ENGLAND - Cook (c), Root, Trott, Pietersen, Bell, Prior (wk), Woakes, Broad, Swann, Anderson, Kerrigan

AUSTRALIA - Rogers, Warner, Watson, Clarke (c), Smith, Haddin (wk), Faulkner, Starc, Siddle, Harris, Lyon
    8/23/2013 9:24:09 AM
  • England 116/1 (Root 68, Trott 12)
Faulkner concedes his first run for three overs before Siddle runs in once more from the Pavilion End - Root clipping him away down to long leg for a couple to just about keep England's score moving along.

  • WICKET! Root c Watson b Lyon - 68
Oh dear. That's a disappointing end to Root's innings. He tries to sweep Lyon and just gets a top edge to Shane Watson at short fine leg. Australia needed that wicket.
    8/23/2013 1:21:53 PM
  • England 118/2 (Trott 14, Pietersen 0)
Just what the doctor ordered for Australia, a wicket maiden from Lyon. England have an all South African duo at the crease now.
    8/23/2013 1:28:03 PM
  • England 119/2 (Trott 15, Pietersen 0)
Starc continues and a Trott single brings KP on strike but he can't get off the mark and sees off the rest of the over. Pietersen has five Test hundreds at The Oval and England could really do with him making another here.
    8/23/2013 1:31:40 PM
  • England 123/2 (Trott 15, Pietersen 4)
Lyon bowls out a maiden to Johannes Trott and then Pietersen gets off the mark in some style, driving Starc hard past mid off for four. Super shot that gets an appreciative roar from the crowd.
    8/23/2013 1:38:03 PM
  • England 123/2 (Trott 15, Pietersen 4)
It's maiden o'clock at the moment as both Lyon and Starc send down six dot balls each. The sun has gone in and there is a bit of a post-lunch lull.
    8/23/2013 1:47:45 PM
  • REVIEW - Great bit of fielding to hit the stumps as Pietersen scampers a single, but the England man is safely in his ground.
    8/23/2013 1:52:16 PM
  • DRINKS: England 132/2 (Trott 22, Pietersen 6)
Predictably now Pietersen is at the crease, England's run rate has picked up a bit although mostly in scampered Trott singles actually.
    8/23/2013 1:56:11 PM
  • England 136/2 (Trott 26, Pietersen 6)
Whatever Trott had to drink in the break seems to have done the trick because he has his first boundary for 78 balls, clipping Harris away. Pietersen is then fortunate to get away with an inside edge off Lyon that flies through Steve Smith's hands at short leg - a difficult chance, it would have been a fantastic reaction catch.
    8/23/2013 2:06:47 PM

  • Joe Root departs for 68
by Charles Reynolds on Aug 23, 2013 at 2:10 PM

    8/23/2013 2:11:28 PM
  • England 142/2 (Trott 29, Pietersen 9)
This is some good bowling from Lyon who has Pietersen in a bit of trouble here, an edge flying wide of Smith at short leg once again and a half-hearted LBW shot coming from the over.
    8/23/2013 2:14:02 PM
  • England 142/2 (Trott 29, Pietersen 9)
Ryan Harris continues to bowl well here, that's a maiden to Trott so Pietersen will be on strike for Lyon's over once again.
    8/23/2013 2:15:57 PM
  • England 145/2 (Trott 29, Pietersen 12)
Pietersen is a lucky boy there once again as he attempts a foolish single but Warner misses his throw which would have seen the England man out by miles.
    8/23/2013 2:21:19 PM
  • England 149/2 (Trott 29, Pietersen 16)
Crowd starting to get a bit frustrated with England's slow scoring rate here. Shouts of 'Get on with it'...
    8/23/2013 2:28:39 PM
  • England 149/2 (Trott 29, Pietersen 16)
Perhaps sensing that Pietersen won't enjoy being bogged down, Clarke introduces Steve Smith to try and tempt him into something stupid but the England man resists and blocks out a maiden.
    8/23/2013 2:31:07 PM
  • England 150/2 (Trott 30, Pietersen 16)
Ironically enthusiastic cheers greet the Trott single that brings up England's 150 - the home side are absolutely crawling along here.
    8/23/2013 2:34:07 PM
  •  England 163/2 (Trott 34, Pietersen 25)
Apologies for the interruption my laptop apparently got so bored it decided to stop working. In the mean time England have actually managed to hit a boundary! However it wasn't exactly convincing - a shot from Pietersen aimed over midwicket but taking a leading edge and flying over the bowler's head for four.
    8/23/2013 2:52:14 PM
  •  England 174/2 (Trott 39, Pietersen 27)
That's more like it! Smith serves up a half-tracker and Trott has no problem pulling it away through the gap in the field to the midwicket boundary.

    8/23/2013 2:57:19 PM
    8/23/2013 3:01:24 PM
  • REVIEW! Trott given out LBW - he reviews
    8/23/2013 3:02:08 PM
  • WICKET! Trott LBW Starc - 40
That's out! The ball was hitting the top of leg stump and Trott's fairly grim innings is at an end.
    8/23/2013 3:02:48 PM
  •  England 180/3 (Pietersen 28, Bell 4)
Well that's livened things up a bit... Starc strikes with the first ball with the new ball and then there's a bit of aggro between Pietersen and some of the Australian players about something but not quite sure what - the umpires step in to have a word.

    8/23/2013 3:33:44 PM
  • England 181/3 (Pietersen 29, Bell 4)
Starc to Pietersen to start things off after Tea. It's a maiden but not because it's particularly well bowled, just there's not much for the batsman to hit - apart from the wide one that he doesn't get hold of at all that dribbles off the toe of his bat, much to KP's obvious annoyance.
    8/23/2013 3:38:54 PM
  • England 187/3 (Pietersen 34, Bell 5)
Harris from the Pavilion End and Pietersen has four, tucking a short ball away very fine with a fairly delicate hook shot.
    8/23/2013 3:42:52 PM
  • England 188/3 (Pietersen 35, Bell 5)
Single to KP from the first ball of Starc's over before the left-armer beats Bell with an absolute beauty of a delivery that just shaped in a fraction.

    8/23/2013 3:55:30 PM
  • England 196/3 (Pietersen 38, Bell 6)
Nathan Lyon comes into the attack for Ryan Harris and there are cheers as England pick up a boundary - albeit four byes as the ball spins past everyone and runs away past Haddin to the boundary.
    8/23/2013 3:59:38 PM
  • England 197/3 (Pietersen 38, Bell 7)
England plodding along once more, this is rather enjoyable in a sickeningly grim sort of way, Ian Bell just adding a single.
    8/23/2013 4:04:33 PM
  • England 200/3 (Pietersen 39, Bell 9)
Steady... England manage to pick up three runs from the over and take their score up to 200. At this rate they will overhaul Australia's total 18.2 overs into the final day's play.
    8/23/2013 4:09:00 PM
  • England 201/3 (Pietersen 40, Bell 9)
Peter Siddle comes into the attack and it's a maiden while Pietersen takes the outlandish step of picking up a single from Lyon's over although Bell soon rectifies things by blocking the remaining five balls out.

  • The Maasai Warriors cricket team are in attendance today
by Charles Reynolds on Aug 23, 2013 at 4:16 PM

    8/23/2013 4:17:55 PM
  • England 203/3 (Pietersen 42, Bell 9)
Huge cheers go up as Pietersen gets a run from Siddle's over before casually adding another from Lyon's over. England advancing on 205 with some purpose.
    8/23/2013 4:21:27 PM
  • England 204/3 (Pietersen 43, Bell 9)
James Faulkner comes into the attack and Pietersen keeps his relentless assault going - mercilessly picking up another single.
    8/23/2013 4:26:10 PM
  • REVIEW! Pietersen not given LBW but Australia review it...
    8/23/2013 4:30:12 PM
  • NOT OUT! Hit Pietersen outside the line of off stump. Australia have no reviews left
    8/23/2013 4:30:37 PM
  • England 206/3 (Pietersen 44, Bell 10)
Phew. After the thrills of the last over which had TWO runs in it and a review, Faulkner calms things down a bit with a maiden.
    8/23/2013 4:36:01 PM

  • this is confusing... is it your laptop or the England cricket team that has broken?benhjAug 23, 2013 at 9:37 AM
    Well played sir, well played.
    8/23/2013 4:38:23 PM

  • One highlight of the afternoon was KP getting angry with a policeman moving behind the bowler's arm
by Charles Reynolds on Aug 23, 2013 at 4:41 PM

    8/23/2013 4:42:07 PM
  • 50 for Kevin Pietersen!
    8/23/2013 4:43:17 PM
  • England 213/3 (Pietersen 50, Bell 11)
Not only did that over produce a boundary, but it was a four that brings up Pietersen's 50 - his second slowest in Tests. However true to the form of this evening session, it wasn't a very convincing way to pick up four, he under-edged a pull shot and it just bounced over the stumps and ran away for four.
    8/23/2013 4:46:57 PM
  • England 217/3 (Pietersen 50, Bell 15)
A boundary! A proper boundary! Siddle drops short and Ian Bell majestically pulls him away through midwicket for a well struck four. England racing towards 220.
    8/23/2013 4:53:42 PM
  • WICKET! Pietersen c Watson b Starc - 50
Oh no. Pietersen plays a jab at a wide one outside off stump and it takes an edge to first slip. The umpires had to check it wasn't a bump ball but their review doesn't save Pietersen.
    8/23/2013 4:55:24 PM
  • England 221/4 (Bell 15, Woakes 4)
Suddenly it's all go, Starc gets Pietersen and then Woakes comes out and creams his first ball in Test cricket away for four with an excellent square-ish cover drive.
    8/23/2013 4:59:30 PM

  • this is doing wonders for the Aussie bowlers economy stats... might help any IPL contractsFLamAug 23, 2013 at 9:59 AM

    8/23/2013 4:59:55 PM
  • England 229/4 (Bell 19, Woakes 8)
This is getting out of hand now. England take seven from the over as Bell drives slightly riskily for three and then Woakes has his second boundary, clipping Starc down to fine leg for four.

    8/23/2013 5:08:05 PM
  • England 238/4 (Bell 22, Woakes 13)
Chris Woakes was seemingly only scoring in boundaries, punching a great shot past mid off, but then he spoilt it by just tucking a single down to long leg before Bell adds a single of his own. The two Warwickshire boys going quite well together.
    8/23/2013 5:21:24 PM

  • Woakes is off the mark in style
by Charles Reynolds on Aug 23, 2013 at 5:23 PM

    8/23/2013 5:23:35 PM
  • England 242/4 (Bell 26, Woakes 13)
Ian Bell refuses to be outdone by his county teammate and plays an elegant cover drive of his own for four. Lovely shot.
    8/23/2013 5:27:30 PM
  • England 245/4 (Bell 29, Woakes 13)
Lyon sends down a maiden to Woakes before Ian Bell has three runs driving crisply once more from Faulkner.
    8/23/2013 5:33:50 PM
  • England 245/4 (Bell 29, Woakes 13)
Lyon might have sent down another maiden but one of the biggest roars all day goes up from the crowd as two separate 'beer snakes' are joined together in the stand to my right.
    8/23/2013 5:35:56 PM
  • England 245/4 (Bell 29, Woakes 13)
Steve Smith is brought into the attack - presumably to avoid play stopping for bad light - and it's a maiden. In beer snake news the large one away to my right has more than doubled in size.
    8/23/2013 5:39:39 PM
  • England 245/4 (Bell 29, Woakes 13)
While the beer snake has now stretched to the entire width of one of the sections of the stand (about 40ft) - England have seen off three consecutive maidens. This is really attritional stuff.
    8/23/2013 5:47:56 PM
  • England 246/4 (Bell 29, Woakes 14)
Woakes sends the crowd into raptures by hitting Smith for a single, driving the ball to deep cover. There will be just one over more in the day.
    8/23/2013 5:49:24 PM
  • England 247/4 (Bell 29, Woakes 15)
Just a single from the final over to Woakes and that will end the day.
    8/23/2013 5:52:57 PM
    8/23/2013 5:53:11 PM
  • That's all from me today - I hope you can join me again live from The Oval tomorrow (fingers crossed it doesn't rain)
