How Louis van Gaal’s team could use a George Best

The IndependentEven Louis van Gaal met his match when he faced arguably Manchester United’s most supreme footballing individualist. “I had the privilege to play against him and maybe it is a question for the quiz. I don’t tell what match,” the United manager said of George Best, the Old Trafford force of nature who died 10 years ago today.

Memphis Depay warned by Manchester United legend over return to form

The IndependentLouis van Gaal has called on Memphis Depay to maintain his form if he wants to win back his place in the Manchester United first team on a permanent basis, but a club legend has warned him that one good performance doesn’t make him great.

Max Allegri expects tough test against Manchester City

The IndependentThere is perhaps no greater contrast in this week’s Champions League fixtures than the reversal of fortune surrounding Manchester City and Juventus as they prepare to face off in Turin this Wednesday. When the two sides went head-to-head back in September, the former sat top of the Premier League with a perfect five wins from five games and were yet to concede a single goal, while the Bianconeri had yet to win a domestic fixture.

Jesse Lingard is an 'English Iniesta'

The IndependentJesse Lingard is an English version of Andres Iniesta, according to former Manchester United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen. The 22-year-old winger has recently established himself in manager Louis van Gaal’s side, playing in each of the last eight games and scoring his first goal for the club in the 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion. Following his recent good form, and after injuries to Jamie Vardy and Michael Carrick, Lingard was included in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for last week’s friendly against France.

Manchester City to design new circular badge

The IndependentManchester City are to change their club badge following consultation with their fans. In a press release on their official website, the club said that they have spent the past few weeks speaking with supporters to establish whether the current design should ‘evolve’. The present eagle-shaped badge, which has been in use since 1997, is based on one of the city's old heraldic symbols but it has long been unpopular with fans.

All you need to know ahead of Man Utd vs PSV

The IndependentIt’s a big game for… Hector Moreno: The centre-back was accused of being too aggressive in the tackle which saw Luke Shaw suffer a horrendous injury at the Philips Stadion as the visitors succumbed to a loss. Moreno was not reprimanded for the challenge, however it is likely that he will have to contend with a vociferous welcome from the United faithful. Best stat… 50: Memphis Depay scored a half-century in 124 appearances for PSV. Remember when…

Rooney and Martial return for Man United as Van Gaal gives Shaw update

The IndependentWayne Rooney and Anthony Martial will be fit to return to Manchester United’s squad for their Champions League tie with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, with Louis van Gaal’s side is likely to secure them a place in the last-16. United currently lead Group B by a point, and win over PSV at Old Trafford would take them out of the Dutch champions’ reach heading into the final round of group stage fixtures.

PSV fans to display special banner for Shaw at Old Trafford

The IndependentA classy move from PSV Eindhoven fans. The Dutch side's supporters will hold a banner tonight wishing Luke Shaw good luck in his recovery from a serious leg injury when they play Manchester United at Old Trafford. It was in the match between the two teams back in September when Shaw broke his leg after a tackle from PSV defender Hector Moreno. PSV won that game 2-1 at home. Shaw is expected to be sidelined for another four months at least with the injury, and it is touch and go whether he will play at the European championships for England next summer.
    11/25/2015 6:06:10 PM
Earlier, we brought you news of PSV's kind gesture to Luke Shaw, who suffered that horrific double leg fracture during United's away trip to Eindhoven when tackled by centre-back Hector Moreno.

Shaw, who is still recovering from the injury, has since tweeted to show his appreciation to the Dutch fans.

We'll see if Moreno can expect any similar good will from the Old Trafford crowd...
    11/25/2015 6:13:20 PM

Manuel Pellegrini has named his side to take on Juventus. There's still no Vincent Kompany or David Silva, but Nicolas Otamendi makes a welcome return to strengthen a defence which shipped four against Liverpool.

Manchester City: Hart, Sagna, Demichelis, Otamendi, Clichy, Fernando, Toure, Fernandinho, Navas, De Bruyne, Aguero

Caballero, Maffeo, Adarabioyo, Kolarov, Delph, Celina, Sterling
    11/25/2015 6:36:19 PM

Love him or hate him, Wayne Rooney returns.

I'm sure there will be a few Manchester United supporters considering how their team looked relatively dynamic against Watford on Saturday without the club captain leading the line.

Anthony Martial is also back - probably the most welcome of Louis van Gaal's four changes.

Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo replace Ashley Young and Phil Jones respectively.

Manchester United: De Gea, Darmian, Smalling, Rojo, Blind, Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Lingard, Rooney, Memphis, Martial

Substitutes: Romero, McNair, Young, Fellaini, Mata, Pereira, Wilson

    11/25/2015 6:49:57 PM
Tonight's other game in Group B has already finished, by the way.

CSKA Moscow took on Wolfsburg in a 5.00pm kick-off and the Bundesliga side ran out 2-0 winners. That puts more importance on United's game.

Wolfsburg now top the group with nine points. If Van Gaal's men fail to pick up three points tonight, they would travel to Volkswagen Arena needing a win.
    11/25/2015 7:24:53 PM

    Phillip Cocu

PSV's manager is Phillip Cocu, formerly of Barcelona fame.

In fact, the Dutchman played at Old Trafford for the Catalan giants on this day seventeen years ago.

Chapeau to anyone who can work out which club won the Champions League that season...
    11/25/2015 7:31:45 PM

    1 min:
We're underway at Old Trafford and in Turin.
Stay with us for live updates throughout tonight's action.
    11/25/2015 7:47:05 PM
3 min: Manchester United's first corner of the evening is won with some good work down the left by Memphis Depay, but Chris Smalling can't get his head to the ball from the set-piece.
    11/25/2015 7:49:26 PM
5 min: Bastian Schweinsteiger forces a first save out of Jeroen Zoet with a shot from distance but it doesn't trouble the 'keeper, who gathers the ball easily.
    11/25/2015 7:52:15 PM
7 min: On the tenth anniversary of George Best's death, a tribute comes from the Old Trafford crowd, who shine the lights on their smartphones a la MIddlesbrough fans last month and break into their special rendition of 'Spirit in the Sky'.

That chant, by the way, is probably the best in the league. I can't reprint the lyrics here but it's worth a Google.
    11/25/2015 7:56:20 PM
A song for George Best in the seventh minute on the 10th anniversary of his death. Flashlights all over the ground as well. Impressive sight
13 min: Meanwhile in Turin, a former United youth player is causing their local rivals problems.

Paul Pogba just delightfully back-heeled a ball into the path of Pablo Dybala, who should have put his side ahead, but he could only blaze over. Still 0-0.
    11/25/2015 8:01:03 PM
GOAL! Juventus 1-0 Manchester City (Mandzukic)

The home side take the lead in Turin. Alex Sandro's cross from the byline is tapped home by Mario Mandzukic and the goal stands, despite Nicolas Otamendi protesting that he had been fouled by the big striker.
    11/25/2015 8:05:23 PM
18 min: Good stuff from Matteo Darmian! His hard work down the wing allows him to fire the ball across goal in search of Wayne Rooney but PSV scramble the danger away for a corner.

The set-piece is half-cleared too but the ball's worked back inside for Lingard, who mistimes his overhead kick.
    11/25/2015 8:07:58 PM
21 min: Another United chance! Rooney cuts a low, quick pass across the box and it's begging for Anthony Martial to hit it. He doesn't, instead leaving it for the onrushing Lingard, who fluffs his lines when bearing down on Zoet.
    11/25/2015 8:09:19 PM
27 min: The Eredivisie champions are enjoying their best spell of possession so far but still struggling to make an impact.

Stopped clock twice a day and all that... Robbie Savage may have a point when he argues that Louis van Gaal doesn't need two defensive midfielders against a side that lacks any kind of attacking threat.
    11/25/2015 8:15:41 PM
29 min: So nearly the opener! Blind's corner flies towards the far post where Morgan Schneiderlin is waiting to tap home. He makes contact, but not nearly enough, and Zoet pounces on it before it crosses the white line.
    11/25/2015 8:17:20 PM
32 min: PSV chance! The Dutch side counter with alarming ease, cutting through the home side's midfield without any pressure applied.

They eventually work the ball to the edge of the box and Jorrit Hendrix unleashes a shot on goal that David De Gea does well to hold.
    11/25/2015 8:20:17 PM
35 min: PSV are very much growing in confidence. Brenet latches onto Memphis' misplaced pass and subsequently cuts through the United midfield, again with little resistance offered by those in red.

He wins a corner that De Gea misjudges but the referee's whistle saves United, following an infraction in the box.
    11/25/2015 8:23:29 PM
37 min: United chance! And it's fallen to Martial again. He receives possession in the inside-left channel and, for a second, it looks like a situation tailor-made for one of his open-body shots across the 'keeper.

He tries one, aiming for the far corner, but the outstretched leg of Zoet pushes the ball away from danger and allows PSV to clear.

Whisper it, but hotshot Anthony Martial is missing too many chances and is in need of goal.
    11/25/2015 8:25:30 PM
40 min: Schweinsteiger's missed tackle allows De Jong to emabrk on another mazy run through the middle of the park, bypassing every red shirt in his way.

His shot is weak and gathered by De Gea but United's lack of bite in the middle is worrying.
    11/25/2015 8:28:12 PM
41 min: At the other end, Schweinsteiger rises early to win a header in the box with Zoet stranded. It looks for a second as though a easy tap-in is on but the linesman's flag is up. Contentious call, at best.
    11/25/2015 8:30:32 PM
44 min: Over in Turin, Claudio Marchisio almost grants City a goal by playing a careless backpass straight into the path of Sergio Aguero. Fortunately for Juventus, Gianluigi Buffon is off his line quickly to deny the Argentinian.
    11/25/2015 8:31:57 PM
45 min: One last first-half chance for Manchester United from a corner comes to nothing. It's half-time here and in Italy.
    11/25/2015 8:32:39 PM

    Manchester United 0-0 PSV Eindhoven

    Juventus 1-0 Manchester City
    11/25/2015 8:32:55 PM

Watch Man United fans put on 'light show' to honour George Best

The IndependentManchester United supporters held a tribute for club legend George Best in the seventh minute of the Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven. Best, one of the club's greatest, died 10 years ago today and United fans held up torches and lights on their mobile phones to mark the occasion. The tribute happened in the seventh minute as Best was famous for wearing the No 7 shirt.
    11/25/2015 8:36:56 PM

Pogba wars special boots to commemorate Paris terror victims

The IndependentPaul Pogba was praised on social media after wearing custom boots as a tribute to the victims killed in the Paris terror attacks.  The Juventus midfielder wore the Tricolor on his Nike boots as a mark of respect to the 130 people who were killed in attacks across Paris on 13 November. Pogba was on the bench when bombs exploded outside the Stade de France as the French national team played Germany in a friendly. The gesture comes on the same night as Paris Saint-Germain wear special kits with the slogan 'Je Suis Paris' in place of their usual sponsorship
    11/25/2015 8:37:53 PM
Any changes at half-time that you'd make, Manchester United fans? Bear in mind that it looks as if Marouane Fellaini and Ashley Young are readying themselves to come on.

Memphis Depay, against his old club, certainly hasn't done much to warrant another 45 minutes.
    11/25/2015 8:43:44 PM

We're back under way at Old Trafford and in Turin. Can the Premier League's northern representatives turn it around in their respective second halves?
    11/25/2015 8:48:25 PM
46 min: United chance! Blind's corner, Schneiderlin's powerful header, Row J's catching practice. Should do better.
    11/25/2015 8:49:10 PM
48 min: Another United chance! Another United header, this time from Lingard, whose effort flashes wide after a cross from Martial out wide.
    11/25/2015 8:51:09 PM
51 min: Louis van Gaal's red and white army are very much on the front foot at the beginning of this half. There's more impetus about their play, even if they only look marginally closer to finding the breakthrough.
    11/25/2015 8:53:39 PM
53 min: PSV latch onto a misplaced pass by Chris Smalling and it leads to Luuk de Jong finding space to shoot. He blazes his effort over the bar but it's a warning sign.
    11/25/2015 8:56:44 PM
Manchester United sub: Marouane Fellaini ON, Bastian Schweinsteiger OFF
    11/25/2015 8:59:57 PM
Manchester United sub: Ashley Young ON, Memphis Depay OFF
    11/25/2015 9:00:16 PM
PSV Eindhoven sub: Jorrit Hendrix OFF, Nicolas Isimat-Mirin ON
    11/25/2015 9:01:55 PM
59 min: Will the changes spark life into United? We'll wait and see.

Hendrix is PSV's 'Substitute'. Shame that's a Who song.
    11/25/2015 9:03:18 PM
61 min: PSV chance! Superb show of skill from Propper, who keeps the ball in mid-air with three touches on the half-volley, before firing at De Gea's goal.

The Spaniard is comfortably behind his shot but the Dutchman's flair sent Old Trafford into a flutter for a second there.
    11/25/2015 9:05:17 PM
64 min: Predictably, with Fellaini on the field, United have started peppering PSV's penalty area with crosses from deep.

In order for that tactic to work though, you'd think they'd make sure the big Belgian was in the mixer. Instead, he's hanging around in midfield, much to chagrin of co-commentator Robbie Savage as well as the Old Trafford crowd.
    11/25/2015 9:08:59 PM
68 min: PSV break! Rooney's indecision allow Guardado to burst forward and the pacey Mexican switches the play to De Jong, who then plays in Locadia.

The Dutch side are 3-on-3, United are in real danger and the PSV frontman has options. He chooses to hopelessly fire wide.
    11/25/2015 9:12:20 PM
72 min: Just as they did in the first half, PSV are growing into the game. First Arias gets in behind the defence, only to see his cross blocked.

It's not long before the Dutch side have the ball back after robbing Schweinsteiger in midfield and Propper's powerful strike is palmed down by De Gea.
    11/25/2015 9:14:56 PM
74 min: Lingard should score! Big opportunity but the youngster can't take it.

He fires over on the half-volley, leaning too far back, after Ashley Young's hard work had allowed the ball to be clipped onto his right foot.

As impressive as the 22-year-old's been in recent weeks, his final product needs work.
    11/25/2015 9:16:45 PM
78 min: Can United find a goal? After Wolfsburg's win earlier, Van Gaal's men may well need a victory against the Bundesliga side when they visit them in a fortnight's time to ensure qualification.

Unless, that is, they break the deadlock here.
    11/25/2015 9:21:43 PM
79 min: Juan Mata's been sent to jog down the touchline. His imminent introduction will not stop a few hundred home fans from heading for the exits. Another uninspiring night of football at Old Trafford so far.
    11/25/2015 9:23:53 PM
80 min: It's still Juventus 1-0 Manchester City in Turin. Interestingly, Joe Hart has been replaced there, with Willy Caballero joining in for the last ten minutes.
    11/25/2015 9:25:20 PM
81 min: My word, Marouane Fellaini. He meets the ball at the back post but somehow manages the volley it behind him.

In fairness, he seemed to be having his shirt pulled but it invited a lot of groans from those left in Old Trafford.
    11/25/2015 9:26:39 PM
Manchester United sub: Juan Mata ON, Matteo Darmian OFF
    11/25/2015 9:26:55 PM
87 min: Usually, you'd expect a team to go hell for leather in search of a goal in situations like these. Nobody, however, who's watched Louis van Gaal's Manchester United regularly should be surprised at its pedestrian pace, even in these closing stages.

This team simply isn't built to go for broke. That's ironic, because more and more often nowadays, they need to.
    11/25/2015 9:32:07 PM

    Three minutes added time
    11/25/2015 9:32:53 PM
90+1min: Even now, PSV are looking the more likely. They've had an extended spell of possession on the halfway line but their attempts to play the ball in behind United's backline aren't paying off.
    11/25/2015 9:34:39 PM

    Manchester United 0-0 PSV Eindhoven

    Juventus 1-0 Manchester City
    11/25/2015 9:35:39 PM
What to say about that? An uninspiring night of Champions League action from both clubs but particularly Manchester United, who lacked ambition and purpose, despite qualification offered to them on a plate.

PSV, while dangerous, posed little threat for much of the game but United barely attempted to take advantage. Some might blame Jesse Lingard for his miss. He should've scored but, at the same time, it shouldn't have been the one clear opportunity created by the home side.
