Euro 2012: England v Ukraine

Minute-by-minute updates from England's crucial Group D match against co-hosts Ukraine

  • Welcome to The Independent's coverage of England's third group game of Euro 2012 - against co-hosts Ukraine.
    6/19/2012 6:30:53 PM
  • Here are tonight's teams...
    6/19/2012 6:32:59 PM
  • England (4-4-1-1): Hart; Johnson, Terry, Lescott, Cole; Milner, Gerrard, Parker, Young; Rooney; Welbeck.
Subs: Green, Kelly, Walcott, Henderson, Carroll, Baines, Jones, Jagielka, Downing, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Defoe, Butland.
    6/19/2012 6:33:11 PM
  • Ukraine (4-4-2): Pyatov; Gusev, Khacheridi, Selin, Rakitskiy; Yarmolenko, Tymoschuk, Konoplianka, Garmash; Devic, Milevskiy.
Subs: Koval, Kucher, Shevchenko, Aliev, Voronin, Shevchuk, Rotan, Seleznyov, Mykhalyk, Nazarenko, Butko, Goryainov.
    6/19/2012 6:33:36 PM
  • Wayne Rooney, as expected, returns to the starting line-up, with Andy Carroll dropping to the bench. There was much talk before kick-off that Theo Walcott, who made such an impact after coming on against Sweden would start tonight. But manager Roy Hodgson has opted to stick with the same midfield that started against Sweden, meaning James Milner is out on the right hand side.
    6/19/2012 6:35:10 PM
  • Shevchenko, who was rated at 50/50 before kick-off, will not start for Ukraine in what is a major blow for the co-hosts. He scored both goals as Ukraine came from behind to beat Sweden. The importance of the former Chelsea striker cannot be underestimated; Ukraine have had only seven shots on target during this tournament - five of them have come from Shevchenko.

  • We're less than 10 minutes away from kick-off. Feel free to join in the action by leaving your comments.
    6/19/2012 6:37:44 PM
  • The teams are on their way out in the 23 degree heat of Donestk.
    6/19/2012 6:39:56 PM
  • As the national anthems are played - lets take a look at some stats. England and Ukraine have met just four times. The first three encounters were won by England, but their most recent match - a 2010 World Cup qualifier - was won 1-0 by Ukraine.
    6/19/2012 6:40:41 PM
  • A good omen for England will be that Ukraine have failed to win their previous six games in Donetsk - the venue for tonight's game.
    6/19/2012 6:41:32 PM
  • The anthems are done. This is it - can England progress to the next stage?
    6/19/2012 6:43:10 PM
  • If you weren't aware already - a draw for England would guarantee their place in the quarter-finals. A win would also see England through to the last eight - and a win by a bigger margin than France (presuming they beat Sweden) would see Roy Hodgson's side top the group. England could even lose tonight and still progress - we'll give you the details on that one if and when it comes to it.

    6/19/2012 6:47:50 PM
  • 4 min: The crowd could have a big influence tonight, and already they're making their voices hear - cheering wildly when Ukraine do anything, and booing England when they dare hold on to it. Poor pass from Johnson.

  • 6 min: Ukraine must win tonight and they've started the more positive of the two teams. Some nice passing from the co-hosts.
    6/19/2012 6:51:21 PM
  • 6 min: Rooney makes first contribution - meandering down the left hand side. It doesn't lead anywhere though. The United frontman has started behind his club team-mate Welbeck.
    6/19/2012 6:53:04 PM
  • 9 min: Yarmolenko finds space in attack for Ukraine but can't get a shot away.
    6/19/2012 6:54:57 PM

  • 19 min: Konoplianka has a shot blocked on the edge of the box. Good football again from Ukraine.
    6/19/2012 7:04:36 PM
  • Lucky these Ukranians can't shoot straight.
    6/19/2012 7:04:46 PM
  • 21 min: Ukraine with all the possession. Cross from the right is dealt with by Terry but it's straight back to the men in blue and they come again. Playing for a win England? Not by the looks of it.
    6/19/2012 7:07:07 PM
  • 23 min: Young misjudges a bounce and it allows Gusev to get in on the right hand side. He comes inside and is allowed to shoot. It's over, but surely Ukraine will start finding the target if it carries on like this.
    6/19/2012 7:09:14 PM
  • 24 min: Gerrard has a free-kick on the right hand side. It's a fantastic ball and Rooney is nearly on the end of it. Corner.
    6/19/2012 7:10:06 PM

    6/19/2012 7:10:56 PM
  • 27 min: Young wins England a free-kick on the left hand side. Gerrard puts it in the box but it's out for a goal-kick after Milner fails to control the ball.
    6/19/2012 7:12:15 PM
  • 29 min: Dreadful miss from Rooney. England pass it around well with Terry playing the ball to Young on the wing. It's a perfect delivery and Rooney is free in the box. He heads it but it drops the wrong side of the post. Poor poor miss. Would Carroll have scored that?
    6/19/2012 7:14:41 PM

    6/19/2012 7:19:37 PM

    6/19/2012 7:27:04 PM
  • 44 min: Great trickery from Yarmolenko wins Ukraine a corner. But the delivery is poor and it's a goal-kick.
    6/19/2012 7:29:25 PM
  • HT: Half-time. England 0 Ukraine 0
    6/19/2012 7:31:37 PM
  • HT: A disappointing half from England. They've failed to get going and it has to be said that Ukraine were the better team in the first 45 minutes.
