Wigan celebrate Ben Watson's goal...

And just a few minutes later celebrate the sound of the final whistle.

Martinez does the classic fist-pump move at the final whistle. I think he can be forgiven for forgetting about the threat of relegation for a moment.
by The Independent on May 11, 2013 at 7:21 PM

  • Full-time: Manchester City 0 Wigan 1
    • The match kicked-off at 5.15pm
    • Goalless after the first 45 mins
    • Zabaleta shown red card after 85 mins
    • Watson scores after 89 mins
    • The full time whistle goes

    5/11/2013 2:09:47 PM
  • 39 min: It's City's turn to attack - Silva plays an incredibly dangerous ball across the six yard box but there's no-one there to meet it. This game has come to life again after a bit of a dull patch.
    5/11/2013 4:55:14 PM
  • Why?

    5/11/2013 4:55:30 PM
  • 42 min: Kone shoots from outside the box, it's deflected but loops into the hands of Hart. City are then down the other end and there's Barry (whoah - two mentions inside one half!) but his shot is tame and easily dealt with by Robles.
    5/11/2013 4:58:10 PM
  • 44 min: Couple of minutes to go - a few fans confident enough there won't be a goal before the half-time whistle and are off to top up on beer and pies.
    5/11/2013 5:00:37 PM
  • 45 min: They might have been choking on their Ginsters there - Nasri with a vicious shot from outside the box which Robles does well to punch away.
    5/11/2013 5:01:33 PM
  • HT: That's it for this half. Manchester City 0 Wigan 0.
    5/11/2013 5:03:15 PM
  • HT: Wigan will surely be the happier side after that half - despite being the underdogs, you really wouldn't know it. Both sides have had good opportunities to score with Tevez for City and McManaman for Wigan will the most frustrated not to have scored in this match.
    5/11/2013 5:05:33 PM
  • HT: We'd love to here what you make of the match so far. Use the 'Make a comment' button above and we'll publish the best ones.
    5/11/2013 5:06:36 PM
  • Barry with a key tackle for City mid-way through the first half.

    5/11/2013 5:07:54 PM
  • HT: Some of the players are back out for the second half - and I've had my half-time hot dog - so I think we're just about ready for the second 45 minutes.
    5/11/2013 5:19:37 PM
  • 46 min: We're off...
    5/11/2013 5:20:13 PM
  • 48 min: Some excellent play from Wigan to set up McCarthy but he whacks his shot well wide. Come on someone - find the back of the net. Or at least the target.
    5/11/2013 5:22:21 PM
  • 50 min: When you hear a collective 'whahayyyyyyy' - you know someone's messed up. In this case it's Nasri who 'messes up' after finding himself in a good position for City.
    5/11/2013 5:24:05 PM
  • 52 min: And when you hear a collective 'oooohhhhhaaaarrrgghhhhhhh' it means somone's gone agonisingly close - in this instance Aguero who's shot is forced just wide after a cross from Tevez. Good start to the half by City.
    5/11/2013 5:25:34 PM
  • 55 min: Able to afford just about any player in the world and with a multitude of superstars to bring on from the bench - at times City can strike fear into their opponents with the substitutions they make. Right now though they're bringing on James Milner. Nasri goes off.
    5/11/2013 5:29:05 PM
  • Mancini telling someone something by the looks of it.

    5/11/2013 5:31:23 PM
  • 59 min: Surely 'Yaya ,Yaya Yaya - Kolo, Kolo Kolo' must be the most infectious chant in modern football. The City fans are singing it after Toure the midfielder knocks someone off the ball.
    5/11/2013 5:33:57 PM
  • 62 min: I might be forced to take back my dig about Milner. The England midfielder plays a fine ball through for Zabaleta who puts it across the face of the goal. Aguero can't quite get there.
    5/11/2013 5:36:27 PM
  • 65 min: Again some fine play by Wigan but after all that passing it ends up with Gomez smacking it at goal from outside the box. It's easy to wonder how Wigan find themselves in the bottom three of the Premier League - and then they do stuff like that to remind you.
    5/11/2013 5:39:35 PM
  • 67 min: Great pressure from Wigan with McManaman the architect of their best stuff - the Latics forward nearly scored one of the great FA Cup final goals there with his jinking run but, again, it comes to nothing. You get the feeling Wigan need to make their chances pay.
    5/11/2013 5:41:47 PM
  • 69 min: Again, City have more money than sense. But the man coming off the bench won't exactly have Wigan quaking in their boots. A warm welcome to Jack Rodwell! Carlos Tevez makes way.
    5/11/2013 5:43:46 PM
  • Tevez with a bicycle kick earlier in the game. Presumably that not working out might have had something to do with Mancini's decision to ask him to get on his bike and make way for Rodwell.

    5/11/2013 5:44:39 PM
  • 73 min: City win a freek-kick to the edge of the box. Kone's not happy about the positioning of it though and decides to pick the ball up and throw it back. Milner then places it back where it was - these two could be a double act! Good free-kick though and the resulting header takes a good save from Robles to keep out.
    5/11/2013 5:48:00 PM
  • 75 min: A dark cloud has taken position over the top of Wembley - there's an eery feel inside the stadium. It could get a lot more ominous for one of these sides with a goal now. Both teams look a threat.
    5/11/2013 5:49:38 PM
  • 76 min - HITS THE WOODWORK: God knows if Maloney meant that but as he fizzes a cross in the ball comes down on top of the bar. The heavens have opened.
    5/11/2013 5:50:59 PM
  • 79 min: With the Wigan fans expressing their love for their team away to my left and an increasing fear coming from the City fans to my right - you could say this is setting up nicely for the last 10 minutes.
    5/11/2013 5:54:04 PM
  • 82 min: Wigan make a change - Gomez comes off and Watson comes on. While that won't strike fear into City - no changes Martinez could possibly make would.
    5/11/2013 5:56:29 PM
  • Kompany heads at goal to no avail.

    5/11/2013 5:57:03 PM
  • 85 min - RED CARD: Zabaleta, booked earlier in the match, has received another for a challenge on McManaman. Fair booking and City are in trouble!
    5/11/2013 5:59:24 PM
  • 86 min: Maloney takes the resulting free-kick but it's over the bar. The City fans are doing their best to raise their team but you'd have to back Wigan now.
    5/11/2013 6:00:55 PM
  • 88 min: Barry now goes into the book for a late challenge on Maloney. Good position for a free-kick...
    5/11/2013 6:02:17 PM
  • 89 min: ...and that's why Ben Watson isn't the best player you can bring off the bench. Straight into the wall.
    5/11/2013 6:03:13 PM
  • 89 min - GOAL!!!!!!!!: Ben Watson for Wigan... Wow - talk about smash and grab. So simple, corner comes in from the right and Watson meets it at the front post and glances it in.
    5/11/2013 6:05:32 PM
  • 90 + 1 min: Dzeko is on for City. We're in injury time.
    5/11/2013 6:07:00 PM
  • 90 + 3 min: Three minutes of injury time to play and Robles has been booked for wasting time. Don't think he'll mind about that.
    5/11/2013 6:07:41 PM
  • 90 + 3 min: Robles out of his box to clear it. Throw to City - last chance...
    5/11/2013 6:08:12 PM
  • 90 + 4 min: It's been pinging around inside the Wign box but no goal - and we've now had three minutes...
    5/11/2013 6:08:50 PM
  • FT: Full-time - Wigan have won the FA Cup!
    5/11/2013 6:09:28 PM
  • FT: The Wigan players and staff all run onto the pitch - they're going mental!
    5/11/2013 6:10:09 PM
  • FT: In contrast City's players are on their knees - for all their riches they've won nothing this season. The talk about Mancini's future will only increase after this. But today, it's all about Wigan...
    5/11/2013 6:11:35 PM
  • Zabaleta is shown a red card late in the game.

    5/11/2013 6:12:19 PM
  • FT: What a story this is. Wigan, a team that only a few years back were in the bottom division have won the FA Cup, in what is not only their first win - it was their first final!
    5/11/2013 6:13:37 PM
  • The moment that mattered - Ben Watson scores the only goal of the game right at the death.

    5/11/2013 6:15:03 PM
  • FT: It is absolutely pouring down here at Wembley. At least the City players and fans will be able to pass their tears off as the rain.
    5/11/2013 6:17:44 PM
  • FT: City go and collect their runners up medals. I think it's fair to say that's not what they came here for, or what they expected today.
    5/11/2013 6:19:18 PM
  • Martinez does the classic fist-pump move at the final whistle. I think he can be forgiven for forgetting about the threat of relegation for a moment.

    5/11/2013 6:21:15 PM
  • FT: After walking up those famous steps (107 to be exact) - Wigan have enough energy to lift the FA Cup when they get there. Cue confetti and loud music.
    5/11/2013 6:23:31 PM
  • Wigan celebrate Ben Watson's goal...

    5/11/2013 6:25:18 PM
  • FT: If you've been following me from the start - I mentioned before kick-off that they were playing 'I'm a believer' on the loud speaker. Well it's on again and Wigan's fans are singing it with even more gusto then they were then. Quite right too.
    5/11/2013 6:26:20 PM
  • And just a few minutes later celebrate the sound of the final whistle.

    5/11/2013 6:26:57 PM
  • With 'It's going to be a good night' playing over the loud speaker - I have no doubt that it will be for everyone associated with Wigan. That's it from me - thanks for following all the action here at The Independent. Good night.
