  • The biggest story this afternoon is that Tottenham midfielder Andros Townsend is expected to make his first start for England. It will mean no place for Jack Wilshere in the starting XI.

Now back at Tottenham, Townsend has been a regular in the side, despite numerous summer buys at White Hart Lane. He scored in the 5-0 Europa League qualifier against Dinamo Tbilisi and was particularly impressive in the recent match against Chelsea.

  • We haven't heard much from the Montenegro coach ahead of the game. Last time the sides played he was labelling England a long ball team. What's been going on?

I don't want to talk about any English players. I will concentrate on my team.

  • This is a sight England fans would like to see tonight...

  • Daniel Sturridge has always been super-confident in his own ability and is showing it at Liverpool. But can he cut it in England's hour of need, asks Sam Wallace...

The Sturridge conundrum has existed ever since he emerged in the youth teams at Manchester City around 10 years ago, then just the latest player to roll off that club's impressive production line.

  • When these sides last met, they drew 1-1. Rooney scored the opening goal for England before it was cancelled out by Dejan Damjanovic with 15 minutes to go. Watch the highlights here.

  • Roy Hodgson admits the responsibility of guiding England to the 2014 World Cup weighs heavily - but is not looking for excuses...

I would be saddened to think my time as national coach has been riddled with excuses. We've taken responsibility all along. We're not looking for excuses. We're looking to play the game.

  • It's a horrible night here at Wembley. Wet and windy! You can understand why England are so desperate to qualify. The sun and beaches in Brazil are looking a little more appealing this evening.
    10/11/2013 6:34:19 PM
  • There's a video of Roy Hodgson playing on the big screens here at Wembley. Haven't got a clue what he's saying due to the echo in here. But here's something for you.  If results go the right way, Hodgson will become the first Englishman to lead England to a major tournament in 14 years. The last time it happened was under Kevin Keegan.
    10/11/2013 6:37:48 PM
  • 15 minutes to kick-off here. Excitement and crowd building. Things could get a bit feisty out there this evening. Montenegro have received four red cards during the qualification campaign. And we all know Wayne Rooney has a bit of history when it comes to this fixture...
    10/11/2013 6:47:18 PM
  • In case you needed reminding...

    10/11/2013 6:47:47 PM
  • It's half-time in tonight's other crucial Group H game between Ukraine and Poland. There are a lot of permutations - but basically - Ukraine not doing so well is good news. It's going England's way so far with the match 0-0.
    10/11/2013 6:51:28 PM
  • So how's that poll going I hear you asking? Well, 40 per cent of you currently think Hodgson will use a brolly in this rain and risk the 'wally' abuse that could come his way. Surely he wouldn't would he?
    10/11/2013 6:53:23 PM
  • Right, we've had the national anthems so we're just about ready here. As the anthems were played, Montenegro's players turned around from the usual direction in a sort of 'Poznan' move. Mind games? It had me confused...
    10/11/2013 6:58:56 PM
  • 1 min: The match has kicked off...
    10/11/2013 7:00:16 PM
  • 10/11/2013 7:01:04 PM
  • 3 mins: Baines very advanced early on - guess England have to go for it but could leave England exposed at the back... Welbeck urged to shoot from range - he does but it's well over.
    10/11/2013 7:02:42 PM
  • 5 mins: Townsend shows why he's brought into the side with a strong run at the defence before slipping Welbeck in. England win a corner which nearly falls to Lampard, but not quite.
    10/11/2013 7:04:18 PM
  • 8 mins: Entertaining start this. England really looking to attack at any opportunity with the bulk of it going through Townsend. Nippy performance so far. It has Montenegro manager Brnovic concerned - he was literally jumping up and down a moment ago.
    10/11/2013 7:08:03 PM
  • 9 mins: Rooney shoots from range, it's deflected, Wembley holds its breath, it's wide.
    10/11/2013 7:08:48 PM
  • 12 mins: The ball falls to Sturridge just inside the box. Urged to shoot, he tries to curl it into the top corner but puts too much on it. Didn't quite have the room for that one but more promising signs. Montenegro getting everyone back. #redbus
    10/11/2013 7:11:38 PM
  • 10/11/2013 7:11:49 PM
  • 15 mins: Shocking pass by Lampard gives Montenegro a chance to break. They fail to move it quickly enough and the move ends with Jovetic shooting from range. Awful attempt that.
    10/11/2013 7:14:47 PM
  • 16 mins: Calls for a penalty with Sturridge appearing to be pushed as Gerrard's free-kick floats across the box. Would have been soft.
    10/11/2013 7:15:59 PM
  • 20 mins: Montenegro look to work a rare attack but Baines does well to nick the ball back. England then attack with real flare but Rooney's cross finds no-one. Eventually it comes out to the edge of the box, Lampard tees it up for Gerrard and for a second it looks like it has 'goal' all over it. The Liverpool captain shapes to hit it with his right foot, gets around the ball, but can't get it between the sticks. Decent chance by Stevie G's standards.
    10/11/2013 7:20:18 PM
  • 23 mins: Brilliant by Baines. First he cuts inside and causes havoc with a cross. He gets it back and makes it to the byline before tumbling to shouts of 'penalty'. The ref doesn't give it with Welbeck seeing his shot saved at the front post.
    10/11/2013 7:23:43 PM
  • 24 mins: Montenegro went swiftly down the other end and Hart was forced to come out and clear. A good shot from range would have beaten him, but it floated over, much to the City keeper's relief.
    10/11/2013 7:24:57 PM
  • 26 mins: Shot from Sturridge. First he dummies it but then the Liverpool striker has a crack. It's over though.
    10/11/2013 7:26:12 PM
  • Elsewhere tonight, Ukraine have gone 1-0 up against Poland. In short - that's bad for England.
    10/11/2013 7:27:10 PM
  • 10/11/2013 7:27:34 PM
  • 30 mins - CHANCE!: Montenegro make a right mess of it there with a long ball causing confusion with Rooney lurking. It leads to a corner which is played to Baines who puts it in. Sturridge meets it with his head but it goes just wide. Best chance of the match.
    10/11/2013 7:30:09 PM
  • 32 mins: Foul by Cahill on Jovetic gives the visitors a chance to stick it in the box. What a waste of it though with the flag going straight up for offside.
    10/11/2013 7:31:56 PM
  • 34 mins: Fine work again by Baines who works it to Gerrard on the edge of the box. He wraps that right foot around it again and this time it's on target. Well saved by Poleksic though who than catches the resultant corner.
    10/11/2013 7:33:51 PM
  • 37 mins: Shocker of a touch from the man with the headband. Baines puts in a decent ball but it cannons off Rooney's shin. A couple of corners follow but nothing comes of them... again.
    10/11/2013 7:36:21 PM
  • 39 mins: Greg Dyke pictured on the TV cameras here in the press box, having a peruse of the matchday programme by the looks of it. To be fair to him, the energy has gone out of this match a little. Montenegro frustrating England and forcing them to take shots from range, of which Gerrard has just had another.
    10/11/2013 7:39:03 PM
  • 42 mins - CHANCE!: Best move of the night. Rooney turns the ball around on the half-way line to the on-rushing Townsend. The Spurs winger charges at goal and shoots from just outside the box. The keeper saves but it falls to Rooney. It's an incredibly tight angle and for a second the United's forward's lashed shot looks in, but it hits the side netting.
    10/11/2013 7:41:20 PM
  • 44 mins - CLOSE!: Sturridge runs across the box. And just keeps going and going. He then plays a lovely back heel to Welbeck who's shot is deflected. The keeper is stranded but the ball goes agonisingly wide.
    10/11/2013 7:44:53 PM
  • HT: England work it to the byline and the pull back comes to Sturridge who tries a cheeky flick. It nearly works, but not quite. The home side are getting so close - but the whistle goes and it remains 0-0.
    10/11/2013 7:46:34 PM
  • HT: Decent half from England, although mostly limited to shots from range. Montenegro look like they've come for the draw. Ukraine are still winning 1-0 against Poland which will remind England how much they need to break the deadlock here.
