  • 46 min: Ping-pong in the Belgium
box. Welbeck closes down the keeper which sees the ball break to Milner who crosses it low. Gerrard shoots, it's blocked. He shoots again, it's blocked. Chamberlain shoots, it's blocked, and then finally away.

  • HT: Half-time. England 1 Belgium 0.
    6/2/2012 5:02:55 PM
  • HT: So England lead at the break, but it's probably more than they deserve. The home side have been very flat, creating little and failing to string many passes together. Yet towards the end of the first half, Welbeck produced an excellent finish to put them ahead.
    6/2/2012 5:04:32 PM
  • HT: Belgium have been good in possession, holding the ball well as they probe the England defence. Yet they've failed to find any chinks in England's armour, which is a good sign for the home side.
    6/2/2012 5:05:41 PM
  • HT: It should also be noted Gary Cahill had to go off injured early on after he clattered into Joe Hart.
    6/2/2012 5:06:22 PM
  • HT: Back shortly for the second half...
    6/2/2012 5:06:48 PM
  • HT: We'll be back underway shortly. It would be nice to see a more attacking England, playing with more freedom and verve in this second period. Whether we will, particularly with a multitude of changes to be expected, remains to be seen. Fingers crossed.
    6/2/2012 5:14:35 PM
  • 46 min: We're off again. No changes.
    6/2/2012 5:18:59 PM
  • 48 min: Young twists and turns just inside the box on the right hand side but can't find a way through before Milner wins a corner. Young puts it in but it's cleared at the front post.
    6/2/2012 5:20:57 PM
  • 49 min: Chamberlain breaks down the left and his deep cross wins England another corner. Terry is on the end of it but under pressure, his header is well over the bar.
    6/2/2012 5:22:24 PM
  • 51 min: Loose pass from Gerrard as England look to continue where they left off in the first-half - playing badly. Vertonghen shoots from range - it's well wide.
    6/2/2012 5:24:12 PM
  • 53 min: Belgium probe again but England stand firm. Goal scorer Welbeck is taken off to a standing ovation. In his place comes Wayne Rooney.
    6/2/2012 5:26:53 PM
  • 54 min: With Rooney on the pitch we'll get to see what England will be missing in the first two matches of Euro 2012. Already he's been looking to get on the ball.
    6/2/2012 5:28:14 PM
  • 56 min: Vermaelen is down for Belgium. He and Milner chase hard for the same ball, with the two coming together. Milner is fine.
    6/2/2012 5:29:50 PM
  • 58 min: Gerrard drives through midfield but his pass is intercepted. It's been a poor performance from the England captain thus far.
    6/2/2012 5:31:15 PM
  • 59 min: Chamberlain is down holding his face after some wild arm flailing from Dembele. Not much in it really.
    6/2/2012 5:32:13 PM
  • 59 min: Mirallas is off for Chadli.
    6/2/2012 5:32:35 PM
  • 63 min: Hazard goes down on the edge of the box under a challenge from Johnson. The referee's not having that though. Belgium come again with Hazard testing Hart from range. Belgium look good in possession, they just need to be a bit more decisive - and they very nearly were there as Fellaini gets away a shot from the corner of the six yard box. Hart is behind it though.
    6/2/2012 5:35:54 PM
  • 64 min: Sorry for repeating myself, but England are just dreadful in possession. Hart is the culprit this time.
    6/2/2012 5:37:47 PM
  • 66 min: Chamberlain attempts to work his way through the middle but is forced off the ball.
    6/2/2012 5:39:39 PM
  • 67 min: That'll be the young Arsenal player's last action. He comes off for Walcott while Young is also off, to be replaced by Defoe.
    6/2/2012 5:40:39 PM
  • 68 min: Walcott has gone over to the left, with Milner remaining on the right hand side. Defoe looks to be leading the line with Rooney behind him.
    6/2/2012 5:41:32 PM
  • 70 min: Dangerous cross from Chadli which Hart helps over to the other side of the box. Belgium easy in possession.
    6/2/2012 5:42:38 PM
  • 71 min: Terry comes off, roundly booed by the Belgian fans. In his place will be Jagielka.
    6/2/2012 5:43:25 PM
  • 71 min: Rooney nearly finds Walcott with an incisive through ball, but it's intercepted.
    6/2/2012 5:44:33 PM
  • 72 min: Chelsea striker Lukaku comes on for Mertens.
    6/2/2012 5:45:54 PM
  • 74 min: Walcott is brought down on the right hand side. Gerrard puts it into the box where Fellaini heads it away.72 min: Walcott is brought down on the right hand side. Gerrard puts it into the box where Fellaini heads it away.
    6/2/2012 5:47:55 PM
  • 75 min: Rooney threads the ball in for Defoe but his shot is blocked and there's no England player there to follow up the loose ball.
    6/2/2012 5:48:46 PM
  • 77 min: Lescott has a cut to the face after a coming together with Lukaku.
    6/2/2012 5:50:33 PM
  • 79 min: Gillet hits the post. The full-back strikes it first time from range and Hart is beat. The England keeper is relieved to see it hit the outside of the woodwork and go behind.
    6/2/2012 5:51:52 PM
  • 80 min: Hart took a risk there. The England keeper took it past Lukaku and is lucky to be awarded a free-kick.
    6/2/2012 5:53:05 PM
  • 82 min: Off the post from Defoe. Walcott beats his man then passes it into the path of Defoe. The Tottenham striker shoots from an angle inside the box, beats the keeper but not the post as it pings back out.
    6/2/2012 5:55:52 PM
  • 84 min: Henderson comes on for Gerrard. One Liverpool man for another. Rooney has taken the armband.
    6/2/2012 5:56:42 PM
  • 86 min: Deep cross from Cole on the left hand side sees England win a corner. Rooney takes it but can only find a Belgium player. It comes back to the United forward but his next cross goes straight behind for a free-kick.
    6/2/2012 5:58:59 PM
  • 88 min: Belgium win a corner after a dodgy clearance from Johnson. Vertonghen has a free header at the back post but can only put it over the bar. Good chance.
    6/2/2012 6:00:46 PM
  • 89 min: Fellaini with a header but it goes wide. Gerrard is named man-of-the-match. For what, I'm not sure. The captain was poor.
    6/2/2012 6:01:49 PM
  • 90 min: Johnson wins England a free kick on the right hand side which Rooney puts in to a dangerous position. Defoe and Lescott are there but can't quite find an opportunity to shoot.
    6/2/2012 6:03:02 PM
  • 91 min: Close from Defoe. He and Walcott break and the Tottenham striker gets a shot away from just inside the box. It's a tight angle and it hits the side netting. Four minutes added-time.
    6/2/2012 6:04:40 PM
  • 92 min: Chadli shoots from a tight angle when he should have crossed. Hart deals with it. The England keeper is then behind a shot from Fellaini.
    6/2/2012 6:06:06 PM
  • 93 min: Belgium nearly in. Fellaini breaks and puts the ball across for Lukaku but he's just off-side.
    6/2/2012 6:07:15 PM
  • FT: Full-time. England 1 Belgium 0.
    6/2/2012 6:08:02 PM
  • FT: So England win, but it must be said that was a poor performance. Welbeck scored a fine goal when one-on-one with the Belgium keeper in the first half. But that was one of very few highlights in a dismal match.
    6/2/2012 6:09:37 PM
  • FT: England failed to pass well or keep possession. They looked lacking in purpose when going forward. But on the positive side, they limited a talented Belgium side to few opportunities.
    6/2/2012 6:10:55 PM
  • FT: Chamberlain, for all the talk before kick-off, failed to live up to the unfair expectation placed on his shoulders. He tried, but had little influence on the game and when presented with a couple of opportunities to shoot - missed the target.
    6/2/2012 6:12:33 PM
  • FT: One positive for England might be the introduction of Defoe and Walcott. The pair linked well and gave England a threat in the last 20 minutes they had been lacking up until that point.
    6/2/2012 6:13:24 PM
  • FT: Despite the poor performance, it's another win for England and that's not to be sniffed at. England aren't playing well, but they're winning. That's a sign of something I'm sure...
    6/2/2012 6:14:36 PM
  • FT: The Independent will be live-blogging all the England games and the knock-out phase of Euro 2012. We look forward to seeing you there. Good night and enjoy the rest of the Jubilee weekend.
