Welcome to The Independent's live coverage of tonight's Champions League Group A match between Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen at Old Trafford.

Follow the latest news and updates below...
  • Full-Time: Manchester United 4 (Rooney 2, van Persie, Valencia) Bayer Leverkusen 2 (Rolfes, Toprak)
    • Wayne Rooney gives United the lead after 21 minutes although Valencia is definitely in an offside position
    • Rolfes curling effort  for Leverkusen equalises early in the second half, but van Persie restores United's lead with a good volley
    • Rooney adds his second and his 200th for United to extend the lead after 70 minutes; Valencia finishes a brilliant counter attack to add a fourth
    • Manchester City beat Viktoria Plzen 3-0 thanks to goals from Eden Dzeko, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero

  • 70 mins: If you were going to demonstrate the perfect counter attack, that was it. Young broke away down the left, and did well to find Rooney in the middle of the park. He drew Boenisch and Spahic, before slipping a pass through to Valencia, and the winger smashed it first time to Leno's left to increase the lead. Brilliant.
    9/17/2013 8:21:21 PM
  • 81 mins: Fellaini has gone off, his job done, and Tom Cleverley has come on in his place. United still pressing, and they have a corner.
    9/17/2013 8:22:44 PM
  • 82 mins: It comes out to Valencia, who needs no encouragement to shoot from range. It deflects for another corner, and Evra gets up for a leaping header which eventually comes to Rooney. The hat-trick? Not quite, as his looping effort is saved by Leno.
    9/17/2013 8:23:59 PM
  • 84 mins: No hat-trick for Rooney, as he's replaced by Javier Hernandez. Rooney gets a huge reception as he leaves, and he laps up every second of the applause. Transfer request? What transfer request...
    9/17/2013 8:25:30 PM
  • Van Persie's acrobatic effort for United's second goal

    9/17/2013 8:26:28 PM
  • 86 mins: United are just going through the motions now, keeping hold of the ball as Leverkusen know they're beat.
    9/17/2013 8:26:50 PM
  • 87 mins: Credit to the German side, they're still pushing forward through Bender and Reinartz. Ferdinand needlessly gives away a corner when there wasn't an attacker near him. De Gea comes out swinging again...he misses...GOAL TO BAYER LEVERKUSEN!
    9/17/2013 8:28:53 PM
  • The unlikeliest of comebacks? The corner is cracked against the bar, and Toprak heads in the rebound for a consolation.
    9/17/2013 8:29:32 PM
  • 89 mins: Chance for van Persie...NO! Valencia fires a cross past Leno from the right, giving van Persie a simple tap-in, but he somehow manages to put it wide with the goal at his mercy. he is human after all.
    9/17/2013 8:30:46 PM
  • 90+1 mins: Three minutes added time, and the first sees Can fire high over the bar from outside the area. Leverkusen fans still singing, United fans leaving quickly, you'd think the home side were losing!
    9/17/2013 8:32:09 PM
  • 90+2 mins: Young, van Persie and Cleverley combine nicely to keep the ball alive, but Hernandez loses a possesion and there's a late chance for Leverkusen. They're probing for a way into the box, but De Gea comes out to claim a Reinartz cross.
    9/17/2013 8:33:44 PM
  • 90+3 mins: That's it! Manchester United run out comfortable 4-2 winners!
    9/17/2013 8:34:27 PM
  • An easy win in the end for David Moyes' side, and after all the hype in the build-up to the match, he will be delighted to come away with four goals, three points and the Group A lead. They certainly made hard work of it in the first half, but some of the old Manchester United swagger started to return in the second half as they began to cut loose.
    9/17/2013 8:36:51 PM
  • What will really have Moyes pleased though is how comfortable and happy Wayne Rooney looked. The smile was back, the goals continued, and he was even able to bring him off towards the end to a rousing reception in preparation for the Manchester derby on Sunday afternoon.
    9/17/2013 8:38:04 PM
  • Leverkusen didn't pose too many problems up front, with Kiessling practically non-existent until he went off. That might concern Moyes though, as to how they conceded twice when they were faced with very little threat from the Leverkusen attack. De Gea didn't have the best of games, and was certainly at fault for the second, although the first he could do little about the deflection.
    9/17/2013 8:40:03 PM
  • Elsewhere, Manchester City have won 3-0 against Viktoria Plzen thanks to second half goals from Edin Dzeko, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero. They sit second in Group D though, as Bayern Munich have beaten CSKA Moscow by the same scoreline, with goals fro David Alaba, Mario Mandzukic and Arjen Robben seeing them home. In United's group, Shakhtar Donetsk ran out 2-0 winners against Real Sociedad with a double from Alex Teixeira.
    9/17/2013 8:45:26 PM
  • In Group B, Juventus managed to equalise against FC Copenhagen thanks to Fabio Quagliarella, while Real Madrid ran out 6-1 winners against Galatasaray, with a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick, a Karim Benzema double and a goal from Isco seeing off Umut Bulut's consolation. Group C has seen PSG beat Olympiakos 4-1 away with Edinson Cavani, Marquinhos and a Thiago Motta double seeing them home, although Zlatan Ibrahimovic did miss a penalty, and in the final match, Benfica beat Anderlecht 2-0 thanks to Filip Djuricic and Luisao.
