England v New Zealand 2nd Test - LIVE!

Swann bowls Brownlie in his first over
by Charles Reynoldson May 26, 2013 at 1:39 PM

  • If Yorkshire are strong, runs the old maxim, England are strong. The county are renascent this season and yesterday at their historic old ground, the second Test against New Zealand was illuminated by two of their new sons.

    5/26/2013 9:55:18 AM

  • Root's anger at losing his wicket shortly after reaching his hundred will be assuaged by the excitement of the battles with Australia to come. The future is, however, far less certain for Nick Compton and Jonny Bairstow

  • Players and umpires out on the pitch now...
    5/26/2013 10:00:06 AM
  • England 343/7 (Prior 39, Swann 22)
Trent Boult opening up and England immediately are up and running, picking up a boundary to a wayward delivery down leg side which Prior gets a little glove on.
    5/26/2013 10:05:05 AM
  • WICKET! Prior c Taylor b Southee - 39
That's the breakthrough New Zealand wanted. The dangerman Prior goes, flashing outside off stump and edging to Ross Taylor at first slip.
    5/26/2013 10:09:01 AM
  • England 346/8 (Swann 24, Finn 2)
Tight stuff from Boult to Swann, but the spinner pinches the strike with a last-ball single to ruin his maiden.

    5/26/2013 10:15:40 AM
  • England 348/8 (Swann 26, Finn 0)
Swann doing well to keep hold of the strike and he survives an LBW shout at the end of the over, although to be honest nobody was that interested. Hawkeye however shows it would have hit the top of leg stump.
    5/26/2013 10:21:00 AM
  • WICKET! Finn b Boult - 4
Finn viciously clubbed a drive down the ground for four from the first ball of the over and tried to repeat the shot from Boult's next delivery but it was full and swinging and sent Finn's stumps sprawling.

  • Enter the Burnley Lara
    5/26/2013 10:23:39 AM
  • WICKET! Anderson c and b Boult - 0
Anderson doesn't last long, he get's a leading edge and Boult takes a smart return catch to end the innings and complete his five-wicket haul. He's bowled well again this match.

  • The Independent's Stephen Brenkley at Headingley:

    5/26/2013 10:30:47 AM
  • New Zealand 2/0 (Fulton 1, Rutherford 1)
Early chance for England, Rutherford getting a thick edge to a Broad delivery but Bell can't quite get to it in the gully.

  • The spectacular end of Steven Finn
by Charles Reynoldson May 26, 2013 at 10:46 AM

    5/26/2013 10:46:46 AM
  • New Zealand 7/0 (Fulton 2, Rutherford 5)
Rutherford picks up a four but it's a moral victory to Anderson, as it's a thick inside edge that squirts down to fine leg.
    5/26/2013 10:50:19 AM
  • New Zealand 13/0 (Fulton 8, Rutherford 5)
You can't bowl there to Two Metre Peter. Broad strays onto his pads and New Zealand's taller opener swats him away for four. Broad's line is much better for the rest of the over.
    5/26/2013 10:52:07 AM
  • New Zealand 14/0 (Fulton 8, Rutherford 6)
Some real swing for Anderson here and this is a great contest between bat and ball. Meanwhile in the commentary box Ian Botham and Ian Smith are joking about which one of them is fatter - another close contest.
    5/26/2013 10:57:11 AM
  • New Zealand 15/0 (Fulton 8, Rutherford 7)
Just a single from the over and England haven't quite got their bowling right here - then again compared to that final morning at Lord's anything would be a bit disappointing.
    5/26/2013 11:02:06 AM
  • New Zealand 15/0 (Fulton 8, Rutherford 7)
Better from Anderson, he bowls out a maiden to Rutherford.
    5/26/2013 11:04:32 AM
  • If you're anywhere nearby then get down to Headingley, it's a glorious day:

    5/26/2013 11:07:04 AM
  • New Zealand 19/0 (Fulton 12, Rutherford 7)
Fulton punches Broad down the ground for four but England's blonde bomber recovers and raps him on the pads twice in succession late in the over but only producing strangled appeals.
    5/26/2013 11:10:05 AM
  • New Zealand 27/0 (Fulton 12, Rutherford 15)
Cracking drive down the ground for four from Rutherford and he picks up another boundary two balls later with another great shot, cutting the ball away on the off side. Anderson not getting much swing and he tries getting the ball replaced but the umpire is having none of it.
    5/26/2013 11:14:06 AM

  • The end of Matt Prior this morning
by Charles Reynoldson May 26, 2013 at 11:15 AM

    5/26/2013 11:15:23 AM
  • New Zealand 34/0 (Fulton 19, Rutherford 15)
Finn into the attack but he can't stop the flow of runs, Fulton using his long arms to reach for one outside off stump and drive it to the fence for four. He picks up three more when Finn drifts onto his pads.
    5/26/2013 11:18:33 AM
  • Well amazingly England's whinging about the ball has worked, it is slightly out of shape and will now be replaced...
    5/26/2013 11:21:01 AM
  • New Zealand 41/0 (Fulton 19, Rutherford 21)
England might have changed the ball but they've leaked a lot of runs this over, the highlight being Rutherford's rasping drive off the back foot which races away through the covers.
    5/26/2013 11:25:16 AM
  • New Zealand 49/0 (Fulton 23, Rutherford 23)
Finn drifts onto Fulton's pads and predictably he whips it away for four. Not very clever bowling considering how strong he is through that area.

    5/26/2013 11:29:37 AM
  • New Zealand 55/0 (Fulton 28, Rutherford 24)
Anderson continues for the time being but still without any luck. He nearly gets Fulton, chopping onto his own stumps, but the ball just misses the stumps and runs away for four. New Zealand bring up the 50 partnership.
    5/26/2013 11:35:51 AM
  • WICKET! Fulton c and b Finn - 28
That's a fairly ignominious end for Fulton. He tries his favourite shot, the clip through the leg side, but gets a leading edge and the ball just loops up for Finn to take an easy return catch. Breakthrough for England.
    5/26/2013 11:36:17 AM
  • New Zealand 55/1 (Rutherford 24, Williamson 0)
Finn strikes for England and that's a wicket maiden. Just what the hosts needed before lunch.
    5/26/2013 11:42:37 AM
  • New Zealand 56/1 (Rutherford 25, Williamson 0)
Broad back into the attack to replace Anderson and he concedes just a single. England looking slightly restored by their wicket.
    5/26/2013 11:45:54 AM
  • The Independent's Stephen Brenkley at Headingley:

    5/26/2013 11:47:12 AM
  • New Zealand 57/1 (Rutherford 26, Williamson 0)
Lovely stuff from Finn to Rutherford fourth ball of the over, it bounces and moves away but misses the edge of the bat.
    5/26/2013 11:50:01 AM
  • WICKET! Rutherford c Bell b Finn - 27
Finn's got another one! Rutherford slices a wide one straight to Ian Bell in the gully, just what England would have wanted before lunch.
    5/26/2013 11:58:12 AM
  • LUNCH: New Zealand 62/2 (Williamson 4, Taylor 0)
Perfect way for England to go into lunch, Finn picks up his second and Ross Taylor does well to see off the one ball he has to face before the break.

  • Read a report of the play so far today here
    5/26/2013 12:33:45 PM
  • New Zealand 67/2 (Williamson 7, Taylor 2)
Finn has looked good so far today, he takes a tumble in his follow through one delivery but then squares Taylor up the next. Taylor however showing good positive intent in running some quick singles.

    5/26/2013 12:50:49 PM
  • New Zealand 68/2 (Williamson 7, Taylor 2)
Just a leg bye from the over so Broad picks up a maiden. Better stuff from Broad.

    5/26/2013 12:56:00 PM
  • WICKET! Taylor b Finn - 6
Finn strikes again! He cramps Taylor for room and he can only drag it back onto his own stumps. Big wicket for England and they are very much on top.
    5/26/2013 12:57:41 PM
  • New Zealand 72/3 (Williamson 7, Brownlie 0)
Pleasing stuff from Finn who looked out of sorts at Lord's but now has all three wickets for England today. Home side very much dominating proceedings at the moment.

    5/26/2013 1:02:45 PM
  • New Zealand 72/3 (Williamson 7, Brownlie 0)
Consecutive maidens from Broad and Finn and they are really ratcheting up the pressure on New Zealand here. Good aggressive stuff from Finn in particular.

    Finn gets Rutherford before lunch
by Charles Reynoldson May 26, 2013 at 1:12 PM

    5/26/2013 1:13:06 PM
  • New Zealand 76/3 (Williamson 8, Brownlie 2)
Just two from the over, Finn bowling the best I've seen all season and it looks like we might be getting a bit of Graeme Swann now.
    5/26/2013 1:19:28 PM
  • WICKET! Brownlie b Swann - 2
Wicket for Swann in his first over! He bowls a beauty to Brownlie, pitching it in the footholes and getting enough spin back to clean up the right-hander.
    5/26/2013 1:21:34 PM
  • New Zealand 79/4 (Williamson 8, Guptill 0)
Swann does indeed come into the attack and it's a great first over, he clears out Brownlie and New Zealand are in real trouble now.
    5/26/2013 1:23:49 PM
  • New Zealand 80/4 (Williamson 8, Guptill 1)
New man in Martin Guptill is normally opener so is batting in a new position here. He also only has two toes on his left foot, although this is not a new development
