England 0 Germany 1 - as it happened

Mertesacker celebrates the only goal of the game...

  • 66 min: Perhaps we can't put the 'dodgy keeper' tag to bed just yet. Hart comes out of his box and clatters Smalling. He gets away with that one, just, with the ball running safe. The City stopper does make up for it a little just after with a fine stop from Gotze's low shot. Wilshere is on for Cleverley and Hummels is off for Howedes.

  • 70 min: Nearly a great start for Sam who has only recently come on, but he can only lob it over the bar with Hart storming out and making himself big. Sturridge very nearly in at the other end. Westermann is off for Draxler.

  • 71 min: Sturridge tries to turn in the box and nearly gets away from his defender. He then turns provider but Smalling is penalised as he tries to climb in the box. Rooney off for Barkley.

  • Townsend shoots but hits the post...

    11/19/2013 9:28:13 PM
  • 74 min: A bit of dodgy keeping at the other end as Weidenfeller gets his clearance all wrong. Germany get away with it however.
    11/19/2013 9:30:26 PM
  • 77 min: Lallana is off for his Southampton colleague Rickie Lambert. Another decent showing from the midfielder making way.
    11/19/2013 9:33:56 PM
  • 80 min: A strong run from Walker leads to an England corner. Can Barkley have more success than Gerrard from his set-peice? No. It doesn't even beat the first man.
    11/19/2013 9:36:40 PM
  • 81 min - CLOSE: A better delivery from the Everton youngster that time as he finds Smalling at the back post. It takes deflection from Draxler to keep it out.
    11/19/2013 9:38:08 PM
  • 84 min: Henderson with a great ball for Wilshere but the Arsenal midfielder is quickly closed down. Difficult to see another goal in this match. The crowd has gone flat and so has the game. But then again, this is England v Germany - we shouldn't be ruling out late drama just yet. Schurrle is on for Reus.
    11/19/2013 9:41:11 PM
  • Perhaps he's thinking - England haven't lost successive home games for 36 years.

    11/19/2013 9:42:45 PM
  • 87 min: Barkley looks like he's about to head it on goal from Townsend's cross... that is until Lars Bender comes storming in.
    11/19/2013 9:44:06 PM
  • 90 min: Sam has a rasping shot from range but it goes wide. England are quick up the other end and it comes to Barkley on the edge of the box. SHOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTT the crowd scream - but he misses his opening.
    11/19/2013 9:47:19 PM
  • Mertesacker celebrates his goal...

    11/19/2013 9:47:27 PM
  • 90 + 2 min: Germany in possession and slowing the game sown. The stands are emptying out - it would seem they think it's all over.
    11/19/2013 9:48:46 PM
  • 90 + 3 min: Barkley again urged to shoot but he's tacked before he can.
    11/19/2013 9:49:29 PM
  • 90 + 3 min: Townsend can shoot. But not necessarily on target. Well wide from the Spurs man.
    11/19/2013 9:50:08 PM
  • FT: That's it. Germany win 1-0.
    11/19/2013 9:51:33 PM
  • FT: So a disappointing end to the year for England. Germany were solid if unspectacular and to be fair to Hodgson's side, they were perhaps unlucky to lose on the balance of play. Townsend came closest for the home side when he hit the post but that was perhaps the most exciting moment on a cold night for England.
    11/19/2013 9:54:41 PM
  • FT: That's it from me - thanks for joining. Good night.
