Live: Xbox One - Microsoft reveals its answer to Sony's Playstation 4

In the battle of the next generation consoles, Microsoft are second to announce their offering, to be revealed today. Follow our live coverage.

  • So the news is confirmed now - and the technorati (is that a word?) are saying that there are still questions unanswered, but the main points we've learnt are:
    - It's called the XBox One, not the Xbox 720 as everyone thought
    - It's pretty big - bigger than the Xbox 360, and very slick and black, not curvy and white
    - It has a new super-sensitive Kinect sensor, plus voice control so you can just say 'Xbox on' to boot it up
    - You get Smart TV built-in, to watch all kinds of catch-up TV services
    - It matches up well with the hardware of the Sony Playstation 4 - Blu-ray, 8GB Ram
    - Top new games include the driving game Forza 5 and Call of Duty Ghosts - they look terrific
    5/21/2013 11:26:41 AM
  • The new game will be Call of Duty Ghosts
    5/21/2013 5:57:08 PM
  • Have Call of Duty been taking lessons from Fable? Ghosts to feature a dog you 'really care about'.

    5/21/2013 5:57:14 PM
  • Promises of 'dynamic maps' with floods and earthquakes, but also player-triggered events that change the flow of the game.

    5/21/2013 5:58:47 PM
  • New graphics look stunning, being compared to Modern Warfare 3. Volumetric lighting, self-casting shadow, and, of course, 'boosted poly count'

    5/21/2013 6:01:20 PM
  • New CoD trailer showing - "Soldiers stand against their enemies, but ghosts [dramatic pause] haunt them."
    5/21/2013 6:03:26 PM
  • And that's it for the live-casts, no fond-farewells, just Ghosts and out. Usual promises to see more at E3. Thanks for joining us so far - stay tuned as David Phelan keeps us updated with the Q&A in London.
    5/21/2013 6:06:09 PM
  • The simulcast is done, I'm now at the press Q&A in London. Stay tuned.
    5/21/2013 6:10:31 PM
  • Xbox Marketing Director in the UK, Harvey Eagle (cool name) is starting the Q&A session.
    5/21/2013 6:11:20 PM
  • Harvey talking through the history of Xbox and the company's record of innovations, starting with the hard drive in the first Xbox
    5/21/2013 6:13:43 PM
  • So to recap key announcements: the new generation, Xbox thinks, will be 28 per cent bigger than the current one (300 million consoles sold altogether amongst current console manufacturers).
    5/21/2013 6:14:42 PM
  • Lots more to be announced at E3 in 19 days time.
    5/21/2013 6:15:06 PM
  • Smart Match lets you pair up with the right game partner
    5/21/2013 6:15:17 PM
  • TV controls are cutting edge, like snap which puts a sidebar of extra info while you play or watch TV
    5/21/2013 6:15:49 PM
  • Trending shows what's popular among your friends and other Xbox users
    5/21/2013 6:16:18 PM
  • And the other announcement is the Halo TV series exec produced by Spielberg with Xbox only content
    5/21/2013 6:16:50 PM
  • The new Kinect sensor means less moving furniture as it has wider view
    5/21/2013 6:17:37 PM
  • 1080p camera for HD Skype calls is built into the new Kinect sensor
    5/21/2013 6:17:54 PM
  • It's an all-in-one box that does games, TV and entertainment
    5/21/2013 6:18:35 PM
  • Live TV, video, gaming, internet, rich social communication, music and apps - Microsoft's seven kinds of entertainment
    5/21/2013 6:19:23 PM
  • So do you need an always on connection: No, you don't.
    5/21/2013 6:19:25 PM
  • It's designed to be connected to the internet but if the connection fails you can still play games, Harvey says
    5/21/2013 6:19:50 PM
  • How does the TV content get into the Xbox One?
    5/21/2013 6:20:35 PM
  • Through TV service providers, over the air or over the internet. The detail comes later
    5/21/2013 6:20:54 PM
  • Not quite an answer, I'd say.
    5/21/2013 6:21:13 PM
  • Is it backward compatible?
    5/21/2013 6:21:44 PM
  • Not with Xbox 360 games. Though there are more Xbox 360 games on the way
    5/21/2013 6:22:21 PM
  • Digital content like movie or entertainment content can be downloaded again but gaming content won't work because the gaming architecture is so different.
    5/21/2013 6:22:57 PM
  • Price and date to follow - today is about painting the vision, Harvey says
    5/21/2013 6:23:24 PM
  • For live TV, the aim is to add extra content alongside the TV programmes
    5/21/2013 6:24:59 PM
  • Interesting that Xbox One seems to promise the kind of complete home entertainment and TV option that everyone thought Apple's TV would come up with...
    5/21/2013 6:26:54 PM
  • What about pre-owned games - this has been a hot topic.
    5/21/2013 6:28:51 PM
  • Answer is they're working through how this works but YES, you will be able to play second-hadn games
    5/21/2013 6:29:16 PM
  • Finally a question on how the Kinect can monitor the player's heartbeat
    5/21/2013 6:30:01 PM
  • It does this by monitoring the skin, through a high-fidelity question.
    5/21/2013 6:30:19 PM
  • sorry, high-fideltity camera
    5/21/2013 6:30:28 PM
  • Game scores can be transferred to the next console
    5/21/2013 6:30:46 PM

    5/21/2013 6:31:46 PM
  • So here's the Xbox One - it's big, but quite cool-looking, and the controller is flatter than the previous well-loved model - that's bound to divide opinion
