:31:50 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Bournemouth 0 Chelsea 2 - Eden Hazard - 34 mins

Guess who's back?! Eden Hazard gets back to scoring ways to give Chelsea a precious second on the south coast. The Belgian international hits form just in time for the European Championship... It has to be said, again, that is was against the run of play but Guus Hiddink won't mind.

    4/23/2016 2:35:31 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Bournemouth 1 Chelsea 2 - Tommy Elphick - 36 mins

Eddie Howe's men get their due reward for a decent start - one which had seen them surrender a two-goal lead early on. Tommy Elphick has proven so important at the other end but now he is making waves in front of goal. Hope of a comeback now for the Cherries?

    4/23/2016 2:36:03 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Aston Villa 0 Southampton 2 - Dusan Tadic - 38 mins

It's another calamity moment for sorry Aston Villa. Joleon Lescott is beaten for pace by Shane Long who - after failing to fire past Brad Guzan - plays in Dusan Tadic to doubt the Saints' advantage in front of a furious Villa Park crowd.

    4/23/2016 2:41:09 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Aston Villa 1 Southampton 2 - Ashley Westwood - 45+1 mins)

Hope for the Villains as Ashley Westwood grabs a goal just before the break but it's done nothing to change the mood at Villa Park. A poisonous atmosphere in the Midlands. Can Southampton restore their two-goal lead in the second period.

    4/23/2016 2:48:11 PM

  • Premier League half-time scores:

    Liverpool 2 Newcastle United 0
    Bournemouth 1 Chelsea 2
    Aston Villa 1 Southampton 2

    Earlier full-time score:

Manchester City 4 Stoke City 0
    4/23/2016 2:52:18 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Liverpool 2 Newcastle United 1 - Papiss Cisse - 47 mins

Is the great escape back on? With their first effort on target of the afternoon, Vernon Anita finds Papiss Cisse who heads it past Simon Mignolet and the Mapgpies have a glimmer of hope. With Liverpool wary of tired legs ahead of the Europa League on Thursday, could Rafael Benitez's men strike?

    4/23/2016 3:08:59 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Liverpool 2 Newcastle United 2 - Jack Colback - 66 mins

Sunderland did it and now Newcastle get in on the act of comebacks at Anfield! Whatever Rafael Benitez said at half-time has clearly worked for the North East side as Jack Colback hauls them level in front of a stunned home crowd. Can they go on and win it now?

    4/23/2016 3:27:14 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Bournemouth 1 Chelsea 3 - Willian - 71 mins

That must surely be that in the south coast as Willian adds a touch of gloss to the scoreline for the outgoing champions. It's been hectic at Dean Court - and could easily be 3-1 to the hosts - but Guus Hiddink's men have dug deep to get a result.

    4/23/2016 3:29:32 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Aston Villa 1 Southampton 3 - Dusan Tadic - 71 mins

More disquiet in the stands as Dusan Tadic adds his second and Southampton's third of the afternoon to end any hopes of a Villa comeback. The hosts going down with a whimper.

    4/23/2016 3:29:53 PM
  • GOOAALL!! Aston Villa 2 Southampton 3 - Ashley Westwood - 85 mins

A reason to cheer for Villa supporters - if little else - as Ashley Westwood applies his second goal of the afternoon to make the scoreline seem less embarrassing and maybe appease some of the disgruntled fans in the Holte End.

    4/23/2016 3:44:45 PM

  • GOOAALL!! Bournemouth 1 Chelsea 4 - Eden Hazard - 90+1 mins

All over at Dean Court as Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic combine to set up Eden Hazard to volley it into the Bournemouth net. There'll be no double over the champions for Eddie Howe's men this season.

    4/23/2016 3:50:08 PM
  • GOOAALL!! Aston Villa 2 Southampton 4 - Sadio Mane - 90+2 mins

Four in five for Sadio Mane as all hopes of a Villa comeback are extinguished in added time. Everybody at Villa Park just wants to get home as quickly as possible, surely, after another torrid outing for the fallen Midlands giants.

    4/23/2016 3:52:35 PM

  • Premier League final scores

    Liverpool 2 Newcastle United 2
    Aston Villa 2 Southampton 4
    Bournemouth 1 Chelsea 4
Manchester City 4 Stoke City 0-
