  • Michael Carrick is expected to start tonight in place of Frank Lampard...

Carrick – who has not started for England since the 2-2 international friendly draw with Brazil in June – trained alongside captain Steven Gerrard, and having considered starting with the 32-year-old earlier in the week, reports suggest the United midfielder has done enough to earn a recall.

  • The fact the FA have given 18,000 tickets to Poland fans has caused a bit of a stir in the build-up to this match. But Stevie G isn't concerned. Why? Because the England fans will be louder...

If our fans match the noise levels from Montenegro, we'll take that.

The atmosphere was really good. They showed great patience, after 30 minutes at 0-0 or at half-time, but they stayed with us.

When we got the breakthrough the roof came off. We are hoping for more of the same. 70,000 to 20,000, I would take that all day.

  • It's the question that everyone will ask themselves at some stage in their life. Can Stevie G and Franky Lampard play together? Kevin Garside says it's time to bring the tandem act to an end...

The players he trusts most in the heart of the pitch are those whose potential has been exhausted. We know how matters end when Stevie G and Lamps share space in major tournaments.

Subs: Boruc, Wasilewski, Jodlowiec, Polanski, Zielinski, Klich, Wawrzyniak, Peszko, Sobiech, Rzezniczak, Fabianski.
    10/15/2013 6:39:00 PM
  • Just been taking a stroll along Wembley Way - certainly noticeable the number of Poland supporters amongst the crowd heading to the ground. All very jovial.
    10/15/2013 6:40:06 PM
  • I didn't see this on the way in! Wish I had... Love flares - reminds me of watching Italian football as a kid.

    10/15/2013 6:42:05 PM
  • Just 10 minutes to kick-off now. Poland fans making a load of noise. England fans responding as best they can. National anthems should be interesting...
    10/15/2013 6:51:19 PM
  • So lets see how optimistic you lot are. We've been asking how you think England will do if they make it to Brazil. Rather predictably - quarter-finals come out on top with 47 per cent of the vote. 11 per cent of you think we'll win it though. I didn't think there were any of you out there!
    10/15/2013 6:53:49 PM
  • Teams on their way out. Those on the decks at Wembley are playing some pretty ominous music - that's not gonna help!
    10/15/2013 6:54:45 PM
  • I told you the anthems could get tasty. As well as the predictable boos, a load of flares went off in the Poland section - with one coming onto the pitch. You know how I feel about flares though...
    10/15/2013 6:58:27 PM
  • 1 min: With the smoke clearing from those flares, we're off...
    10/15/2013 7:00:22 PM
  • 2 min: Carrick seeing a bit of the ball early on - and mis-controlling it out of play.
    10/15/2013 7:02:13 PM
  • 4 min: Townsend the latest to let the ball run out of play accidentally. England yet to settle here and it's no surprise. You'd be forgiven for thinking we were in Poland right now - their fans are certainly outdoing the home support.
    10/15/2013 7:04:27 PM
  • 7 min: England finally getting into this, first Gerrard linking up well with Rooney before Welbeck is stopped at the last moment before having a crack at goal. Lewandowski then has his first proper touch of the ball. He can't do anything with it though.
    10/15/2013 7:07:20 PM
  • 9 min: The ball is worked out to Baines whose cross takes a deflection before the defender clears the ball just wide of the post. Closest yet for England. But Poland show their threat on the break with Lewandowski allowed to run the length of the pitch before unleashing a weak shot from range.
    10/15/2013 7:09:57 PM
  • 11 min: Close again from England. Townsend with a cute turn on the edge of the box which Welbeck follows up with a Terry-esque low header. He can't get the rebound on target though.
    10/15/2013 7:10:45 PM
  • 10/15/2013 7:12:46 PM
  • 14 min: Rooney and Welbeck look to link-up on the edge of the box but it breaks down. Poland already looking much more of a threat than Montenegro were on Friday night. They've got nothing to play for - and it shows. Playing with real freedom.
    10/15/2013 7:14:33 PM
  • 16 min: Poland go close with Sobota hitting the side netting after finding space inside the box. The Polish fans thought that was in for a second.
    10/15/2013 7:15:54 PM
  • 17 min: Baines wins a free-kick down by the byline. Good opportunity for the Everton man to put it in. But it's easily cleared away.
    10/15/2013 7:17:17 PM
  • 20 min: Smalling gives away a free-kick by the corner flag. Decent chance to put in a decent ball but that was worse than the Baines effort a moment ago. Ukraine are already 2-0 up against San Marino. As expected - England look like they'll need the win tonight.
    10/15/2013 7:19:58 PM
  • 22 min - CLOSE!: Poland going in strong with their tackles and they've taken Welbeck out to give Gerrard a chance to whip in a free-kick. He puts that right foot round it, it just needs a touch! But no one can get there and it goes agonisingly past the post.
    10/15/2013 7:21:51 PM
  • Poland fans enjoying themselves...

    10/15/2013 7:21:59 PM
  • 24 min - CLOSE!:Poland should have been ahead there. A fantastic break that finds its way to Lewandowski. But the Dortmund striker's heavy touch takes it away from him and he can only prod wide. Really should have scored.
    10/15/2013 7:23:44 PM
  • 26 min: Terrible by Welbeck. For the first time in the match Townsend gets a run on the defender. He pulls it back perfectly for the United striker but after messing about, ends up taking an air kick. Awful. Ukraine now 3-0 up.
    10/15/2013 7:25:58 PM
  • 28 min - OFF THE BAR: Great play again by Townsend who finds a little space on the edge 0f the box and curls it towards the top corner. With the keeper beat it crashes off the bar though. Sturridge then unleashes a close range shot but Szczesny keeps it out. This game has come alive...
    10/15/2013 7:28:17 PM
  • Bit of Townsend loving going on...

    10/15/2013 7:29:23 PM
  • 10/15/2013 7:30:25 PM
  • 32 min: England nearly get there. Some great work around the edge of the box eventually ends up with Baines working his way into the box. He tries to play it across the six yard box but it's cut out. Welbeck then nearly prods it in from the resulting corner. So close.
    10/15/2013 7:32:15 PM
  • 33 min: Baines wins another free-kick for England in a dangerous position (he's having a fine night again so far). Gerrard with the free-kick... it's cut out though.
    10/15/2013 7:33:29 PM
  • 36 min: Why are all the best chances falling to Welbeck! The United striker is put in on goal thanks to a fabulous first time pass from Gerrard but he takes a poor touch and Szczesny saves. Rooney then troubles the Poland keeper from just outside the box.
    10/15/2013 7:36:30 PM
  • 38 min: Again! Why is it at Welbeck's feet! His shot is deflected wide when perhaps he should have got it away sooner.
    10/15/2013 7:37:42 PM
  • 10/15/2013 7:38:06 PM
  • 39 min: Townsend, who's looking more confident with each minute, gets Sturridge in but the Liverpool striker can't quite bundle his way through the box.
    10/15/2013 7:39:03 PM
  • 41 min - GOAL!: Patient play by England pays off with a quick first time pass from Carrick finding Baines on the wing. His cross is perfect - and with Welbeck and Rooney waiting - thankfully it was the latter who took command and nodded it down into the bottom corner. 1-0 to England.
