Manchester City vs Liverpool - LIVE!

Manchester City take on Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium
by Simon Rice
Welcome to The Independent's live coverage of Manchester City vs Liverpool, with me Tom Sheen, in what is the biggest clash of the new Barclays Premier League season so far. These teams finished first and second in an extremely tense title race last year and will be looking to secure early ground for the long season ahead. We'll have all the action as it happens from the Etihad.
That will feel good for Jovetic who had an injury-hit first year at the Etihad. He only played 16 matches, though he did score six goals, last season.

It's a completely different game now and Liverpool almost look in danger of conceding another. Yaya Toure's gets some space on the right but his cross is too deep - the half-time whistle blows as the ball bounces harmlessly out of play.

    HALF-TIME: Manchester City 1 Liverpool 0

Liverpool were the better team for 40 minutes of that match, but errors against the top teams are always costly.

City don't deserve their lead - but they'll take it.

Stevan Jovetic fires Manchester City in front after Alberto Moreno's error

SECOND-HALF: We're back underway at the Etihad, no changes yet by either manager.
    8/25/2014 8:02:37 PM
Liverpool having plenty of possession in the opening couple of minutes, not doing much with it so far...
    8/25/2014 8:05:25 PM
Liverpool have it in the net but Daniel Sturridge is offside. The Reds work the ball nicely from left to right but the striker just strays when the corss comes in.
    8/25/2014 8:06:00 PM
Down the other end and Edin Dzeko really should do better with that - David Silva sets the striker free and clear but as he looks up to see where Jovetic is Dzeko takes a heavy touch and Moreno recovers to clear the ball behind.

    8/25/2014 8:07:28 PM
City back on top and they have another corner - Jovetic has really livened up and he gets on the end of Nasri's delivery but is slightly under the ball and heads over. He's grown into this game where Dzeko has remained on the periphery.
    8/25/2014 8:08:10 PM
Liverpool have a chance now with a free-kick about 30 yards out... Beautifully worked by Gerrard but Henderson's touch is too heavy! Gerrard runs up shaping to shoot but dinks the ball to Henderson who has drifted onto the left, caught in two minds the midfielder can't get it under control and Zabaleta clears.

Gerrard's corner is (absolutely infuriatingly!) poor yet again.
    8/25/2014 8:10:03 PM
GOAL! Manchester City 2 Liverpool 0

Stevan Jovetic strikes again! The Montenegrin striker plays a lovely flicked pass through his legs into Dzeko and continues his run into the box - somehow it eventually reaches him and even though he shins the ball into the ground it skips up over the turf and past Glen Johnson.
    8/25/2014 8:12:19 PM
Liverpool are shell-shocked with both goals coming against the run of play.

Defensively they're just not good enough to compete with the very best teams.
    8/25/2014 8:15:56 PM
Lazar Markovic (No 50 remember) will come on for his Liverpool debut, replacing Philippe Coutinho.

The 20-year-old cost £20m, Liverpool will be looking forward to seeing what kind of a player thaey have.
    8/25/2014 8:17:41 PM
Markovic's first touch is absolutely excellent, Moreno bursts forward and plays a one-two with the Serbian - the pass is perfectly weighted and almost puts Moreno through on goal. It's well defended by City, though.
    8/25/2014 8:18:26 PM
Markovic at the centre of things again! He has the ball on the left and almost plays a perfect pass to Daniel Sturridge, a last gasp tackle means the striker just doesn't have the time to get his shot off.
    8/25/2014 8:19:41 PM
Daniel Sturridge almost nicks one back for Liverpool! Sterling threads a ball through to Sturridge and he just gets the ball beyond Kompany, the angle is too narrow on the right and the No 15's shot flashes across the face of goal.
    8/25/2014 8:22:44 PM
Great period of pressure from Liverpool, if they can score now they'll have the confidence to go on and win this. Moreno puts in another good looking ball but Sturridge gets his timing all wrong and the ball hits the side of his head.
