  • Hello and welcome to The Independent's live coverage of today's Premier League action with me, Marc Williams.

Well, last weekend the action was back with a bang, wasn't it? Manchester United's woes continued under new boss Louis van Gaal, Chelsea and Manchester City proved that they'll be the teams to chase for the title and new boys Leicester showed that they will not be push overs in the top league.

We had goals, red cards, controversy, upsets, new stars shining, old hands still at their best, everything that we've been carving this long hot summer ever since the World Cup came and went.

Onto the second weekend of action we go and it's sure to be another goodun!

Chelsea face their second newly promoted team in as many weekends in Leicester, managerless Crystal Palace meet their London rivals West Ham and fourth place is 'up for grabs' when Everton and Arsenal do battle.

With Aston Villa v Newcastle as today's early kick-off, let's dive straight into the footy!

Villa Park is looking glorious this morning!

    8/23/2014 11:03:11 AM

  • Chelsea v Leicester

These days whenever Chelsea play, many eyes turn to their Belgian star Eden Hazard. He was superb last season, scoring goals with ease and playing with flare and excitement.

This season could be a difficult one, though. He has to continue his good work and secure his place among the world's elite players or he could be another one to not quite make the jump to superstardom.

Our man Teddy Cutler spoke with Chelsea's flying winger about all things World Cup, this coming season and the pressures the young man faces.

Last season was Hazard’s coming-out party; the year when he partially uncloaked himself as a world-class star. This time around, the expectations have been ramped up. The 23-year-old must, along with the likes of Diego Costa, share the brunt of Chelsea’s attack.

Don't forget the match preview for our early game today, now just about 25 minutes away!
    8/23/2014 11:21:17 AM

  • Crystal Palace v West Ham

Palace are still without a manager and it's all very strange, isn't it?

Tony Pulis' exit is still unexplained and now we've had the whole Malky Mackay text gate to deal with. Palace fans must be pulling their hair out right about now.

Saying that, their team more than held up their own against Arsenal last weekend and nearly took a point off last season's FA Cup winners.

As it was, they left empty handed and now have another London derby to deal with - West Ham visit Selhurst today.

Keith Millen will be in charge but Glenn Moore takes a closer look into what's going on in South London...

Malky Mackay broke cover to make a grovelling apology for what he described as “three texts out of 10,000 that were completely unacceptable and inappropriate” before insisting that when it came to transfers he was “100 per cent confident” he would be cleared of “any wrong-doing”.

    8/23/2014 11:27:11 AM

  • Chelsea v Leicester

Before we get to today's early kick-off, let's have a look at another intriguing game today.

Chelsea, many people's favourite for the title, meet newly promoted Leicester.

The Foxes' boss, Nigel Pearson, says he's players are not fazed by facing Chelsea's sea of stars this afternoon and, giving their superb point against Everton last weekend, they have no need to be nervous.

“I spoke to the players and they were all really looking forward to it,” Pearson said. “That for me is the key thing. The players saw [the fixtures] and were not fazed.

    8/23/2014 11:35:10 AM
  • Today's action is all set to get underway then. The warm ups are done at Villa Park and time for Aston Villa and Newcastle to kick off another packed weekend of Premier League action.

These two had vastly different starts to their seasons. Villa claimed their first away win since New Years Day by beating Stoke while Newcastle were swept aside by Manchester City at St James'.

Villa don't do back-to-back wins in the league but they surely have a great chance of doing so today.

Alan Pardew's men need to get their season going or the wolves could start to gather, even at this early stage.

    Kick-off is just minutes away!

Newcastle: Krul, Janmaat, Coloccini, Dummett, Williamson, Colback, Cabella, Anita, Gouffran, Sissoko, Riviere

    8/23/2014 11:44:45 AM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0: The Toon army get us going, game on!
    8/23/2014 11:46:24 AM
  • We'll be keeping a close eye on today's early game but also bring you all the latest news around the Premier League today and the team news from the 3pm kick-offs as soon as they are announced!
    8/23/2014 11:47:41 AM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

4 min: Confident start from the home side here and why not! Villa were very good last weekend at Stoke and the fans are reflecting that today - some noise, obviously not a lot of Friday night hangovers! Gabi Agbonlahor draws and good block from Mike Williamson as Villa pour forward in the best of the early action.
    8/23/2014 11:52:40 AM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

9 min: For all this injuries and woes, there is still a half decent player lurking within Charles N'Zogbia. The winger gets to the back post and heads at goal. His effort floats just over the bar but that was good from Villa. Straight from the goal kick, Cissokho flies forward down the left and draws a good claim from Tim Krul.
    8/23/2014 11:58:04 AM
  • He's back!

Is this the best news you've heard all week? Mario is back! Thank you Liverpool!

Tim Rich looks into what the Italian will bring to his new club, both good and bad...

When Balotelli is unveiled as the replacement for Luis Suarez, Rodgers will have to explain why he “categorically ruled out” a move for Balotelli during Liverpool’s summer tour of the United States. He is likely to respond that much has changed in a month.

    8/23/2014 12:10:19 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

24 min: At Villa Park N'Zogbia goes close with a curling free-kick just just past Kurl's left hand post and Newcastle are starting to string together some nice moves. It's an interesting, even game, this one!
    8/23/2014 12:11:47 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

26 min: Lots and lots of pressure coming from the home side and it takes another fantastic block to keep them at bay. Wiemann, Villa scorer last weekend, controls and swivels on the penalty spot, fires at goal but Janmaat gets his body in the way.
    8/23/2014 12:13:45 PM
  • Chelsea v Leicester

Ahead of today's game, Jose Mourinho has said that his centre-back, Gary Cahill, has everything it takes to become England captain.

    Read all about it here.

    8/23/2014 12:15:10 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

30 min: Roy Hogdson, England boss, is in the house, he's got a cracking suit on too! Gabi Agbonlahor, one to watch for Roy perhaps, tries to get the game's tempo going but is stopped in his tracks. Up the other end, Newcastle's Cabella and Riviere combine to draw a smart save from Brad Guzan.
    8/23/2014 12:18:43 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

35 min: It has to be said, despite some bright moves from Villa and the odd Newcastle chance on the counter, this game hasn't quite come to life yet.

At least Newcastle have managed a shoot on target today...

    8/23/2014 12:21:01 PM

  • Crystal Palace v West Ham

The Malky Mackay text gate rumbles on and now we have further developments in the saga.

Read the latest here. Managerless Palace face the Hammers at 3pm today.

On Saturday the Daily Mail published details of four further messages. One of those, it is claimed by the newspaper, makes a racist reference to Cardiff's Malaysian owner Vincent Tan. The other three are of a sexist and homophobic nature, it is alleged.

    8/23/2014 12:24:35 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

38 min: A lot of Villa's best stuff so far is coming from Agbonlahor and he comes close to connecting with a cross from the left. A hint of offside, yes, but the striker misses it anyway and the ball trickles out for a goal kick. Villa fans, look at the table now, you're top!!
    8/23/2014 12:27:16 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

43 min: The heavens have opened here and all of a sudden it's pouring down, obviously someone up there isn't enjoy this one too much. Into the last knockings of the first half we go.
    8/23/2014 12:31:20 PM
  • HALF TIME! Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

That'll do it for the first 45 minutes then, not much to tell between these two, Villa probably just shading it but they've failed to hit the target yet.

Coloccini and Delph fight for the ball

    8/23/2014 12:33:48 PM
  • Limited chances in the first half from Villa Park but some enjoyable football being played none the less.

Do you reckon the onlooking Roy Hodgson is a pie and pint man at half time? No, me neither.

As well as the action from the early kick-off, we'll have plenty of team news from our four 3pm kick offs on the way.
    8/23/2014 12:37:48 PM
  • Night fever?

    8/23/2014 12:40:05 PM

  • Crystal Palace v West Ham

All the talk before this game as been about the vacant manager post at Palace and rightly so.

Tim Sherwood, Independent columnist,  has he's say about the bizarre events of the past week or so.

Either way, I was not holding my breath about getting the job, and so it turned out. After seeing Steve and I asked people who knew Palace well about the club. Their immediate response was that they could not put me off the job. The feeling was that Palace was a good club and that the best thing about it was the current group of players, as well as the fans.

    8/23/2014 12:44:17 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

Our man Simon Hart at Villa Park has his say on the first half.

No goals at Villa Park after a low-key first half. Newcastle have had the two best chances but Yoan Gouffran missed his kick at the far post from a corner, and Remy Cabella slipped when shooting from 15 yards.

    8/23/2014 12:47:24 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

45 min: Villa get the game going again and the sunshine is back out, happy days.

Gouffran in action in the first half

    8/23/2014 12:48:32 PM
  • Plenty going on around the Premier League today, enjoy the best of it here...

    8/23/2014 12:50:54 PM
  • Daryl Janmaat has got some bottle!

    8/23/2014 12:51:43 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

50 min: We have the first yellow card of the game and it goes to probably the best player on the pitch so far, Charles N'Zogbia. He is a bit rash to be honest and referee Mike Dean is called into action. From that foul, Newcastle stream forward and Daryl Janmaat is unmarked in the box but he's flying head goes out for a corner.
    8/23/2014 12:53:41 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

54 min: Real lack of pace and tempo in this game, all a bit dull if I'm honest. There's some quality on the bench, though, and it won't be long until the managers decide to dip into their reserves if it stays like this.
    8/23/2014 12:57:32 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

56 min: That's more like it! Daryl Janmaat, Newcastle's Dutch summer signing, finally gets the crowd going, the away end that is. The full-back cuts in from the right and let's fly at goal from all of 25 yards. He's effort flashes just wide of were the post meets the crossbar. Guzan would have been beaten had that been a inch lower and an inch to the right.
    8/23/2014 12:59:57 PM
  • As we have the time, still goalless at Villa Park but you knew that, have a look at some transfer news this lunch time. Is Torres on his way?

    8/23/2014 1:01:51 PM
  • Elsewhere, there's friction in Spain and it's all about an Angel!

    8/23/2014 1:02:43 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

63 min: New Colombian signing, Carlos Sanchez, is on for Villa and greeted by a huge roar from the home faithful. He gets right into the action to help win them a corner and Krul does well to get rid of the dangerous ball in.
    8/23/2014 1:07:06 PM
  • Chelsea v Leicester

Team news: We've got the teams from Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea: Courtois, Ivanovic, Azpilicueta, Terry, Cahill, Fabregas, Schurrle, Matic, Hazard, Oscar, Costa

Subs: Cech, Luis, Zouma, Ramires, Drogba, Mikel, Willian

Leicester: Schmeichel, de Laet, Konchesky, King, Morgan, Moore, Mahrez, Hammond, Ulloa, Nugent, Schlupp

Subs: Albrighton, Hamer, Hopper, Taylor-Fletcher, Knockaert, Wasilewski, Wood
    8/23/2014 1:10:26 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

69 min: Philippe Senderos goes into the book after a nasty foul and is joined by Andreas Weimann soon after. For the away side, Siem de Jong is on for Vurnon Anita and the away fans like that sub. Into the final 20 minutes we go..
    8/23/2014 1:12:46 PM
  • Crystal Palace v West Ham

Team news: Roll up, roll up, get your team news from Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace: Speroni, Kelly, Ward, Ledley, Hangeland, Delaney, Bannan, Jedinak, Campbell, Chamakh, Bolasie

Subs: Mariappa, McCarthy, O'Keefe, Hennessey, Gayle, Murray, Williams

West Ham: Adrian, O'Brien, Cresswell, Noble, Reid, Tomkins, Vaz Te, Kouyate, Cole, Zarate, Downing

Subs: Morrison, Sakho, Demel, Diame, Jaaskelainen, Poyet, Valencia
    8/23/2014 1:16:05 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

74 min: All action from Alan Hutton today and the Scotsman wins the home side a free-kick in a good position. Before that is taken, Paul Lambert brings on Darren Bent, can he provide the spark? Well not from that free-kick, that's for sure - the ball flies out off Senderos' head.

    Love the magic spray!

    8/23/2014 1:19:09 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

77 min: Alan Pardew makes his second sub of the afternoon too and brings on Gutierrez for Riviere. Villa are yet to hit the target today but Darren Bent comes close as he flicks an effort just over, he was offside anyway.
    8/23/2014 1:21:09 PM
  • Southampton v West Brom

Team news: Here's the line-ups from St Mary's, enjoy!

Southampton: Forster, Clyne, Yoshida, Fonte, Bertrand, Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Tadic, Ward-Prowse, Davis, Pelle

Subs: Davis, Gardos, Long, Taider, Cork, Hooiveld, Isgrove

West Brom: Foster, Dawson, Olsson, Pocognoli, Wisdom, Dorrans, Gardner, Brunt, Mulumbu, Anichebe, Berahino

Subs: Baird, Yacob, Ideye, Myhill, Davidson, McAuley, Sessegnon
    8/23/2014 1:24:09 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

83 min: It does look like we're heading for a goalless draw but Cabella tries his best to change that but his effort goes wide. Carlos Sanchez is welcomed to England by Mike Dean with a yellow card. All the stats would suggest Newcastle deserve a win here, can they find it?

Daryl Janmaat has been good this afternoon

    8/23/2014 1:27:54 PM
  • Swansea v Burnley

Team news: Who's playing at the Liberty this afternoon? Here's who!

Swansea: Fabianski, Rangel, Taylor, Ki, Williams, Amat, Dyer, Shelvey, Bony, Sigurdsson, Routledge

Subs: Gomis, Tiendalli, Montero, Termmel, Bartley, Richards, Sheehan

Burnley: Heaten, Trippier, Mee, Marney, Duff, Shackell, Arfield, Jones, Jutkiewicz, Ings, Taylor

Subs: Wallace, Kightly, Sordell, Reid, Gilks, Ward, Barnes
    8/23/2014 1:31:14 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

88 min: Siem de Jong had the chance to win it for his new side there but waste a great chance! The new boy is set free through the middle and unleashing a powerful shot but it is straight at Guzan and he can beat it wide.
    8/23/2014 1:32:21 PM
  • RED CARD! Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

90 min: Newcastle are down to ten for the last few minutes. Mike Williamson picks up two silly, cheap yellow cards in just five minutes and he is off for a slightly early bath. Can Villa capitalise?

    8/23/2014 1:33:59 PM
  • Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0

90+2 min: That red card might have come too late for Villa to make it count but they are looking to nick it. Alan Hutton has been very good today and he is man-of-the-match.
