  • Couple of head-to-head facts for you:
    • Everton haven't won a game in their last six visits to Southampton, losing four and drawing the other two.
    • The Toffees have a worrying habit of conceding own goals too - they handed Southampton three in their last two games at St Mary's, going on to lose 3-0 and 2-0.

    • Having beaten West Ham 2-1 in their final away game last season, a win today for Everton would see them earn their first back-to-back Premier League away victories since March 2014.

  • Some last minute insight from Danny Higginbotham on Everton and Martinez...

    8/15/2015 11:41:02 AM
  • Higginbotham: Martinez must unleash Lukaku

The IndependentAs a player, you have certain preconceptions about the way managers and teams get written up in the press. Everyone knows that a boss who has a bad four months can emerge from a season with great publicity and all the poor autumn results long forgotten, if he manages to pull a side out of the relegation fire. But the manager who starts well and fades by the springtime? He’s generally considered a failure. That assessment is often not, by any means, fair.

  • Moments to go until kick-off...
    8/15/2015 11:43:51 AM
  • Southampton vs Everton - 1 min: And we're off!
    8/15/2015 11:46:06 AM
  • Southampton vs Everton - 3 min:  Steady start to the match. Southampton in possession, playing it around the back four looking for that long ball over the top to target man Pelle.
    8/15/2015 11:49:08 AM
  • Southampton vs Everton - 4 min: Pelle will the first semi-chance of the game. Ball into the box falls nicely and Pelle tries to go for the volley but ends up slicing it and it goes out for a goal kick.

    8/15/2015 11:50:21 AM
  • Southampton vs Everton - 6 min: Lukaku storms down the left, running towards the box but is brought down by Targett. Looks to be in the penalty box but the manager makes the right call and awards Everton the free kick. Targett goes into the box with a yellow card. Barkley's free kick meets the wall and goes out for a corner.
    8/15/2015 11:52:22 AM
  • Southampton vs Everton - 7 min: Nothing comes from the corner but Southampton fail to clear. Ball in by Barry falls to Kone but his shot is deflected and goes out for another corner but again, Everton fail to capitalise delivering a sloppy corner that goes beyond the box and out for a goal-kick.
    8/15/2015 11:53:56 AM
  • Southampton vs Everton - 8 min: Barry bundles into the back of Mane, conceding a free kick in the centre of the park but the ball delivered in is easily headed away.
    8/15/2015 11:54:46 AM
  • Southampton 0-0 Everton - 11 min: Long breaks down the left and slips a light ball forward for Mane to run onto in the box. But the striker goes for the wrong option, playing the shot instead of looking to deliver the ball across the mouth of the goal and ends up going out for another goal kick.
    8/15/2015 11:57:24 AM
  • Southampton 0-0 Everton - 13 min: Barry gives away the ball in the middle, falling to Pelle on the right. The ball is headed away but heads straight back into the box to Pelle who finally finds himself in the right position. 8/15/2015 11:59:39 AM

Lukaku held his run perfectly to rise above the Everton defenders and nod the ball past Stekelenburg into the back of the net.
    8/15/2015 12:09:14 PM
  • Southampton 0-1 Everton - 25 min: Everton are ramping up the pressure now. McCarthy uses his strength to muscle past Yoshida down in the right-hand. His shot, from an incredibly tight angle, is saved by Howard and the ball goes out for another corner kick. But, again, Everton deliver a sloppy corner kick and it's easily dealt with.

    8/15/2015 12:12:34 PM
  • Southampton 0-1 Everton - 28 min: Lukaku picks the ball up on the edge of the box and plays through the ball to Barkley who finds himself unmarked in the centre of the box with only Stekelenburg  to beat. His shot is a weak one though - it looks as if he almost miss-hit it -  and Stekelenburg easily parries it away.
    8/15/2015 12:15:55 PM
  • Southampton 0-1 Everton - 31 min: Everton are looking strong now and comfortably playing it from side to side, culminating in a low and sharp cross from Coleman on the left which is headed away.

    8/15/2015 12:18:47 PM
  • Southampton 0-1 Everton - 33 min: Southampton with the free kick 40-yards out. Tadic's delivery is poor though and Barry easily claims it, heading it out for a corner. The high ball in falls to Wanyama who really should have done better but he nods the ball over the bar. A missed chance for Southampton.
    8/15/2015 12:20:16 PM

  • Southampton 0-2 Everon - 44 min: GOAL for Lukaku!
    8/15/2015 12:29:37 PM

  • Southampton 0-2 Everon - 44 min: That's another goal for Lukaku. Barkley on the break plays a through ball down the centre of the box to Lukaku who using his strength meets the ball under pressure from the closing Southampton defenders. He shoots first time and the ball ends up in the bottom right corner. The Toffees are really dominating now.

    8/15/2015 12:31:45 PM
  • Southampton 0-2 Everton - 45 + 3 min: Barkley gives away a free-kick, earning himself a yellow card in the process, but the ball by Tadic into the box is met by Howard who punches it away.
    8/15/2015 12:34:24 PM
  • Southampton 0-2 Everton - 45+3 min: And that's the whistle! Half time!
    8/15/2015 12:35:15 PM
  • Southampton 0-2 Everton - Half time: Everton head into the break on the back of a strong first-half performance. Given Everton's past-records at St Mary's, we definitely weren't expecting this. The Toffees have dominated play, especially towards the end of the first half, and Lukaku in particular has provided no end of problems for Southampton's back four.

Southampton have looked insipid, wasting countless chances. Expect an intense half-time talk from Roeman. This isn't the Southampton side that we're used to and they'll need to seriously tighten things up the back with both goals having been conceded on the back of an Everton counter-attack.
