  • Well - that team is quite a turn up for the books, isn't it?

Arsene Wenger clearly has his eye on a third FA Cup crown because that is an exciting side.

Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud both start but it doesn't look like Le Professeur will stray from his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.
    1/9/2016 2:18:06 PM
  • Alex Iwobi looks set to start on the right while Theo Walcott is in line for a spot on the left flank. But that leaves Joel Campbell to come in at number 10, I presume.

Calum Chambers and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are the likely candidates to start in a midfield two.
    1/9/2016 2:22:51 PM
  • The Ox can play just about anywhere, can't he?

And it's a good job because he hasn't actually made his mind up where he wants to play yet.

"Maybe eventually in the next few years I might have to tie myself down to one and try to become as good as I can in that position. But who knows what the future holds?"

See his full quotes in the link below.

  • Mesut Ozil has -finally - been rested by Wenger.

The German has been in inspirational form of late but has - deservedly - been given the day off this afternoon.

I'm sure he'll be in the crowd, or out there somewhere, assisting somebody...

    1/9/2016 2:33:51 PM
  • It's not pretty up in north London this afternoon.

But it looks like the rain is going to hold off.

    1/9/2016 2:37:22 PM
  • Scrambling around for a pre-match long read? I've got what you're looking for.

Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny is closing in on a switch to the Gunners - and you might have heard all about him - but do you know what he's going to bring to the party?

We've spoken to Egyptian football website KingFut to get an expert opinion on the 23-year-old.

"Incredible stamina and can score from 30-yards" - not a bad summary, eh folks?

    1/9/2016 2:41:28 PM

  • 1/9/2016 2:44:27 PM
  • STAT: Arsenal have not lost an FA Cup tie in 12 games. The north Londoners' last defeat arrived in February 2013 when Blackburn won 1-0 at the Emirates in the fifth round.

    1/9/2016 2:49:01 PM

  • 1/9/2016 2:50:32 PM
  • KICK-OFF: Arsenal get us underway....
    1/9/2016 3:00:28 PM
  • 2 mins: It's been a confident start for Arsenal, who are stroking the ball around nicely.

What's clear from the opening exchanges is that this Sunderland side are ready to defend.
    1/9/2016 3:03:44 PM
  • 3 mins: Curse of the commentator! Lens seizes on a loose ball, skips past Koscielny and fires an effort at goal. Cech dives low to his right but the ball flies just past the post.

The visitors weren't scared of pushing men forward there.
    1/9/2016 3:04:53 PM

  • 1/9/2016 3:06:39 PM
  • Formation update: Ox and Chambers are in the midfield two. Campbell is on the right, Walcott is on the left and Mr. Iwobi is at number 10.
    1/9/2016 3:08:52 PM
  • CHANCE! Arsenal have the first sight of goal but Pickford palms Gibbs' effort away! That will do the youngster's confidence the world of good.

    1/9/2016 3:10:16 PM
  • Walcott and Giroud exchange passes before the latter tees up Gibbs, who makes a late run into the box but has to stretch for the ball. The full-back's strike is clean but Pickford is equal to it.
    1/9/2016 3:11:52 PM
  • 13 mins: I think calling that a cross is generous. Awful.

    1/9/2016 3:16:23 PM
  • GOAL! Lens puts Sunderland in front!
    1/9/2016 3:17:36 PM
  • What is Gibbs playing at? He wins the ball back but then gets into a world of trouble and plays a hospital pass to Koscielny.

The Frenchman is dispossessed by Lens, who races clear and smashes the ball past Cech.

You have to say - Sunderland deserve that.
    1/9/2016 3:21:18 PM
  • Gabriel is down injured. He's fallen heavily on his ankle and it looks like his afternoon is  over...

With no Per Mertesacker on the bench, Wenger could be short of options here.
    1/9/2016 3:22:15 PM
  • Nope - he's a tougher cookie than I've given him credit for. The Brazilian is hobbling back onto the pitch and is going to try and run it off.
    1/9/2016 3:23:38 PM
  • GOAL! Campbell equalises with a cracking finish!
    1/9/2016 3:26:38 PM
  • Iwobi breaks down the left flank and flicks the ball back across the box. Campbell cuts inside to meet it and slots home with a perfectly controlled finish.

That's more like it from the home side.

    1/9/2016 3:29:02 PM
  • Ozil liked that one!

    1/9/2016 3:30:43 PM
  • 29 mins: Oxlade-Chamberlain is the latest Arsenal player to have a crack from long range but he drags his effort wide of the target.
    1/9/2016 3:31:40 PM
  • 34 mins: Cattermole has a chance to shoot after a Sunderland corner is half cleared and....well, let's say he doesn't make the most of it. Miles over.
    1/9/2016 3:36:48 PM
  • 38 mins: Oxlade-Chamberlain threads a superb through ball between two Sunderland defenders and Walcott is onto it like a flash.

So too is Pickford, who does well to come off his line and reach the ball before the Gunners front man.
    1/9/2016 3:41:34 PM

  • 1/9/2016 3:42:01 PM
  • 43 mins: Oxlade-Chamberlain breaks forward, beats one defender and flies into the Sunderland half. He chooses to pass to Gibbs rather than go on alone and Lens comes back to cover with a cracking tackle.

The Dutchman is having a blinder. He's everywhere.
    1/9/2016 3:46:39 PM
  • 45 + 2 mins: Arsenal are finishing the half strongly. Campbell pulls off a superb dummy inside the area but can't get his shot away.

The ball falls to Oxlade-Chamberlain who, in turn, finds Iwobi, but the youngster's effort is tame and Sunderland get away with it.
    1/9/2016 3:49:44 PM
    1/9/2016 3:50:05 PM
  • Allardyce will have a wry smile on his face at the break but Wenger definitely won't.

Arsenal have been off the pace and sloppy. They need to pull their socks up in the second half or this one could slip away from them.

Sunderland have made plenty of changes but they still look like the hungrier of the two sides.
    1/9/2016 3:51:48 PM
  • SNAPSHOT: Lens, who has been the best player on the park, fires Sunderland into the lead.

    1/9/2016 3:54:30 PM
  • Should Arsene ring the changes?

I don't know how Giroud hasn't made the cut in Sacha's cull because he has been nowhere. The Frenchman is having one of those days.

Sunderland aren't exactly set up to cope with pace (what side including O'Shea is?) and Walcott looks like he would be a better option up top.
    1/9/2016 3:58:47 PM

  • 1/9/2016 3:59:56 PM
  • Not. Happy.

    1/9/2016 4:02:32 PM
  • 46 mins: Sunderland get us underway for the second half....
    1/9/2016 4:04:19 PM
  • No changes for either side at the break so it's as we were.
    1/9/2016 4:05:13 PM
  • Arsenal are definitely missing Ozil's delivery....

    1/9/2016 4:07:12 PM
  • 51 mins: Arsenal have settled into their groove in the early stages of this half. Sunderland look to have retreated somewhat. The visitors need to stay on the front foot of the hosts are going to overrun them.
    1/9/2016 4:12:03 PM
  • 54 mins: I'm not sure what the message was in the Sunderland dressing room at half time but the visitors look far less confident since the break.

    1/9/2016 4:14:39 PM
  • OFF THE POST! Oxlade-Chamberlain's curler cannons back off the upright!
    1/9/2016 4:15:58 PM
  • The 22-year-old is so unlucky. He swivels to make himself a bit of space on the edge of the area and curls an effort around Pickford but his effort clips the post.

The ball flies back into play but Walcott can't direct the rebound on target.
    1/9/2016 4:17:46 PM
  • OFF THE BAR! Fletcher's header hits the upright!
    1/9/2016 4:18:39 PM
  • Lens floats a cross towards the back post and Cech loses flight of the ball. Fletcher is there to meet it but can only direct his header onto the frame of the goal. A let off for Arsenal. This is end-to-end stuff.
    1/9/2016 4:20:51 PM
  • CHANCE! Arsenal have a cracking chance to take the lead but Pickford rushes off his line to deny Campbell. The youngster is playing out of his skin.
    1/9/2016 4:21:46 PM

  • 1/9/2016 4:25:57 PM
  • 67 mins: Ramsey is given an immediate chance to stretch his legs. The Welshman races up the left wing and finds Gibbs, who sprays a low ball across the box into the old corridor of uncertainty.

Giroud makes a run across the near post but the ball is just out of his reach and Pickford collects.
    1/9/2016 4:27:35 PM
  • Meanwhile, Standard Sport reporter James Benge is eating a generous portion of Joel Campbell shaped humble pie...

    1/9/2016 4:28:53 PM
  • CHANCE! Gibbs picks out Walcott with a measured cross but the forward's shot is too close to Pickford.

That was almost identical to Campbell's goal but the Englishman couldn't provide the finish.
    1/9/2016 4:30:02 PM
  • GOAL! Ramsey puts Arsenal in front!
    1/9/2016 4:30:13 PM
  • Bellerin's pace is enough to get the Spaniard away from Graham and the full-back fizzes a ball across the face of goal.

Ramsey is in the right place at the right time and produces a neat finish from close range to put the hosts in charge.
    1/9/2016 4:33:28 PM
  • GOAL! Giroud pokes home from close range and that should be that!
    1/9/2016 4:34:39 PM
  • Bellerin is on fire and grabs his second assist of the game. A tiring Graham hasn't been able to cope with the Spaniard and he breaks into the box before picking Giroud out at the back post.

The Frenchman taps home courtesy of the simplest of finishes.
    1/9/2016 4:37:17 PM
  • 78 mins: Giroud has a decent shout for a penalty but Sunderland race up the other end and only a superb save from Cech denies Graham to keep Arsenal two goals in front.
    1/9/2016 4:38:02 PM

  • 1/9/2016 4:41:03 PM

  • 1/9/2016 4:45:14 PM
  • Pickford has been superb in the Sunderland goal.

    1/9/2016 4:51:33 PM
    1/9/2016 4:54:06 PM
  • Arsenal certainly made hard work of that, but they got there in the end.

An early strike from Lens had Sunderland dreaming of an upset but strikes from Campbell, Ramsey and Giroud put the game to bed.

Arsenal march into the fourth round and their quest for a third consecutive FA Cup triumph is on!

  • Danny Mills on BBC Final Score: "Arsenal scored some fantastic goals throughout the game and remarkably Arsene Wenger has still never gone out in the third round.

"He's never had that shock or giant-killing and they've had some tough draws.

"Arsenal just got better and better as the game went on and scored great footballing goals with plenty of one-twos and clinical finishes."
