  • Full time: Benfica 1 Chelsea 2
    • The match kicked off at 7.45pm
    • Frank Lampard captains Chelsea in absence of John Terry
    • The match goalless at half-time
    • Torres puts Chelsea ahead after 59 mins
    • Cardozo scores from the penalty spot after a handball by Azpilicueta in the box
    • Ivanovic scores a header for Chelsea deep into injury time
    • The full time whistle goes
    • CHELSEA WIN THE EUROPA LEAGUE

    5/15/2013 8:39:07 PM
  • 37 min: Chelsea keep giving the ball away. It won't come as a surprise that Torres is among the offenders.
    5/15/2013 7:22:02 PM
  • 39 min - CLOSE: Lampard finds some space on the edge of the box and unleashes a ferocious shot that moves in the air. It nearly moves out of the reach of Artur, but not quite. That really was close.
    5/15/2013 7:23:53 PM
  • 41 min: Chelsea getting closer. The cross comes in from Mata and with Torres lurking the only Benfica player in the vicinity gets it away. Five minutes to go in this half.
    5/15/2013 7:26:24 PM
  • 43 min: However, the next chance falls to Cardozo of Benfica and it takes some great defending from Cahill to deflect his diving header away.
    5/15/2013 7:27:28 PM
  • Andy Townsend on what Chelsea need to do...

When they get in those last thirds they need to quicken it up a little bit.

    Cheers Andy.

    5/15/2013 7:29:15 PM
  • HT: The half-time whistle goes just after a long-range effort from Lampard. That one won't be coming down any time before the start of the second 45 minutes.
    5/15/2013 7:32:38 PM
  • HT: Tetchy, bitty stuff from Chelsea so far with just the odd signs of the quality they have. Benfica have been the better side and will be frustrated not to have opened the scoring after a few great passing moves. It's 0-0 though and Benitez will be delighted to get his team in for his penultimate half-time team talk as Chelsea manager.
    5/15/2013 7:35:23 PM
  • Ramires and Cahill get the ball away...

    5/15/2013 7:36:55 PM
  • HT: Second half underway shortly. Lets hope for some goal action.
    5/15/2013 7:45:24 PM
  • Before then, a few stats from Opta...

    5/15/2013 7:46:45 PM
  • 46 min: We're underway for the second half. Chelsea need to "up their game a bit" according to Lee Dixon. #Advice.
    5/15/2013 7:47:56 PM
  • One more stat for you provided by our very own Sam Wallace...

    5/15/2013 7:49:05 PM
  • 48 min: Benfica fans doing a lot of bouncing. Chelsea fans doing a lot of hand clapping. That's about all to report so far this half.
    5/15/2013 7:50:48 PM
  • 51 min: Gaitan with what would have been a spectacular goal. However, his volley after a quick one-two skims well wide of the post. Rodrigo then nearly latches onto a low cross in the box. Good start by Benfica.
    5/15/2013 7:53:13 PM
  • 52 min - GOAL RULED OUT: Gaitan plays a great ball into the box and Cardozo nods it into the back of the net. Offside though.
    5/15/2013 7:54:06 PM
  • 54 min: Chelsea are having enough warnings but they just can't seem to keep ahold of the ball for any length of time. Not sure they've "upped their game" as Lee Dixon suggested they should.
    5/15/2013 7:55:44 PM
  • 55 min: Despite Benfica being well on top here, Jorge Jesus appears to be going mental down on the touchline. I'd keep out of his way if his side are losing.
    5/15/2013 7:57:51 PM
  • 57 min: Better from Chelsea. First Ramires is guilty of being offside when in a great position and then Oscar goes close inside the box but the defender beats him to the ball. Just.
    5/15/2013 7:59:19 PM
  • Cahill with a great defensive header...

    5/15/2013 8:00:41 PM
  • 59 min - GOAL!!!: Torres puts Chelsea ahead! A quick ball forward is latched onto by the Spaniard. He holds off the defender then rounds the keeper. He's still got a lot to do but is able to find the back of the net from a tight angle. That's why you pay £50m.
    5/15/2013 8:02:20 PM
  • 63 min: Talk about against the run of play that goal. And Chelsea have a decent chance to double their advantage but with a free-kick in a great position, Mata puts it into the wall.
    5/15/2013 8:05:44 PM
  • 65 min: Chants of "we know what we are, Champions of Europe" coming from the Chelsea end. For a week and a half they'll be double champions of Europe. Until Dortmund or Bayern claim the Champions League that is.
    5/15/2013 8:07:10 PM
  • Torres scores the opening goal of the match...

    5/15/2013 8:08:17 PM
  • 67 min - PENALTY!: Penalty to Benfica for a handball by Azpilicueta! A bit harsh but it did hit the Chelsea defender's hand.
    5/15/2013 8:09:44 PM
  • 68 min - GOAL!: Cardozo blasts it to the left. Cech goes the other way. 1-1!
    5/15/2013 8:10:31 PM
  • 72 min: Well this game has come to life. A bit more on that penalty call. The ref gave himself an age to think about it before deciding Azpilicueta was guilty. The ball only travelled a short distance to his hand but the Chelsea defender had his hands up when he didn't need to. Kind of depends which side your supporting to call that one.
    5/15/2013 8:14:18 PM
  • Chelsea pictured celebrating the opening goal...

    5/15/2013 8:15:36 PM
  • 76 min - PENALTY SHOUT: Torres turns inside the box before throwing himself to the ground. The defender is all over him but Tom Daley would have been proud of that eventual tumble.
    5/15/2013 8:18:40 PM
  • Jesus! Yes, Jorge Jesus, doing what he does best on the touchline...

    5/15/2013 8:20:32 PM
  • The Independent's Sam Wallace in Amsterdam...

    5/15/2013 8:21:22 PM
  • 80 min: We've had a couple of injury breaks but we're about to enter the last 10 minutes. This could go either way.
    5/15/2013 8:22:10 PM
  • 82 min: Just when you think Torres might be back to his best (finally) - he reminds you how rubbish he's become. The Spaniard gets into a great position and can feed the ball into Ramires to his right but plays it behind his team-mate and the move falls apart.
    5/15/2013 8:23:55 PM
  • 83 min - GREAT SAVE: Cech tips over a half-volley from Cardozo. And the Benfica striker almost scores just after but somehow clears the ball away from the goal rather than shooting at it.
    5/15/2013 8:24:58 PM
  • 85 min: Ramires goes on a great run into the box but Luisao makes a goal saving challenge at the last moment.
    5/15/2013 8:27:28 PM
  • Cardozo scores Benfica's equaliser from the penalty spot...

    5/15/2013 8:28:04 PM
  • ...and then celebrates his goal.

    5/15/2013 8:29:00 PM
  • 87 min: Azpilicueta shoots from the edge of the box. The high-pitched voice from the commentator isn't warranted though. That was nothing more than a daisy cutter.
    5/15/2013 8:29:52 PM
  • 89 min - OFF THE WOODWORK: What a story that would have been. Out of nowhere Lampard whacks it from range and it crashes back out off the bar. It remains 1-1 though.
    5/15/2013 8:31:23 PM
  • 90 min - PING BALL: The ball is flying around the Chelsea box but Oscar eventually gets it away. Both sides going for this.
    5/15/2013 8:32:24 PM
  • 90 + 1 min: 3 minutes of injury time to play...
    5/15/2013 8:33:16 PM
  • 90 + 3 min: Corner to Chelsea...
    5/15/2013 8:34:49 PM
  • 90 + 3 min - GOAL!!!: Ivanovic has won the Europa League for Chelsea!!! A deep corner from Mata and Ivanovic rises unchallenged. He heads it back across goal and it drifts under the bar with the keeper rooted to the spot.
    5/15/2013 8:35:20 PM
  • 90 + 5 min: Benfica hoof it forward and it is so close. Ivanovic gets it all wrong and Cardozo looks like he's about to poke it in but somehow can't.
    5/15/2013 8:37:35 PM
  • FT: Get your kit on John Terry - the final whistle has gone. Chelsea win 2-1 and have won the Europa League.
    5/15/2013 8:38:16 PM
  • FT: What an amazing end to the match. Chelsea fans chanting "we know what we are" and in case you don't - they're Europa League champions.
    5/15/2013 8:40:03 PM
  • FT: You have to give it to Chelsea - they certainly know how to make European finals dramatic. Penalty wins and losses and now a last minute winner.
    5/15/2013 8:41:03 PM
  • FT - BREAKING NEWS: John Terry has his Chelsea kit on.
    5/15/2013 8:41:52 PM
  • Rafael Benitez on the pitch...

I think it was a great performance in the second half. I'm really pleased for the players, everyone involved.

Not going to name check the fans then Rafa? Fair enough.
    5/15/2013 8:45:22 PM
  • Torres pictured opening the scoring...

    5/15/2013 8:45:41 PM

  • Ivanovic celebrates his late late goal...

    5/15/2013 8:48:58 PM
  • FT: ITV appear determined to get Lampard to say he's signed a new deal. The midfielder refuses to confirm it though. Although after tonight surely there's no doubt he'll agree one.
    5/15/2013 8:50:29 PM
  • FT: Chelsea are on their way up to collect the trophy... Just to confirm, JT is amongst them, in full (nd very clean) kit.
    5/15/2013 8:51:18 PM
  • Let's get this party started! Joy for Chelsea at the final whistle...

    5/15/2013 8:52:23 PM
  • But, as they say on these occasions in football, heartbreak for Benfica...

    5/15/2013 8:53:20 PM
  • FT: For those who voted in our poll and selected that the trophy lifting would be a bromance for Terry and Lampard - CONGRATULATIONS! That's exactly what happens.
    5/15/2013 8:55:13 PM
  • The Independent's Sam Wallace on the Uefa president...

    5/15/2013 9:02:41 PM
  • And some more from Sam...

    5/15/2013 9:03:11 PM
  • For all the talk about how useless Fernando Torres is - there are a few facts that just can't be avoided. Since moving to Chelsea he's helped them win the Champions League and now the Europa League with crucial goals. And don't forget the small matter of a World Cup and a couple of Euros to his name. This little stat from Opta helps me make my point...

    5/15/2013 9:06:59 PM
  • That's it from me, Simon Rice. Many thanks for joining me for what turned into a cracking match in the second half. Congratulations to Chelsea. Good night.
    5/15/2013 9:09:54 PM
  • It might not be the Champions League, but it's a lovely looking cup - and Chelsea have got their hands on it.
