  • Barcelona's only hope is to repeat the Bayern Munich battering of 2009 according to The Independent's Pete Jenson...

  • Barcelona are apparently 'convinced' they can make a comeback according to boss Tito Vilanova...

We believe we can fight back, it's our obligation and we're convinced (it's possible).

We know that it will be very difficult, but we are Barca and we can never give up on a tie, especially when we have 90 minutes to play at home.

We have to hold our heads high if we are eliminated. We cannot give up, we need to make our fans proud.

    • Last time Barcelona progressed following a first leg semi-final defeat in Europe was in 1986 against Gothenburg. The Catalans lost 3-0 in Sweden but recovered at the Nou Camp to force a penalty shoot-out, which they won.

    • Barcelona have won just once in seven competitive matches against Bayern Munich
    • Lionel Messi has scored 12 of his 59 Champions League goals against German opposition
    • Bayern Munich are the competition’s top scorers (alongside Real Madrid) with 26 goals

  • Can Messi inspire Barcelona tonight? Here we look at their greatest comebacks in Europe:

    Part one...

Their first major comeback was in the Uefa Cup in 1977 against Bobby Robson’s Ipswich Town as the Spanish side suffered a 3-0 first-leg loss at Portman Road. Two goals from Dutch and Catalan icon Johan Cruyff helped Barça to a 3-0 second-leg home win before eventually prevailing on penalties.

  • The teams for tonight are out...

Lionel Messi will start the game on the bench despite Barcelona needing goals. Alex Song does start, presumably not as a striker as the Catalan side make four changes from first leg. Bayern replace Dante and Mario Gomez - who are one yellow away from missing the final - with Daniel van Buyten and Mario Mandzukic.

Barcelona starting XI:  Valdes, Dani Alves, Pique, Bartra, Adriano, Xavi, Song, Iniesta, Villa, Fabregas, Pedro

Bayern Munich XI: Neuer, Lahm, Boateng, Van Buyten, Alaba, Javi Martinez, Schweinsteiger, Robben, Muller, Ribery, Mandzukic
    5/1/2013 5:53:22 PM
  • Bayern players Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Javi Martinez and Luiz Gustavo all need to avoid a yellow card or they will miss the final.

  • Barcelona's greatest comebacks in Europe:

    Part two...

The Catalans recovered from a 3-0 reverse in Brussels in the 1978-79 Cup-Winners' Cup against Anderlecht to win the second-leg by the same score and eventually triumph on penalties.
    5/1/2013 6:04:55 PM
  • Barcelona's greatest comebacks in Europe:

    Part three...

Barca once again found themselves 3-0 down from the first-leg, this time in

their European Cup semi-final against Gothenburg in 1986 but a Pichi Alonso
hat-trick gave them a 3-0 win on the night to level the scores on aggregate
before another penalty shoot-out success under manager Terry Venables.

  • Some reaction to the shock news that Messi only starts on the bench for Barcelona:

    5/1/2013 6:13:57 PM
  • DID YOU KNOW....

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes was in charge of the Borussia Monchengladbach team which surrendered a four-goal first-leg lead to lose against Real Madrid in the third round of the Uefa Cup in 1985.
