  • Welcome to Day Two at The Oval which is slightly soggier than it was yesterday unfortunately. The covers are on the pitch but both sets of players are out warming up so it looks as if play will start on time.

The slightly dramatic news is that Fathers for Justice have allegedly made a threat to put acid on the pitch so there is now heightened security at the ground.

  • It's fair to say that Simon Kerrigan had a bit of a nightmare on debut yesterday...

There was no shortage of advice for the lad. Every punter in the gallery, even those in green and gold, would not have wished a repeat of the pre-lunch flogging administered to Simon Kerrigan. Pitch it up, son, bowl to your field and let fate take care of the rest.

  • Oh no... Just as play was about to start, it's started raining and the covers are coming on. Play will be delayed.

  • Rain radar not looking very good....

  • The rain has reduced to a very light drizzle but I'm still quite doubtful there will be any play before lunch.
    8/22/2013 10:53:55 AM
    8/22/2013 10:55:58 AM
  • The rain is still coming down here but there are brighter skies in the distance so hopefully after lunch we might get some play.
    8/22/2013 11:16:39 AM
  • It's brightening up! But there is still a rather persistent drizzle here so I'm not sure when play might resume. No word yet on when a pitch inspection might take place so it's anyone's guess when we might get to see some cricket today I'm afraid.
    8/22/2013 12:35:50 PM
  • Good news! - There will be a full pitch inspection at 13:55 (provided there is no further rain) so we should get some play before too long. Delighted to hear some of you are tuning in all the way from Adelaide!
    8/22/2013 12:43:38 PM
  • PLAY WILL START AT 14:30 (Provided there is no further rain)
    8/22/2013 1:04:30 PM
  • Players making their way out onto the pitch...
    8/22/2013 1:27:56 PM
  • It'll be James Anderson to Steve Smith...
    8/22/2013 1:28:59 PM
  • Australia 313/4 (Smith 72, Siddle 18)
Steve Smith has Australia's first runs and then first boundary of the day, both squirted off the outside edge past the slips. The first for a couple the second all the way for four. England will want to make the most of these overhead conditions and try and skittle out some cheap wickets.
    8/22/2013 1:33:48 PM
  • Australia 315/4 (Smith 72, Siddle 20)
Stuart Broad kicks things off from the Pavilion End and it's a solid start - just two to Peter Siddle worked off his pads into the leg side.
    8/22/2013 1:39:23 PM
  • Australia 315/4 (Smith 72, Siddle 20)
That's a maiden from Anderson to Smith - who incidentally is closing in on what would be a maiden Test century. Perhaps he'll be feeling a few extra nerves as a consequence.
    8/22/2013 1:44:33 PM
  • Australia 319/4 (Smith 73, Siddle 23)
A slightly lacklustre chase in the field from Anderson allows Siddle to pick up three runs, when it should only have been two and then Smith nicks the strike from the last ball of the over, dabbing it down into the leg side.
    8/22/2013 1:49:15 PM
  • WICKET! Siddle b Anderson - 23
That's the end of the nightwatchman, he misses a straight one from Anderson as he tries to work it off his pads and his stumps get rearranged.
    8/22/2013 1:50:40 PM
  • Australia 320/5 (Smith 74, Haddin 0)
There is some movement here for Anderson who has got the ball going both ways. That delivery was simply too good for Siddle and England have their first breakthrough.
    8/22/2013 1:53:44 PM
  • Australia 320/5 (Smith 74, Haddin 0)
Broad backing up Anderson with some good bowling here, that's a maiden to Smith who was fortunate not to play onto his own stumps - the ball just bouncing over the top as he chopped it down off an inside edge.
    8/22/2013 1:57:34 PM
  • Australia 324/5 (Smith 74, Haddin 4)
Haddin is off the mark with a boundary as Anderson bowls too straight and is clipped into the leg side for four. However he nearly gets his revenge when the Aussie keeper gets a thick outside edge on one but it drops just short of Alastair Cook in the slips.

  • Peter Siddle trudges off after being dismissed for 23

    8/22/2013 2:04:55 PM
  • Australia 327/5 (Smith 74, Haddin 6)
Chris Woakes comes into the attack to replace Anderson as a few drops of rain start to fall again. It's a good over actually, he hits Haddin on the pads and there's a strangled LBW appeal before hitting him with another delivery, this time in a rather more painful area.
    8/22/2013 2:11:58 PM
  • Australia 329/5 (Smith 75, Haddin 6)
Broad is bowling some great stuff here and he completely squares Smith up with an absolute beauty that just nipped away late past his outside edge.
    8/22/2013 2:17:20 PM

    8/22/2013 2:20:38 PM
  • Australia 333/5 (Smith 79, Haddin 6)
The over may have started with a four as Woakes slightly over-pitches (although Pietersen could have probably done better trying to cut it off at mid off) but he recovers well, beating Smith with a beauty to finish the over.
    8/22/2013 2:22:09 PM
  • Australia 351/5 (Smith 83, Haddin 14)
Expensive couple of overs for England as both Broad and Woakes concede a pair of boundaries each. Smith picking up eight from Broad, Haddin the same from Woakes. England really need a wicket to get back into the game here.

    8/22/2013 2:32:00 PM
  • DRINKS: Australia 353/5 (Smith 84, Haddin 15)
Anderson back into the attack but he can't take the wicket England want - hopefully this drinks break will do the trick.
    8/22/2013 2:37:46 PM
  • Australia 353/5 (Smith 84, Haddin 15)
Woakes continues after the break and it's a maiden to Haddin. He still doesn't look very threatening though.
    8/22/2013 2:44:22 PM
  • REVIEW! Haddin plays at one that slides down the leg side and England appeal halfheartedly before deciding to review.
    8/22/2013 2:48:05 PM
  • NOT OUT! Wasted review that, it missed the bat by miles. England looking a bit desperate.
    8/22/2013 2:48:29 PM
  • Australia 358/5 (Smith 85, Haddin 19)
Woakes is bowling economically here but he's not really threatening Australia's batsmen. That's a maiden but England still search for another wicket.
    8/22/2013 2:55:26 PM
  • Australia 359/5 (Smith 85, Haddin 20)
Anderson really should have had a maiden as well here but Broad misfields badly at mid on and Haddin scampers through for a run. That was sloppy.

    8/22/2013 3:00:48 PM
  • Australia 364/5 (Smith 89, Haddin 21)
Crack! Smith pulls away over midwicket for four as Woakes drops one in short - it didn't have nearly enough pace on it and just sat up to be hit.

    8/22/2013 3:04:53 PM

  • Brad Haddin suffers a painful blow

    8/22/2013 3:07:06 PM
  • Australia 369/5 (Smith 93, Haddin 22)
Smith into the 'nervous nineties' now with a well-timed shot that is guided behind point for four. Can he get the seven he needs for a maiden Test ton?
    8/22/2013 3:08:51 PM
  • Australia 370/5 (Smith 93, Haddin 23)
Jonathan Trott, yes Jonathan Trott comes into the attack and it's actually not a bad over. Just a single to Haddin from it.
    8/22/2013 3:14:56 PM
  • 100 for Steve Smith - and he gets there with a straight six off Trott!
    8/22/2013 3:19:00 PM
  • That's Smith's maiden Test hundred and what a way to bring it up.
    8/22/2013 3:19:49 PM
  • Australia 389/6 (Smith 105, Faulkner 0)
The loss of his batting partner doesn't seem to have affected Smith, he cracks Anderson away for four with an excellent extra cover drive.
    8/22/2013 3:21:26 PM
  • Australia 393/6 (Smith 108, Faulkner 1)
Trott continues and the over is most notable for two bits of fielding from Root. One rather poor as he dawdles and allows Faulkner a single to get off the mark, the other excellent as - banished to the boundary - he scampers round to restrict a Smith drive to three.
    8/22/2013 3:31:34 PM
  • Australia 394/6 (Smith 109, Faulkner 1)
Anderson continues from the Pavilion End and he bowls an absolute beauty to Faulkner that somehow misses his outside edge. Just one from the over.
