  • And the teams are out...
Laurent Koscielny has won his fitness battle to start for Arsenal. The French defender had missed Arsenal's 4-1 FA Cup victory over Everton on Saturday with a hamstring problem.  Elsewhere, club-captain Thomas Vermaelen starts at left-back with Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal sidelined. Lukas Podolski comes in for Mathieu Flamini, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain moving to the centre of midfield.

Arsenal: Fabianski, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Vermaelen; Arteta, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Cazorla, Ozil, Podolski; Giroud.
Bayern Munich: Neuer, Lahm, Martinez, Dante, Alaba; Schweinsteiger, Thiago; Robben Gotze, Ribery; Mandzukic.

  • Anyone for a scarf?

    3/11/2014 7:15:37 PM
  • In addition to those earlier teams, it's worth mentioning that Arsenal only have six substitutes on the bench. Bayern have Muller and Kroos...

Arsenal subs: Viviano, Rosicky, Flamini, Jenkinson, Gnabry, Hayden.

Bayern Munich subs: Starke, Van Buyten, Rafinha, Pizarro, Boateng, Muller, Kroos.

    3/11/2014 7:21:13 PM
  • Arsenal's six-man bench is raising some concern on Twitter it seems...

    3/11/2014 7:33:58 PM
  • Just the five minutes until kick-off, soon we will hear that stirring theme. Arsene Wenger has put out an attacking team, and says they have to "push forward". But will it be mission impossible in Germany?
    3/11/2014 7:40:40 PM
  • 1 min: And Arsenal get us  underway! The wait is over...
    3/11/2014 7:45:40 PM
  • 3 min: Bayern look comfortable in midfield and are already getting into their passing stride. Thiago chips in a free-kick, but it's cleared by Mertesacker back on home soil.
    3/11/2014 7:48:25 PM
  • 5 min: Bayern with a corner, and it's that man Mertesacker with the clearance again. A more attacking start from the Bundesliga side than some had anticipated.
    3/11/2014 7:50:57 PM
  • 8 min: Early yellow card to Bayern's Dante. A long-ball upfield sees the pace of Oxlade-Chamberlain run at the Brazilian defender, who takes him down. Encouraging start for the young England international.
    3/11/2014 7:53:54 PM
  • Over in Spain, Diego Costa has already scored for Madrid, giving the La Liga side a 2-0 advantage over Milan. Balotelli and Co have it all to do now...
    3/11/2014 7:55:51 PM
  • 10 min: Oxlade-Chamberlain looks to start a quick counter-attack for Arsenal. But his pass forward to Podolski is blocked by Martinez.
    3/11/2014 7:57:00 PM
  • 14 min: Robben finds space on the right, he plays in Lahm on the overlap, but he's called offside. A worrying amount of space there for the flying Dutchman
    3/11/2014 8:00:49 PM
  • 16 min: The Gunners keeping possession, but it is all inside their own half. Not where Wenger will want to see the ball...
    3/11/2014 8:01:54 PM
  • How Twitter have seen the opening period...

    3/11/2014 8:03:47 PM
  • 19 min: Nice work by Podolski down the left, he twists and turns past Lahm, but his cross to Giroud is blocked by Martinez.
    3/11/2014 8:04:51 PM
  • 20 min: Bayern's deadly duo - Ribery and Robben combine for the best chance of the match. Alaba puts Ribery in down the left, he crosses for Robben in space...but he can only side-foot his effort wide.
    3/11/2014 8:06:35 PM
  • 21 min: Sagna is caught out, and with Ozil not tracking back quick enough, Bayern left-back Alaba finds himself in acres of space, he tries to fire a low cross across the box, but the long limbs of Mertesacker block the effort. A better run from Mandzukic there and it could have been a three-goal deficit Arsenal were looking at.
    3/11/2014 8:09:08 PM
  • 25 min: A fine couple of minutes there for Bayern. Keeping the ball with ease, making the Gunners look at times like headless chickens. If any team could kill a game, it is them..
    3/11/2014 8:11:26 PM
    3/11/2014 8:11:44 PM
  • 26 min: But Martinez is ruled offside. The Spaniard volleyed in Alaba's free-kick but it was the correct call by the referee. Nervous period for the Gunners this.
    3/11/2014 8:13:17 PM
  • 30 min: Fantastic run there from Oxlade-Chamberlain, dancing around Schweinsteiger before he was fouled just outside the area. The free-kick is taken by Cazorla, but is deflected out for a corner.
    3/11/2014 8:16:51 PM
  • 31 min: Giroud meets Ozil's corner with a header, but the ball is well saved by  Neuer. The Gunners' best chance of the game. It is not all one-way traffic.
    3/11/2014 8:19:02 PM
  • 33 min: Robben finds space in the area again, and tries a low cross which is blocked by Kosielny. At times you feel Bayern are trying to pass the ball in, which team have we heard that phrase used about before?
    3/11/2014 8:21:05 PM
  • 36 min: Some nice interplay between Giroud and Cazorla sees the Spaniard try to put Podolski in, but Martinez gets there first.
    3/11/2014 8:23:17 PM
  • 37 min: Another chance for Robben! A sublime one-two with Gotze, and Robben takes a shot from the centre of the area, but it's blocked by Koscielny. Fabianski looked to be beaten there.
    3/11/2014 8:24:56 PM
  • 38 min: Manzukic gets a free header in the area but can only power it narrowly over. Bayern are getting closer and closer to putting this tie to bed.
    3/11/2014 8:25:50 PM
  • Robben is confusing Twitter as much as he is confusing Vermaelen at the moment it seems..

    3/11/2014 8:27:28 PM
  • 44 min: Just over a minute until half-time. Thiago pulling the strings for Bayern from the centre for Munich. Gotze will a snap half-volley from the edge of the area, but it is shot straight at Fabianski.
    3/11/2014 8:30:15 PM
  • HT: Bayern by far the better team, but Arsenal hanging on in there. This tie is certainly not over yet...
    3/11/2014 8:31:51 PM
  • Giroud loses the ball to the towering Martinez

    3/11/2014 8:45:27 PM
  • A major change made by Wenger at half-time. Rosicky on for Ozil. The Czech aiming to produce a more inspiring performance than Ozil for the second half.
    3/11/2014 8:48:42 PM
  • 50 min: Bayern starting the second period, again looking the more dangerous side. Robben goes down in the box, clashing with Cazorla trying to win a penalty, just like three weeks ago, but the referee does not give anything.
    3/11/2014 8:55:14 PM
  • 51 min: Arsenal have given the reason for Ozil's substitution - he had hamstring problem apparently.
    3/11/2014 8:56:17 PM
  • 55 min: GOAL FOR BAYERN!
    3/11/2014 8:57:43 PM
  • 55 min: And that is probably it for Arsenal's Champions League charge for this season now. Ribery  passes the ball across the box, and with time, the advancing Schweinsteiger takes a touch, then strokes the ball past Fabianski. All too easy there for the Germans.
    3/11/2014 8:59:10 PM
    3/11/2014 8:59:45 PM
  • 56 min: Podolski looked to push Lahm, but wins the ball at the left-hand side of the area. He looks up and absolutely smashes the ball past Neuer to score against his former team! Arsenal right back in this now.
    3/11/2014 9:01:18 PM
  • 60 min: The second half continuing at a frantic pace. The game becoming more and more stretched. Arsenal growing in confidence.
    3/11/2014 9:04:45 PM

  • 3/11/2014 9:05:23 PM
  • 63 min: Bayern looking to calm things down and control the game. Schweinsteiger gets into space 25 yards out, he fires in a shot, but it sails wide of Fabianski's goal.
    3/11/2014 9:07:26 PM
  • 65 min: Sagna lofts over a cross, but it evades Giroud. Every Arsenal break offering a glimpse of a chance. Can they do the unthinkable?
    3/11/2014 9:09:33 PM
  • 67 min: An incredibly sloppy pass by goalkeeper Neuer, it goes straight to Giroud, he tries to play Rosicky in, but there was too much weight on the pass.
    3/11/2014 9:12:09 PM
  • 68 min: What a chance for Bayern! Alaba cushions the ball across goal to Mandzukic, but instead of taking a shot he controls the ball on his knee and Fabianski comes out to make a block. The striker should have done better there.
    3/11/2014 9:13:37 PM
  • Podolski wheels away in celebration. But is it too little, too late

    3/11/2014 9:16:33 PM
  • 74 min: Approaching the final 15 minutes, and the 18-year-old German Serge Gnabry has been summoned from the bench. Time for the pacy midfielder it seems.
    3/11/2014 9:18:29 PM
  • 78 min: Gnabry on for Arteta. But Bayern beginning to toy with their opponents as the game reaches it's final 10 minutes.
    3/11/2014 9:22:14 PM
  • 80 min: Podolski, what handful he has been in the second half, creates some room in the box and crosses for Giroud, but Neuer comes out and catches.
    3/11/2014 9:24:23 PM
  • 84 min: Flamini comes on to replace the impressive Oxlade-Chamberlain. Wenger would bring a striker on...if he had one on the bench, of course.
    3/11/2014 9:28:24 PM
  • 86 min: Cazorla plays in Podolski, but he's called offside. Arsenal are going down fighting.
    3/11/2014 9:30:54 PM
  • 88 min: Gnabry runs at Alaba on the outside of the box, he cuts to his left...but the German teenager can only blast his effort over.
    3/11/2014 9:33:01 PM
    3/11/2014 9:34:17 PM
  • 90 min: Going nowhere, and with his back to goal, Robben is fouled by Koscielny. Muller steps up from the spot...
    3/11/2014 9:35:05 PM
    3/11/2014 9:35:30 PM
  • 91 min: Make that three missed penalties now over the two legs between the teams after Muller's tame spot-kick is stopped by Fabianski. It spins tantalisingly across the line, but the 'keeper recovers to scoop the ball away.
    3/11/2014 9:37:15 PM
  • FULL-TIME! And that's it! Another Champions League campaign over for Arsenal. A brave performance by the Gunners but they were comfortably second best to the cup holders, who were not a their best by any means.
