  • Manchester City v Bayern Munich kicks off in just over 90 minutes, but Group D isn't hanging about  - from the earlier kick-off in Russia, CSKA Moscow are currently leading the group's potential whipping boys Viktoria Plzen 2-1, with 57 minutes played.
    10/2/2013 5:13:40 PM
  • All quiet on the Twitter front from Manchester City's players, except this insightful gift from youth prospect Reece Wabara. I wonder what he has seen on loan at Doncaster?

    10/2/2013 5:21:01 PM
  • Here is Tim Rich's excellent preview for the match from today's Independent.

Guardiola is, however, not just one of the finest coaches in world football, he is among the most charming. An awkward press conference was effortlessly defused.

  • But over in Ukraine, Ryan Giggs could set a Champions League milestone tonight. We'll have all the team news as soon as it is out. In the meantime, read Simon Rice's list of the the top ten appearance makers in the history of the great European competition by CLICKING HERE

The Welshman is currently tied with Raul on 144 appearances and the others in the top ten read like a list of whose who in the Champions League era.

  • So how is the former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola changing Bayern Munich? And how do you improve a treble-winning side? Read Jack Pitt-Brooke's expert analysis by CLICKING HERE

In practical terms, that means changing Heynckes' preferred 4-2-3-1 system for a more ambitious 4-1-4-1. Guardiola thinks he only needs one holding player, thereby allowing him two creators and two wingers behind his lone centre-forward.

    10/2/2013 5:39:09 PM
  • And the teams are here...
    10/2/2013 5:40:25 PM
  • Manchester City: Hart, Richards, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy, Toure, Fernandinho, Navas, Nasri, Aguero, Dzeko
    10/2/2013 5:40:48 PM
  • Bayern Munich: Neuer, Dante, Ribéry, Robben, Rafinha, Boateng, Lahm, Müller, Alaba, Schweinsteiger, Kroos
    10/2/2013 5:42:32 PM
  • So Manuel Pellegrini makes a surprise choice - Micah Richards, the forgotten man of the City defence, makes only his second appearance of the season, starting at right-back.
    10/2/2013 5:44:25 PM
  • Sergio Aguero is back in the City starting line-up, and no, you have not read that wrong, Bayern Munich are starting without a known striker. Is this part of Guardiola's 'false No 9' ideology? It might not be so false when Borussia Dortmund front man Robert Lewandowski joins Munich next season..
    10/2/2013 5:48:59 PM

  • 10/2/2013 5:52:04 PM
  • David Silva, who has been out of action since August with a thigh injury, has been named on the City bench. The creative Spaniard could prove to be an inspired substitution tonight.
    10/2/2013 5:54:50 PM
  • As is the case this season in the Champions League, the youth teams face each other in the Uefa Youth League before the senior sides play, and the City will hope that their result becomes a good omen - the City developmental team thrashed their Bayern equivalent 6-0, yes, 6-0...
    10/2/2013 6:02:07 PM
  • News from Ukraine - Wayne Rooney is not in the Manchester United squad at all. It has been reported that the forward is suffering illness.
    10/2/2013 6:11:09 PM
  • Man Utd: De Gea, Rafael, Smalling, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Fellaini, Cleverley, Welbeck, Van Persie.
    10/2/2013 6:11:49 PM
  • Ryan Giggs is on the United bench and could, of course, still make his milestone appearance.
    10/2/2013 6:12:14 PM
  • Shakhtar: Pyatov, Srna, Kucher, Rakitskiy, Shevchuk, Fernando, Hubschman, Douglas Costa, Teixeira, Taison, Adriano
    10/2/2013 6:12:37 PM
  • The tricky Douglas Costa, who has interested United in the past, could pose his suitors a few problems.
    10/2/2013 6:13:48 PM
  • The selection of Richards is already polarising the Twitter opinion:

    10/2/2013 6:16:52 PM
  • To put a number on things, that's a whopping NINE changes by David Moyes from the United starting line-up which lost to West Brom at the weekend.
    10/2/2013 6:18:45 PM
  • Gareth Bale is out of Real Madrid's match against Copenhagen with a thigh injury, so time for Cristiano Ronaldo to get all the plaudits again..
    10/2/2013 6:21:38 PM
  • Marcos Lopez helped himself to a hat-trick for the City youth team in their 6-0 demolition of Bayern's youth team earlier today.

    10/2/2013 6:23:43 PM

  • 10/2/2013 6:27:53 PM

  • 10/2/2013 6:27:57 PM
  • So there's the reason for Rooney's omission - from cut foreheads to swelled shins, the England striker is certainly in the wars when it comes to training this season.
    10/2/2013 6:29:18 PM
  • Thrilling finish to the other match from Group D earlier this evening - CSKA Moscow ran out 3-2 winners, despite a late fightback from Viktoria Plzen. Three teams on three points in the group now.

    10/2/2013 6:34:02 PM

  • 10/2/2013 6:39:18 PM
  • The teams come down the Etihad tunnel, and we await that stirring Champions League theme. The crucial tie is coming up..
    10/2/2013 6:43:08 PM
  • 2 mins: And the match is under way, adhering to Guardiola's strict methods, Bayern put on the pressure from the get-go. Sensing a weak link, Richards is chased down by Ribery immediately.
    10/2/2013 6:47:08 PM
  • 5 mins: A strong leap from Richards in the Bayern area, but his header is well caught by Neuer. The Germans on the counter-attack..but it comes to nothing.
    10/2/2013 6:51:18 PM
  • GOAL! Manchester City 0 Bayern Munich 1 (Ribery 7 mins)
    10/2/2013 6:51:57 PM
  • England No 1 Joe Hart has had his critics this season, and they will continue after that goal. Franck Ribery cuts in from the right and powers in a shot from 25 yards, and it beats Hart at his near post. On the face of it that should have been a straightforward save.
    10/2/2013 6:53:55 PM
  • It has already been a night to forget for Joe Hart..

    10/2/2013 6:55:26 PM
  • 13 mins: Richards jumps to clear the ball and flattens Kroos. Looked a nasty fall for the German but he's up again. Replays showing the devastation in Hart's face after the goal, he'll have to pick himself up from that one. The Champions League holders starting to look very comfortable.
    10/2/2013 6:59:39 PM
  • 16 mins: The home side having to play long balls, and just can't get a foothold in the game at the moment. The timing of that early goal looking more important by each passing minute.
    10/2/2013 7:02:09 PM
  • 17 mins: Hart punches away Alaba's cross, Kroos, who is no longer dazed, volleys in the rebound but it goes wide.
    10/2/2013 7:04:10 PM
  • GOAL! Shakhtar 0 Manchester United 1: Big, big, goal for the under-fire David Moyes, and it comes from Danny Welbeck.
    10/2/2013 7:06:26 PM
  • 24 mins: It's becoming a footballing exhibition from Bayern, a true elite level performance so far. Possession, passing, movement. Has Guardiola done the impossible, and even improved them from last season's treble winners?
    10/2/2013 7:08:57 PM

  • 10/2/2013 7:10:00 PM
  • Twitter has also enjoyed the masterclass from Bayern, who have a vice-like grip on the game at the moment.

    10/2/2013 7:12:29 PM

  • 10/2/2013 7:13:05 PM
  • Ribery would still have scored, even with Alaba grabbing on to him

    10/2/2013 7:14:11 PM
  • 32 mins: Two chances in two minutes for Bayern, with success down both flanks. First Robben fizzes in a low cross which Muller lunges in but can't connect with, then confusion in the area from Alaba's cross from the right sees Hart save on the line from a ricochet. Pellegrini's complexion a ghost-like shade of white on the touchline.
    10/2/2013 7:20:59 PM
  • 38 mins: Schweinsteiger takes a free-kick from 25 yards out, but Dzeko blocks it in the wall. Bayern back to retaining possession. With seven minutes until the break, what will Pellegrini do at half-time? Silva on the bench has to be his best option. At the moment it looks like he could bring him on as a 12th player and it would still be hard for City to get into the game.
