  • HT: That said, the best chance of the match fell to England - and one Wayne Rooney. After all the talk about his world class ability and how he can make the difference - when gifted a simple header to put the Three Lions ahead, he nodded wide.
    6/19/2012 7:34:09 PM
  • Can't see England getting much further in the tournament playing like this.
    6/19/2012 7:34:16 PM
  • I'd want a lot more than 8:1 on Rooney scoring next. #ProveMeWrong
  • Carroll on for Rooney, Walcott on for Milner: problems solved
  • HT: Let us know your thoughts by commenting above. We'll publish the best ones.
    6/19/2012 7:35:43 PM
  • HT: In tonight's other match, France are drawing 0-0 with Sweden. As it stands England and France will progress with England going on to play Spain and France facing Italy in the quarter-finals.
    6/19/2012 7:36:50 PM
  • I dont see England goin anywhere like this
    6/19/2012 7:38:10 PM
  • Where's the flair and creativity?
    6/19/2012 7:41:19 PM
  • Think they will get nowhere at this rate my thoughts are to change to a stronger team
    6/19/2012 7:41:22 PM
  • It's about time they kicked Rooney into touch once and for all, he may have been talented once but that seems to have disappeared, he is just an overpaid second rater who doesn't deserve to play for his country
    6/19/2012 7:43:38 PM
  • a winning combination should never be changed...rooney should have been rested....
    6/19/2012 7:44:25 PM
  • HT: A lot of anti-Rooney talk. The 'big man' will be wanting to prove everyone wrong second half. We'll be back underway in a minute.
    6/19/2012 7:46:36 PM
  • 46 min: We're back underway. Remember England only need a draw to progress. Ukraine must win.
    6/19/2012 7:48:25 PM
  • Stop calling England.....all we need is a draw then the real matches start.....ENGLAND AND PROUD!!!!!!!
    6/19/2012 7:48:32 PM
  • 48 min: No changes at half-time as Milner wins England a corner.
    6/19/2012 7:50:32 PM
  • GOAL! Rooney!
    6/19/2012 7:50:56 PM
  • 49 min: Gerrard's corner is poor but he wins it back on the right hand side and drills it across the box. There's a deflection and all Rooney has to do is nod it in at the back post from a yard out. What was all that anti-Rooney talk?
    6/19/2012 7:52:17 PM
  • WHooo Hooo- way to GO ROOOOOOONNNNEEYYYYY
    6/19/2012 7:52:24 PM
  • 51 min: Ukraine straight on the attack. Dangerous cross but England deal with it. Since Hodgson took over, whenever England have taken the lead they haven't lost.
    6/19/2012 7:54:22 PM
  • 53 min: Fine touches from Milevskiy before Hart has to touch a cross behind for a corner. It's headed out for another by Cole. Welbeck gets the next one away.
    6/19/2012 7:55:55 PM
  • 55 min: Rooney breaks free and looks to be bearing down on goal, but he's outdone for pace and Yarmolenko gets back and deals with him. Looked to be in there. Is Rooney fully fit?
    6/19/2012 7:57:46 PM
  • having the pleasure of watching this game on brazilian tv - that bit of skill has just been described as 'a drible da vaca' - the dribble of the cow!!! any brazilians enlighten us???
    6/19/2012 7:58:04 PM
  • 56 min: Sweden have taken the lead against France.
    6/19/2012 7:58:49 PM
  • 59 min: Just a reminder - Ukraine must win here tonight. I predict gaps for England and Hodgson's side are looking in the mood now.
    6/19/2012 8:01:31 PM
  • 59 min: Dangerous cross from Young but Ukraine get it away before Rooney gives away a free kick.
    6/19/2012 8:02:16 PM
  • 61 min: The mostly Ukrainian crowd, along with their team, have gone somewhat limp. Surely Shevchenko will be introduced soon.
    6/19/2012 8:03:22 PM
  • 62 min: So close from Milevskiy. A quick corner and the striker is found inside the six yard box, but he heads over. That should be 1-1.
    6/19/2012 8:04:40 PM
  • 63 min: Controversy here. Ukraine think they've scored. The ball looks over the line but Terry hooks it away and the referee sides with the Three Lions. Replays show it's over!
    6/19/2012 8:06:17 PM
  • 65 min: No goal though and England go up the other end where Scott Parker wins a free-kick. Rooney misses to the left of the goal - close though. It should be 1-1 here. That was definitely a goal for Ukraine.
    6/19/2012 8:07:26 PM
  • segun, just searched it, a 'drible da vaca' is "kicking the ball to one side of an opponent and dashing around the other side to collect it".
    6/19/2012 8:07:48 PM
  • 66 min: How the extra official didn't see it we'll never know. It was clearly over. Why do they stand there with their silly sticks if it isn't for incidents like that.
    6/19/2012 8:09:13 PM
  • 68 min: Good tackling back by Welbeck but Rooney's pass for Milner is not precise enough. Space opening up.
    6/19/2012 8:10:51 PM
  • 69 min: Cole nearly scores his first England goal. Rooney puts the keeper under pressure. It breaks to the left back with his shot going in but it's topped round the post.
    6/19/2012 8:11:44 PM
  • To be fair, that's a bit of justice for the 2010 worldcup where we were robbed of a goal!
    6/19/2012 8:11:50 PM
  • 70 min: Walcott is on for Milner. The Arsenal man's pace could be a real menace here.
    6/19/2012 8:12:32 PM
  • 71 min: Devic is off for Shevchenko. He needs two goals again if Ukraine want to stay in this tournament.
    6/19/2012 8:13:38 PM
  • where's all the clamour for goal-line tech now?? if england hold out for a win, would it not be karma from the world cup events?? dont always agree with SAF but i do think he was right when he said that all these things tended to even themselves out??
    6/19/2012 8:14:54 PM
  • 73 min: Ukraine win a corner but Rakitskiy's delivery is over everyone. Poor.
    6/19/2012 8:15:50 PM
  • 73 min: Gerrard is booked.
    6/19/2012 8:16:20 PM
  • 74 min: Hart saves a great shot from Konoplianka but parries it. The England keeper is saved by Lescott who follows it up well and clears it away under pressure.
    6/19/2012 8:17:34 PM
  • 76 min: Welbeck feeds Rooney but Ukraine manage to get it away for a corner which is delivered to England's number 10 at the back post. He heads it at goal but there are too many bodies in the way.
    6/19/2012 8:18:44 PM
  • 79 min: Gusev lofts it into the box from the right hand side before a poor shot from range. Milevskiy is off for striker Butko and Nazarenko is on for Garmash. Offensive tactics. Cole is booked for wasting time. Silly.
    6/19/2012 8:21:44 PM
  • 81 min: England are looking good for the win. Ukraine unable to sustain much pressure and England looking increasingly dangerous on the break. Nazarenko shoots over from range.
    6/19/2012 8:24:13 PM
  • 82 min: Welbeck is off for Carroll. Surprised Rooney is not taken off considering lack of game time recently.
    6/19/2012 8:25:19 PM
  • 83 min: It's lofted straight to the big Liverpool striker but it goes out for a goal kick.
    6/19/2012 8:26:16 PM
  • 85 min: Ukraine win a corner which Terry puts behind for another under pressure from former team-mate Shevchenko. The next one is dangerous but in the end comes to nothing. Goal kick.
    6/19/2012 8:28:13 PM
  • 87 min: England defending well here as Young wins a free-kick on the half-way line. Rooney is off for Chamberlain.
    6/19/2012 8:29:44 PM
  • 88 min: Still 1-0 to Sweden in the other match as Carroll bundles around in the box to no avail.
    6/19/2012 8:31:01 PM
  • 90 min: Parker with another block before confusion in the England box. Chamberlain breaks but loses possession
    6/19/2012 8:32:51 PM
  • 91 min: We're into injury time here. England looking good for the quarters as Lescott hoofs it away. There will be 3 mins added time.
    6/19/2012 8:33:59 PM
  • 92 min: Yarmolenko curls it from the edge of the box but it's just over.
    6/19/2012 8:34:34 PM
  • 92 min: Sweden are 2-0 up.
    6/19/2012 8:35:00 PM
  • 93 min: Dreadful ball forward from Ukraine. Surely that's about it.
    6/19/2012 8:36:26 PM
  • FT: It's full-time. England 1 Ukraine 0. The goalscorer? One Wayne Rooney. The big man's back - and so are England.
    6/19/2012 8:37:21 PM
  • FT: It's full time in the other game with Sweden beating France 2-0. The French are through and will face Spain in the next round.
    6/19/2012 8:39:02 PM
  • FT: Great result for England and their Euro 2012 journey continues.
    6/19/2012 8:40:28 PM
  • This is sooooooo good! Come on England!
    6/19/2012 8:40:45 PM
  • FT: Whilst it wasn't a vintage performance, England created enough and were able to go ahead through a Rooney goal soon after the restart. Hodgson's side defended brilliantly after that and limited Ukraine to half-chances and long shots except one opportunity. Ukraine put the ball over the line but the officials failed to give it. Analysis has shown there should have been an offside decision in the build up though.
    6/19/2012 8:41:56 PM
  • FT: England will be delighted to avoid Spain in the quarter-finals - instead facing Italy in the last eight on Sunday.
