  • Reaction from Van Persie who scored a brace: "It is always nice to score, especially at Wembley. I am ready glad for everyone. Last year I did not score too many headers, so I have to improve on that. We have got Wilfried Zaha, who is doing really well. I believe in this team, we are the champions.

"I cannot explain us being third favourites for the title. We will compete again."
    8/11/2013 3:06:56 PM
  • Man of the match Carrick speaking after the game: "We looked a lot better today. We were in control of the game, and we felt we could score.

"As pleasing as it was for Robin van Persie to get the goals, it was important to be solid today. It is another stepping stone.

"We are playing a lot of the big teams early on, and we have to be ready. In the past you could start slower, but now you cannot do that."
    8/11/2013 3:07:32 PM
  • Robin van Persie restored order to Manchester United's troubled pre-season by grabbing the goals that brought David Moyes his first trophy as manager. Van Persie struck early in each half to allow United to repel the threat of an enterprising Wigan outfit and claim the Community Shield for the 20th time. More importantly, it was silverware at the first available opportunity for Moyes, who has such a massive job on his hands after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson in May.
