  • Should Chelsea draw Atletico Madrid, Thibault Courtois will find himself at the centre of a potentially crucial contract clause, as Pete Jenson and Jack Pitt-Brooke investigate:
No keeper has let in fewer goals in this season’s tournament with the Belgian conceding only five. But a clause in his loan contract will prevent him playing against Chelsea unless the Spanish club are prepared to pay a huge fee to the Londoners, believed to be around £4.5m, for the two matches. A fee would also be due if the two sides were to meet in the final instead. Last night, Chelsea would not comment on the contractual situation.

  • Pre-draw expectations:

    4/11/2014 9:16:04 AM
  • Like the quarter-finals, we'll see the friendly faces of Uefa chief executive Gianni Infantino and former Champions League winner Luis Figo, who is the official ambassador for the Lisbon 2014 final.
    4/11/2014 9:17:49 AM
  • Here's how the draw will work:
All teams can face each other as there is no longer any restrictions like the last-16 draw.
The first team drawn in each tie will play at home on April 22/23
The second team drawn in each tie will play at home on April 29/30
The Europa League semi-final draw will follow after, with Benfica, Juventus, Sevilla and Valencia in the running for the final.

  • For the first time in Champions League history, Madrid will have two team's in the draw for the semi-finals. Will Real secure their much-desired 10th crown, or can Atletico claim a maiden Champions League title?
There were celebrations, but they were short-lived. There were certainly no champagne corks popping just yet. This is Real Madrid, a club with high expectations and those expectations usually amount to winning the Champions League year after year. This year is no different. Instead, most of the Champions League bathing was being done in the red and white half of the city, mainly down by the Manzanares river that runs to the south of Madrid and alongside Atletico Madrid’s Vicente Calderon stadium. Atleti are hoping to move to a brand-new stadium in the coming seasons but on Wednesday night their famous old home base enjoyed one of its greatest nights. Koke’s fifth-minute goal had Diego Simeone’s side 2-1 up on aggregate against Barcelona and that’s the way it stayed to see Barca crash out and Los Colchoneros deservedly progress to the semi-finals of the competition for the first time in 40 years.

  • Seems a number of you are favouring a Chelsea-Atletico draw. Is that a wise choice given Atletico's impressive form of late?

    4/11/2014 9:35:50 AM
  • With a look at the vote, there's no clear front-runner as of yet. Is this the tightest Champions League race in history? It's hard to think of a closer one...
    4/11/2014 9:39:53 AM
  • Appears Uefa have ruled that any attempt by Chelsea to prevent Thibault Courtois playing for Atletico against his parent club will be rejected:

    4/11/2014 9:44:54 AM
  • Here's the Uefa statement surrounding the Courtois deal:
In response to media reports referring to the situation of Club Atlético de Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, UEFA would like to reiterate its position. The integrity of sporting competition is a fundamental principle for UEFA. Both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations contain clear provisions which strictly forbid any club to exert, or attempt to exert, any influence whatsoever over the players that another club may (or may not) field in a match. It follows that any provision in a private contract between clubs which might function in such a way as to influence who a club fields in a match is null, void and unenforceable so far as UEFA is concerned. Furthermore, any attempt to enforce such a provision would be a clear violation of both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations and would therefore be sanctioned accordingly.

  • Has Chelsea's allowance to let Thibault Courtois stay with Atletico this season come back to haunt them?

  • Final thoughts as we approach the draw:

    4/11/2014 9:54:14 AM
  • Just five minutes to go until the ceremony gets underway. Infantino and Figo at the ready, Real Madrid just leading the way in the vote, Courtois stealing the headlines ahead of the draw, it's all going on and we haven't even started yet!
    4/11/2014 9:57:19 AM
  • So after that powerful statement form Uefa, let's not hang around. The ceremony is about to begin!
    4/11/2014 10:03:46 AM
  • How many montages can we expect? There'll certainly be two, one four the Champions League teams and the Europa League teams. But never doubt Uefa's ability to squeeze in an unexpected montage at the last second.

    4/11/2014 10:10:58 AM
  • Ciro Ferrara is on hand for the Europa League draw. Rumours have it he forgot to bring his tie and had to be lent one. He's rocking the mad scientist look regardless. We're already on our second montage, by the way.
    4/11/2014 10:12:18 AM
  • Sevilla v Valencia

    4/11/2014 10:25:21 AM
  • End of one draw and the beginning of another? The perfect time for a montage!
    4/11/2014 10:26:40 AM
  • Figo takes to the stage, just in time for our fourth montage of the morning. Did anyone have money on four? My guess of two was way off the mark.
    4/11/2014 10:28:13 AM
  • Uefa's sergeant at arms Gianni Infantino:

    4/11/2014 10:28:45 AM
  • Figo elects Atletico Madrid as his surprise package of the last four, but admits they fully deserve to be here. He then completely swerves Infantino's question of whether they can win. Very diplomatic of the Portuguese. A fifth montage! And this one isn't even about football, it's about the city of Lisbon, which will host the final. Wake me up when the draw takes place.
    4/11/2014 10:32:00 AM

    4/11/2014 10:37:21 AM
  • Having stolen the headlines before the draw, all eyes will be on whether Thibault Courtois will play against his parent club Chelsea. After Uefa's hard-hitting statement earlier this morning, you get the impression we haven't heard the last of this. What's the odds on a mystery injury to the Belgian goalkeeper?
    4/11/2014 10:40:05 AM
  • Let's take a look how that's changed the vote:
A lot of support coming in for a Real Madrid v Chelsea final, and no doubt that would centre around one man - Mr Jose Mourinho.
    4/11/2014 10:42:00 AM
  • Emilio Butragueño "A lot of confidence in the players but it will be extremely tough against Bayern. Of course I hope Real Madrid reach the final and win."
