  • In case you wanted Joey Barton's big-game predictions

  • And the teams emerge from the tunnel at the Allianz Arena. The stadium erupts and United are greeted by an imposing sea of red and white. It has to remembered, however, that a win for United and Sir Alex Ferguson's choice of Moyes as his successor will go some way to being justified..
    4/9/2014 6:43:57 PM
  • 2 min: And they are off at the Allianz Arena! Carrick winning possession early in the centre was an encouraging sign but then Ribery gets into space down the left before the move comes to nothing.
    4/9/2014 6:47:45 PM
  • 3 min: Bayern now getting into their passing rhythm. United hardly had a sniff of the ball so far. Each time they look to cause danger down the wings.
    4/9/2014 6:50:15 PM
    4/9/2014 6:51:28 PM
  • 4 min: And there's already a goal at the Vicente Calderon! Koke fizzes one in from close range after meeting Adrian Lopez's header. What a start!
    4/9/2014 6:53:05 PM
  • 7 min: Chipped toe, or no chipped toe, Rooney, playing through the pain barrier, engineers a chance on the edge of the box, but Lahm eventually blocks his effort. He had Bayern looking rattled there.
    4/9/2014 6:54:37 PM
  • 10 min: Now it's United turn to pass the ball around but Kroos leaps in quickly to win back possession. Will the counter-attack be United's only option tonight?
    4/9/2014 6:56:24 PM
  • 12 min: Lahm tries to cross one in for Mandzukic but Evra heads away. And now another cross from Bayern is cleared. Just like United against Fulham this one...
    4/9/2014 6:57:45 PM
  • 14 min: Robben gets into space in the area, cuts it back and aims for a trademark curling effort...but it goes wide of the post. De Gea looks stranded there. A warning sign.
    4/9/2014 7:00:03 PM
  • 15 min: Bayern go back to toying with their opposition like a cat with a mouse. After a comfortable passing move, Robben gets a chance at the edge of the area but thrashes his shot over.
    4/9/2014 7:02:24 PM
  • 16 min: United have the ball in the back of the net...but it's not given. It was an easy call for the linesman there as Valencia slides from the cross to beat Neuer but he's clearly offside.
    4/9/2014 7:03:53 PM
  • 20 min: Jones goes rampaging down the right wing but the pass does not find him. Bayern sense blood and exploit the space he left straight away, Ribery charges into the box but the move breaks down.
    4/9/2014 7:07:25 PM
  • 22 min: It appears Welbeck will have to play the rest of the half with a split boot as the Bayern tunnel to get back onto the pitch is locked so they cannot just go and get him another pair. He's got one of the them taped up now. How unfortunate.

    4/9/2014 7:09:50 PM
  • 24 min: Bayern getting closer. Robben dancing into the area before his shot is block by Jones. There's danger every time Robben gets near the ball at the moment.
    4/9/2014 7:11:37 PM

  • 4/9/2014 7:12:08 PM
  • 26 min: Valencia gets his pocket picked by Ribery, who turns and then fires a daisy cutter from long range which curls just wide. Valencia was caught napping there...
    4/9/2014 7:13:37 PM
  • 28 min: Now United look to attack. Kagawa plays in Evra on the overlap in the area but, like Valencia earlier, he's called offside. Pace can certainly worry this Bayern side...
    4/9/2014 7:15:24 PM
  • 32 min: Over half an hour gone, and Moyes won't be too disappointed with what he has seen so far. As expected, Bayern have had the lion's share of possession, but they haven't broken the United defence down yet. United have looked dangerous on the break, and they will get more spaces to exploit as the game progresses.
    4/9/2014 7:18:25 PM
  • 33 min: There may be close to 70,000 at the Allianz Area, but you could easily make out Moyes collaring Welbeck there, "Danny Welbeck!" he shouted. Maybe he was just letting him know he had a new pair of boots for him...

    4/9/2014 7:21:01 PM
  • 35 min: United enjoying a rare prolonged period of possession in the second leg, Bayern win the ball back but United have pressured them to lose it quickly, Neuer with a scuffed clearance for the back-pass. Does the Bayern defence actually look nervous?
    4/9/2014 7:23:28 PM
  • 37 min: Kross gets a long range shot away after collecting Robben's pass but, unusually for him, skies his effort high and wide.
    4/9/2014 7:25:02 PM
  • 39 min: United on the break and Lahm takes out of Evra on the edge of the box, and not much of the ball by the looks of things but referee Jonas Eriksson waves play on.
    4/9/2014 7:26:41 PM
  • 43 min: Robben powers forward, accelerating past Carrick. As ever, he looks to cut it back for the shot on his left foot but the ball is deflected out for a corner. United clear the corner and try and play in Rooney down the centre but Lahm makes the save. Another encouraging sign for United. Pace will be key.
    4/9/2014 7:31:39 PM
  • HT: Eriksson blows up and that's the end of the action for the first half. United are not out of this one, not by a long shot. At the Vicente Calderon, Atletico go in with their tails up, but Messi and Co will still be there to greet them after the break.
    4/9/2014 7:34:41 PM

  • 4/9/2014 7:44:20 PM

  • 4/9/2014 7:44:49 PM
  • I doubt Eriksson was asking where Rooney had his hair done...

    4/9/2014 7:46:45 PM
  • 46 min: And United get the second half under way...
    4/9/2014 7:47:38 PM
  • 47 min: United win an early corner. Rooney lofts the ball into the path of Jones but its deflected away for another corner, which Neuer punches away.
    4/9/2014 7:49:11 PM
  • 48 min: Bayern's turn to attack. They win the corner, but Vidic clears. United more than equalling the German giants so far in this half.
    4/9/2014 7:51:45 PM
  • 50 min: Bayern, it has to be said, do not need to score tonight. Should the score stay how it is, they would progress on the away goals rule.
    4/9/2014 7:53:22 PM
  • 53 min: Bayern beginning to look comfortable. They get yet another corner and the ball is cleared. Eventually it rebounds into the path of Boateng but he smashes his effort wide.
