    5/12/2014 12:58:44 PM
  • Last minute thoughts...

    5/12/2014 1:01:39 PM

    5/12/2014 1:03:57 PM
  • Early squad thought...

    5/12/2014 1:04:25 PM
  • Roy Hodgson named the England squad that we all expected, given that the news that both Ashley Cole and Kyle Walker had not made the cut last night.
    5/12/2014 1:05:07 PM
  • Hodsgson will take the mandatory three goalkeepers, just seven defenders, nine midfielders and four strikers to make up his 23-man squad. The inclusion of Jones and Smalling means that there is only one recognised right-back in Liverpool's Johnson, with his club team-mate John Flanagan among the stand-by list.
    5/12/2014 1:08:52 PM
  • We now eagerly await the England manager, who, as you can see above, will be holding his press conference at the Vauxhall showroom in Luton. Not quite the razzmatazz that Sven-Goran Eriksson brought with his individual player unveiling in 2006, but we'll take anything when it comes to the World Cup.
    5/12/2014 1:12:37 PM
  • Should Cleverley and Carroll been included? James and Mark believe so...

    5/12/2014 1:16:52 PM
  • Here comes Roy...
    5/12/2014 1:17:22 PM
  • Roy Hodgson: It's a big day. Big day for me, to announce the squad that I've obviously given a lot of thought to  in making a lot of decisions that haven't been easy to make.
    5/12/2014 1:19:09 PM
  • Roy Hodgson: I hope for the country that the squad we've chosen will give a good account of itself in Brazil and not let the country down.
    5/12/2014 1:19:54 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on the decision to take Shaw instead of Cole: An unbelievably hard decision, especially given the grace and maturity that Ashley has dealt with it.
    5/12/2014 1:20:47 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on Lampard: He still plays a very important role in his club side despite the fact he's not as young as other players.
    5/12/2014 1:21:40 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on World Cup experience: How do you get experience, well you give opportunity. Those six that have been before had once never been to a World Cup. He feel we have a good balance.
    5/12/2014 1:22:44 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on naming youngsters: They've imposed themselves upon me. I don't think its a question that I set out to take them. I think it's because of their form and performance that they have imposed their form and success on my selection.
    5/12/2014 1:24:03 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on youngsters: You can't ignore what players are doing on a weekly basis for their club sides. it's your decision to pick the best man to do the job.
    5/12/2014 1:25:03 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on selecting injury concerns: We wouldn't have selected anybody in this 23 if we seriously thought we would be on tenterhooks with their fitness.
    5/12/2014 1:26:24 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on injury concerns: The only worry is Phil Jones who has a three week injury but we can't guarantee that. If he has not recovered before June 2 then John Stones will go to Brazil.
    5/12/2014 1:28:28 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on winning the World Cup: Of course I believe the squad can win the World Cup otherwise what is the point of taking a squad there? But they are empty words.
    5/12/2014 1:29:35 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on winning the World Cup: These talented players, and I'm sure you in the room will agree they are talented, will have to show their talent if we are to win. I think we can have a certain degree of optimism. Will it take us to a World Cup final? Who knows. But we'll be doing our best.
    5/12/2014 1:31:34 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on attack: In those front six positions we have a lot of options, a lot of possibilities, and I think it's a lot of exciting options in those front six positions.
    5/12/2014 1:32:51 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on Wayne Rooney: Wayne will go on holiday with a physio to maintain his levels of fitness and match sharpness so he comes into the World Cup at his best.
    5/12/2014 1:34:06 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on Ross Barkley: He's a very ,very exciting player, a very exciting talent. If he can continue at that level then he has a fantastic future ahead of him, but i hope that people have realistic expectations of him. I wouldn't want to put him under the pressure that every time he gets the ball he has to score a goal like he did against Man City or dribble the ball 40-yards and beat five defenders.
    5/12/2014 1:36:03 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on squad: This is a group of players that has got the potential, that could do very well, and it's our job to make sure when we look in the mirror, we don't see something that we don't want to see.
    5/12/2014 1:38:22 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on Euro 2016: We're not thinking about that. 2016 is a long way off. This tournament is everything to us. I will refute any claims that these players are for 2016. They're for 2014.
    5/12/2014 1:39:36 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on whether he's selected a 'family saloon or a sports car': I'm not sure I'm clever enough to answer that. I'll leave you to answer that, but what I will say is I'm very happy to drive it.
    5/12/2014 1:40:50 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on Gerrard's slip and his mentality: No concerns whatsoever. I share his disappointment. I was very sad that he feels himself responsisible for a mistake that I feel was not a mistake of an individual but a moment in a game of football when you slip over.
    5/12/2014 1:42:44 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on adventurous squad: I'm not enormously surprised as I've been thinking about it for a long time!
    5/12/2014 1:43:58 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on England being the Vauxhall of the football world: You've put me on dangerous ground. I'm always afraid to answer questions that contain 'the perception elsewhere is...'
    5/12/2014 1:45:41 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on England's status: I'd be a little bit surprised if: Number one -we are really at that level, and number two - it doesn't matter.
    5/12/2014 1:46:44 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on City winning the league: I don;t think anything about that. City are a fantastic clu, had a fantastic season and been crowned worthy champions.
    5/12/2014 1:47:34 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on squad: I thought there were more than 23 players that deserved to go and that's not taking into considerations the four players who have been ruled out through injury.
    5/12/2014 1:48:35 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on his selection since the win over Denmark in March: It's changed due to injury,. We lost Theo Walcott, we lost Jay Rodriquez, we lost Kyle Walker and we lost Andros Townsend. The large body of our squad has been decided for quite some time, but there hasn;t been any changes due to the last few weeks. No knee-jerk reactions.
    5/12/2014 1:51:21 PM
  • Roy Hodgson on whether he asked Cole to go on stand-by list: I'm going to keep that conversation private. I rang him to say that I had picked elsewhere and that I respect Ashley enough to keep that private. I don;t want words attributed to me that I didn't say so I'm going to keep that to myself.
    5/12/2014 1:52:49 PM

  • Hodgson will be taking a youthful looking squad to Brazil, as Simon Rice explains:
Jack Wilshere, Luke Shaw, Ross Barkley, Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been included in the England squad for the World Cup. In a line-up that has a youthful edge, Roy Hodgson has also included Frank Lampard and Adam Lallana in his 23-man squad.

  • Here's more on Hodgson's defence of selecting Frank Lampard:
The Chelsea player, who will turn 36 during the tournament, is the oldest member of the England squad heading to Brazil. "You can't compare players in terms of age but in terms of position and what they bring to the team. Frank has been the captain of the team during my two years and vice captain to Steven Gerrard," said Hodgson.
