  • You may not know all that much about tonight's opponents San Marino. So here's a few bits for you.
    10/12/2012 6:48:42 PM
  • The small republic in Italy has a population of 33,000 - about a third of the expected attendance here in Wembley tonight. In their 114 games, they've won one, drawn five and lost 108. They've lost their last 54 competitive internationals. San Marino's heaviest defeat was 13-0 against Germany in 2006. If England surpass that tonight, it would be a new record for the Three Lions, surpassing the 13 they put past Ireland in 1882.
    10/12/2012 6:48:50 PM
  • And how about a bit about the players. Only one of them is a professional, with the rest a mix of office workers and students. Here's a breakdown of what they all do...

  • It can't be easy being a San Marino fan, for which an allocation of 300 tickets were provided tonight. Their side concedes 25 goals for every one they score.
    10/12/2012 6:52:00 PM
  • Okay, returning to the home side. As was announced yesterday, Rooney captains the side - only the second time he has done so. You can read what The Independent’s Sam Wallace thought about the decision to hand the Manchester United striker the armband here… www.independent.co.uk
    10/12/2012 6:52:59 PM
  • Here come the teams - led by a very proud looking Wazza.
    10/12/2012 6:53:50 PM
  • Perhaps the most interesting bit of team news for England is that Leighton Baines starts ahead of Ashley Cole. There is no suggestion that Cole has been left out because of his recent Twitter misdemeanour, but rather this provides a good opportunity to give Baines some more minutes and keep Cole fresh for the match against Poland on Tuesday. Unless Cole makes an appearance off the bench, it means he'll have to wait beyond next week to reach his 100th cap.
    10/12/2012 6:54:41 PM
  • With a maximum capacity crowd of 90,000 here at Wembley tonight, this fixture against officially the worst team in the world according to Fifa, has thankfully been given a bit of bite. Fans won't be satisfied with anything less than a drubbing and Roy Hodgson appears to have set up his team accordingly. The combination of Cleverley, Walcott, Rooney, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Welbeck has an exciting feel to it. And with Baines bombing forward on one side and Walker on the other the bus San Marino are sure to park across their goal should take a battering.

  • Get the feeling we may not be taking this fixture seriously. The match ball is being delivered by an armed forces personell abseiling in from the roof.
    10/12/2012 7:01:02 PM
  • 1 min: We're off here at Wembley.
    10/12/2012 7:01:24 PM
  • 1 min: The last time San Marino played England they were ahead after 8.3 seconds. No such luck tonight.
    10/12/2012 7:01:52 PM
  • 3 min: San Marino defending deep - no surprise there then. Baines very advanced as Chamberlain plays a loose ball into the box.
    10/12/2012 7:03:30 PM
  • 4 min: England win a corner which is worked to Chamberlain on the edge of the box before the Arsenal man shoots. It's tipped over.
    10/12/2012 7:04:33 PM
  • 5 min: Rooney puts Walcott through and as he attempts to loft the ball of the keeper the pair clatter. Hard. The Arsenal winger is receiving treatment.
    10/12/2012 7:06:29 PM
  • 7 min: Reckless stuff from Simoncini in the corner of his penalty box but he did get a slight touch on the ball. Walcott is still down and the stretcher is out.
    10/12/2012 7:07:31 PM
  • 8 min: Round of applause as Walcott sits up. Hodgson looks furious on the bench.
    10/12/2012 7:09:10 PM
  • 10 min: Things are under way again. San Marino yet to have a touch in the England half.
    10/12/2012 7:10:47 PM
  • 11 min: Aaron Lennon is on for Walcott.
    10/12/2012 7:11:48 PM
  • 12 min: Cleverley comes close to getting in on goal from Walkers pass but it's just over hit. Another corner to England.
    10/12/2012 7:13:15 PM
  • 13 min: Baines delivers but Rooney's header goes wide.
    10/12/2012 7:14:02 PM
  • 14 min: I can report that after 14 minutes San Marino have had their first touch in the England half.
    10/12/2012 7:14:51 PM
  • 16 min: It's a bit quiet here right now. The 90,000 in Wembley need a goal. Instead they are able to give Joe Hart a cheer for having a touch.
    10/12/2012 7:16:59 PM
  • 17 min: It's worked to Baines whose near post cross is nearly turned into the net by Brolli. Would have been a bit of a wally had he done so.
    10/12/2012 7:18:25 PM
  • 19 min: England are not sharp enough right now. This is getting a bit frustrating as Rooney makes a mistake - not the captain's first tonight either.
    10/12/2012 7:20:26 PM
  • 21 min: Better from Rooney who feeds Walker out on the right. His cross is deflected and Simoncini is able to hold onto it.
    10/12/2012 7:21:27 PM
  • 22 min: Some more precise passing from England allows Rooney to get away a shot which results in a corner. It's taken quickly but to no real advantage.
    10/12/2012 7:23:24 PM
  • 23 min: Chamberlain exchanges passes with Rooney but his cross is turned away. Another corner for England.
    10/12/2012 7:24:12 PM
  • 24 min: It's taken short again. To no avail again. Come on.
    10/12/2012 7:24:53 PM
  • 25 min: Chamberlain shoots but it's straight at the keeper. Simoncini fumbles but it just escapes the advancing Welbeck. Better.
    10/12/2012 7:26:08 PM
  • 26 min: Baines' cross loops up to Rooney but the United striker heads over. Decent chance that. Rooney was saying this week that "the key" to to this match would be scoring early. With 26 minutes gone England are yet to unlock San Marino.
    10/12/2012 7:27:50 PM
  • 30 min: Another corner to England which eventually ends up with Cahill on the six yard box. Nice touch by the Chelsea defender but his shot doesn't make it to goal.
    10/12/2012 7:30:41 PM
  • 31 min: Chamberlain, who's been England's most energetic player up to this stage, shoots from range. It's well over though.
    10/12/2012 7:31:23 PM
  • 33 min: Baines makes a run down the left and wins England a corner. It's punched away by the keeper but comes back in. The crowd think it's in but Rooney's header is just wide. Close.
    10/12/2012 7:33:43 PM
  • 34 min: Carrick shoots from outside the box. It's off the underside of the bar and back out. Welbeck then hits the post. Hold on though - PENALTY!
    10/12/2012 7:35:27 PM
  • 35 min: Rooney steps up to take it.
    10/12/2012 7:35:44 PM
  • 36 min: GOAL! England 1 San Marino 0.
    10/12/2012 7:36:07 PM
  • 36 min: Lovely penalty from Rooney after Welbeck was brought down by the keeper. Rooney is now level with Alan Shearer, Nat Lofthouse and Tom Finney on 30 goals for England.
    10/12/2012 7:37:09 PM
  • 38 min: GOAL! England 2 San Marino 0.
