England v Brazil - latest from Wembley

Minute-by-minute text commentary of England's friendly match against Brazil

  • Welcome to The Independent's live coverage of England v Brazil, live, right here from Wembley.
While this is a friendly match, it's so much more than that with a heap of subplots to keep us entertained.

Ashley Cole will be making his 100th England appearance tonight, after Roy Hodgson revealed yesterday that the Chelsea left-back would be starting the game.

There will be a special presentation for him, along with Steven Gerrard who picked up his 100th cap in England's last match, away against Sweden.

England fans will perhaps be more interested in watching how the captain combines with Jack Wilshere in midfield. The duo start together for the first time in a pairing that has only seen them play for England at the same time for a total of 13 minutes.

In the away dug-out is Luiz Felipe Scolari, who, if history had taken a different course, could have been sitting in Roy Hodgson's seat. The World Cup winning manager turned the England job down in 2006. It's a decision that still "hurts" apparently.

We get a chance to have a closer look at the hosts of, and one of the favourites for, the 2014 World Cup. On show will be a bunch of players that only need one name to identify themselves - Neymar, Ronaldinho, Oscar, Moura...

  • Let's take a look at how the two teams line up...
    2/6/2013 7:13:12 PM
  • England: Hart; Johnson, Cole, Cahill, Smalling, Gerrard, Walcott, Wilshere, Cleverley,Rooney, Welbeck
    2/6/2013 7:13:49 PM
  • The full Brazil team isn't available yet by I can tell you Ronaldinho starts. As well as Neymar.
    2/6/2013 7:14:50 PM
  • So it would appear Roy Hodgson has not gone for Walcott up front, instead playing Welbeck alongside Rooney. Cole makes his 100th appearance as expected.
    2/6/2013 7:16:27 PM
  • Ahead of the match, there will be a special presentation for Ashley Cole who is making his 100th England appearance tonight. The left-back has been a divisive figure over the years and in an interview yesterday made clear his only interest is the football, not winning the love of the fans. You can read more about it here. As his name was read out tonight there was still a few audible boos. Not many though.
    2/6/2013 7:17:21 PM
  • Cole will join Steven Gerrard among the seven players to reach 100 caps for England. Where Cole differs from the other outfield players amongst that group is that he has never scored an international goal. In fact, if he fails to find the back of the net tonight he will become just the second outfield player in history to represent a team in the world's top 20 to reach 100 appearances and not score. Find out who the other one was here.

  • They teams are out...
    2/6/2013 7:22:07 PM
  • In midfield, Jack Wilshere makes a welcome return to the starting line-up. There is huge expectation around the Arsenal midfielder, which have only increased thanks to Steven Gerrard's assertion that the prospects for the 22-year-old are "frightening". You can read more about that, and how Wilshere is the natural heir to Gerrard's throne here.
    2/6/2013 7:22:28 PM
  • Here are the line-ups in full...
England: Hart, Johnson, Cahill, Smalling, Cole, Cleverley,
Gerrard, Wilshere, Walcott, Rooney, Welbeck
Subs: Walker, Butland, Baines, Jagielka, Lescott, Milner, Lampard, Osman, Lennon, Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Brazil: Julio Cesar, Dani Alves, Luiz, Dante, Adriano, Paulinho, Ramires, Ronaldinho, Neymar, Luis Fabiano, Oscar.

  • Now what about England's opponents... They don't need much of introduction, but with England not having played them since 2009 - you might need a refresher on who to look out for tonight. Here's The Independent's selection of the players to watch.
    2/6/2013 7:24:53 PM
  • Ronaldino has been presented with a special shirt as he is making his 100th appearance for Brazil. Gerrard and Cole are now being recognised as well.
    2/6/2013 7:25:48 PM
  • Huge cheer for Gerrard.
    2/6/2013 7:26:01 PM
  • 2/6/2013 7:28:51 PM
  • We've had the national anthems and we're about to get underway here at Wembley...
    2/6/2013 7:29:43 PM
  • 1 min: The match is underway...
    2/6/2013 7:33:48 PM
  • 2 min: Joe Hart shows Ronaldinho a few skills. The England keeper dummies it past the Brazilian after a pass back. The crowd enjoyed that one.
    2/6/2013 7:35:24 PM
  • 3 min: Luiz is forced to head it out for a corner but Gerrard over hits it to Rooney.
    2/6/2013 7:36:17 PM
  • 5 min: Another corner to England - Gerrard whips it in with his right foot towards Rooney. It finds him this time but the United striker can't do much with it.
    2/6/2013 7:37:57 PM
  • 6 min: Neymar gets involved for the first time and is given a lesson in how we do things over here. Cahill clatters him with a strong challenge and puts it out for a Brazil corner. It comes to nothing.
    2/6/2013 7:39:24 PM
  • 7 min: Neymar is in on goal! He beats the offside trap but can't get it out of his feet quick enough and Cahill gets back to muscle him off it. Dangerous.
    2/6/2013 7:40:40 PM
  • 9 min: Wilshere does well in midfield but Welbeck then gives it away. Lively start this.
    2/6/2013 7:42:39 PM
  • 11 min: So close for England - Gerrard crosses it in from a corner and this time really does find Rooney. But his header into the ground bounces over the bar. Should have done better.
    2/6/2013 7:44:23 PM
  • 13 min: Decent shot from Oscar. Neymar runs from inside his own half at Cahill before laying it off to his right to Oscar. He takes a touch, hits it, but it's over the bar.
    2/6/2013 7:46:00 PM
  • 15 min: A bit of fun in the press box. The management at Wembley have put on our monitors what appears to be a tv show about some woman with health problems. Not sure how that's going to help our coverage!
    2/6/2013 7:48:09 PM
  • 16 min: Some nice stuff from England before Walcott fails to control Gerrards cross-field pass. Adriano nearly gets away before a strong tackle from Wilshere.
    2/6/2013 7:49:39 PM
  • 18 min: PENALTY TO BRAZIL!
    2/6/2013 7:51:31 PM
  • 18 min: SAVED!
    2/6/2013 7:52:14 PM
  • 20 min: Ronaldinho steps up, plays it into the bottom right but Hart makes an amazing stop. The England keeper than keeps out Ronaldinho's follow up before Neymar makes a complete hash of it when it pings out again. It remains 0-0.
    2/6/2013 7:53:24 PM
  • 21 min: The ref gave the penalty for a handball by Wilshere by the way. It looked harsh - more ball to hand than anything.
    2/6/2013 7:54:05 PM
  • 22 min: Wasn't there some talk recently about Hart's form not being what it was? Saving a penalty from Ronaldinho will certainly silence the doubters.
    2/6/2013 7:55:00 PM
  • 23 min: Great chance for Welbeck. Wilshere plays him in with a deft touch and from a tight angle to the left of goal the United striker pokes it wide. Great game this.

    2/6/2013 7:58:08 PM
  • 25 min: GOAL! Rooney for England!
    2/6/2013 7:59:51 PM
  • 28 min: Cesar makes a great save after Walcott gets in round the back after a Wilshere pass. But it simply spills out to Rooney on the edge of the box and he slips it into the net. England 1 Brazil 0.
    2/6/2013 8:00:57 PM
  • 29 min: Nearly another - Walcott runs at the defence before slipping it in for Rooney but his shot is saved. Walcott is looking really dangerous this evening - looks like he's carried that Arsenal form into tonight's match.
    2/6/2013 8:02:27 PM
  • 31 min: Fabiano has a crack from range but it's blocked. England currently sitting a bit deep - they'll have to do more than defend for the next 60 minutes of football if they want to record their first win over Brazil for 23 years.
    2/6/2013 8:04:20 PM
  • #Rooney!! Good first half hour for the #threelions
    #Twitter92
  • 34 min: Walcott runs at Dante with the defender looking nervous. Luiz steps in to deal with it.
    2/6/2013 8:07:35 PM
  • 37 min: Patiently worked by England with Cleverley heavily involved. A little dinked pass is put into Rooney but he's unable to get it down in time just as it looks as if he's about to shoot.
    2/6/2013 8:10:12 PM
  • 38 min: Oh deary me - Neymar it's not your night is it. A fantastic ball across the box from Oscar finds Neymar (aka the next Pele) at the back post but he somehow conjures it over the bar. Should have been 1-1.
    2/6/2013 8:11:39 PM
  • 41 min: Cole allows the ball to bounce over his head and his Chelsea team-mate Oscar gets the better of him. Oscar, easily Brazil's best player so far, gets the ball in and some nice trickery from Paulinho nearly causes trouble for England.
    2/6/2013 8:14:16 PM
  • 43 min: Cracking shot from Rooney. Ronaldino tackles back but when the ball breaks to Wilshere he runs at the defence before the ball falls nicely for England No 10. He whacks it - but just wide.
    2/6/2013 8:15:49 PM
  • I really hope Rooney plays that way against Real Madrid next week
