  • NOT OUT - Phew! For a horrible moment it looked like Root was going to be out but Hotspot reveals the noise was the ball glancing the pad on the way through. Root lives to fight on...
    5/25/2013 4:25:58 PM
  • England 243/4 (Root 93, Bairstow 46)
Feeling a bit sick after that scare for Root but he will bat on. Bairstow meanwhile is approaching an excellent half-century.
    5/25/2013 4:28:22 PM
  • 50 for Bairstow (73 balls, 7 fours) - Good innings from the youngster on his home turf and he is looking more and more assured here.
    5/25/2013 4:29:36 PM
  • DRINKS: England 248/4 (Root 93, Bairstow 51)
The young Yorkies bring up their 100 partnership in the same over that Bairstow brings up his half-century and this has been a very important stand from these two. On this evidence, England's future looks very bright.

  • Joe Root plays a reverse sweep

  • 5/25/2013 4:37:48 PM
  • England 250/4 (Root 93, Bairstow 54)
England bring up the 250 after the break before Bracewell has a big LBW shout against Bairstow but the umpire says not out and it's a good decision. Hawkeye shows it just would have clipped leg stump but by about the smallest margin possible.
    5/25/2013 4:40:17 PM
  • England 255/4 (Root 93, Bairstow 58)
Bairstow picks up four more with a firm clip of his pads through the mid on/midwicket area.
    5/25/2013 4:44:03 PM
  • 100 for Joe Root! He plays the ball through the slips for four to become the first Yorkshireman to make his maiden Test hundred at Headingley.
    5/25/2013 4:47:05 PM
  • England 264/4 (Root 101, Bairstow 59)
Slight misfield allows Root to move to 94, will he bring up three figures with a 6 a la KP? No, Bairstow gets a single to get Root back on strike and then Root adds a couple more before playing one with soft hands through the slips for four to bring up his century. This has been a fantastic knock from Root and the crowd are serenading him to the tune of Hey Jude.
    5/25/2013 4:51:01 PM
  • England 266/4 (Root 101, Bairstow 60)
Slight scare for Bairstow as he plays one into the leg side which loops up rather and hangs tantalisingly in the air before dropping just short of the fielder. One over to go until the new ball is due.
    5/25/2013 4:54:30 PM

  • England 266/4 (Root 101, Bairstow 60)
Good running from this pair, they pick up four singles from Williamson's over to take their partnership past 124.
    5/25/2013 4:58:21 PM
  • WICKET! Root c McCullum b Boult - 104
Boult strikes with the first delivery with the new ball, Root playing at one outside off and nicking through to the keeper. A loose shot to end an excellent innings.
    5/25/2013 4:59:25 PM
  • England 273/5 (Bairstow 64, Prior 1)
New Zealand strike straight away with the new cherry and it's the centurion Root who departs. Matt Prior comes in and gets off the mark to ironic cheers following his pair at Lord's. For all that England have batted well this afternoon, a couple of late wickets here for New Zealand would get them right back into the match.

    5/25/2013 5:10:02 PM
  • WICKET! Bairstow c McCullum b Boult - 64
Disappointment for Bairstow as he also nicks one through to the keeper and he won't be joining his fellow Yorkshireman Root in bringing up three figures. A good knock nonetheless.
    5/25/2013 5:10:50 PM
  • England 286/6 (Prior 12, Broad 0)
Southee beats the bat two balls in a row as Prior plays and misses but the batsman picks up a four off the last ball of the over, flicking it fine down the leg side for a boundary.
    5/25/2013 5:18:19 PM
  • WICKET! Broad c McCullum b Boult - 0
Broad nicks one outside off stump and it's another catch from McCullum, another wicket for Boult and the left-armer has picked up three quick ones with the new ball. New Zealand right back in this.
    5/25/2013 5:18:47 PM
  • England 291/7 (Prior 16, Swann 1)
Great shot from Matt Prior brings up another four, he stands on the back foot and punches one down the ground. England would love one of his cameos here to build on the good work done by their young Yorkshire duo.
    5/25/2013 5:24:38 PM
  • England 293/7 (Prior 16, Swann 3)
England edge towards 300 with a couple more from Swann, but just like in both innings at Lord's they have collapsed somewhat after the dismissal of Joe Root.
    5/25/2013 5:28:47 PM
  • England 297/7 (Prior 20, Swann 3)
Trent Boult has bowled very well today, but that's a fairly tired attempt at a bouncer and Prior swats it away to the boundary disdainfully like he would a drowsy fly with a rolled up newspaper.
    5/25/2013 5:35:11 PM
  • DROPPED CATCH! Prior clips one off his legs and it's in the air but put down by a diving Bracewell at midwicket.
    5/25/2013 5:36:37 PM
  • England 301/7 (Prior 21, Swann 5)
300 up for England and it's been a long day in the field for New Zealand. McCullum takes one acrobatically down the leg side but he's moving fairly gingerly afterwards. It's clear why he doesn't keep in Test matches any more,  this day behind the stumps has taken it's toll on him.
    5/25/2013 5:38:32 PM
  • England 320/7 (Prior 31, Swann 14)
This is some good stuff from Prior and Swann who are adding some important lower order runs here for England against a tired-looking New Zealand attack. Swann picks up four off the last ball of the over with a good looking drive through the off side. Partnership 34 of 41 balls.

  • Joe Root departs after an excellent knock of 104
by Charles Reynoldson May 25, 2013 at 5:51 PM

    5/25/2013 5:52:13 PM
  • England 324/7 (Prior 32, Swann 14)
Southee targets Swann with a couple of short balls, hitting the spinner twice but he survives as England add a couple more to the total.
    5/25/2013 5:54:30 PM
  • England 332/7 (Prior 33, Swann 21)
More useful runs for England as play approaches the close and this is what Matt Prior does best. Good to see him bouncing back after his pair at Lord's. Swann picks up four from the last ball of the over and Doug Bracewell is down, New Zealand will be hoping this is just cramp not an injury.
    5/25/2013 6:02:02 PM
  • CLOSE: England 337/7 (Prior 38, Swann 21)
Prior picks up four from the first ball of the over to bring up the 50 partnership between these two and Bracewell limps off to be replaced by substitute Tommy Latham. Prior sees off the rest of the over and that's stumps on Day 2. What an excellent day's play it's been.
    5/25/2013 6:06:51 PM
  • That's it for today, please join us again tomorrow for Day Three which looks like being a cracker.
