  • The Apple store is down, meaning only one thing...

    9/10/2013 4:26:43 PM
  • How will the new iPhone finger print scanner affect digital banking? David Webber, managing director of Intelligent Environments, predicts how the new iPhone finger print security will make Brits 40% more likely to access bank accounts via smartphones:

Apple’s new iPhone fingerprint scanner is set to trigger a huge upswing in the number of Brits accessing their bank accounts via a mobile phone.  According to our research, two fifths (40%) of UK consumers would be more likely to access their bank accounts via a smartphone if it had a built-in fingerprint scanner, that’s equivalent to over 18.4 million UK consumers.

  • With fifteen mins to go what are the greatest hopes for the new iPhone?  Battery life seems to be high on the list:

Yada yada, get to the phones Cook!
    9/10/2013 5:10:19 PM

  • iOS7 is the first serious item of business on the menu. Big promises from Craig Federighi (head of software) who comes on to show off iOS 7:

We've been hard at work on iOS 7.. and next month we will ship the 700 millionth iOS device.. and since we make updates easily and available to as many customers as possible.. iOS 7 will quickly become the world's most popular operating system.

    9/10/2013 5:11:51 PM
  • Federighi is giving an iOS 7 walkthrough: commuting, app updates, Safari, Siri, sounds

He points out that there's a "commute help" - when you tell it where you live and where you work, it will warn you about commute times.

Apps can be updated in background.

Safari  comes on a sort of rolerdex, with multiple screens.

Siri is "massively improved" apparently. Federighi says  "What's Lady Gaga saying?" and it searches on Twitter.

    9/10/2013 5:17:41 PM
  • "It's like getting a whole new device" says Federighi!

    9/10/2013 5:19:03 PM
  • iTunes radio is getting an upgrade. Federighi says:

Over 200 features.. and our developer community has been hugely inspired.. you'll see many more coming into the App Store.
    9/10/2013 5:20:42 PM
  • iPhoto is now free as is iTunes radio - not on Mac but for iPhone. Presumably in competition with Google here...
    9/10/2013 5:21:40 PM
  • iPhone is now on agenda!
    9/10/2013 5:21:55 PM
  • iPhone 5 apparently the most succesful model ever - best sales in a first year says Federighi.

    9/10/2013 5:22:27 PM
  • Two news models are to be relased

    9/10/2013 5:22:58 PM

  • Phil Schiller, head of marketing, comes on to have his turn...
    9/10/2013 5:23:38 PM
  • Says Schiller:
A few of you may have seen some shots on the web and that's cool as it shows everyone's excited about it

    9/10/2013 5:24:51 PM

  • A video: showing lime green, strawberry pink, sky blue, lemon yellow, white - phones. "This is iPhone 5C."
    9/10/2013 5:25:45 PM
  • "Made with all the incredible technology that customers have loved with the iPhone 5.. more colourful than any iPhone we've made yet. A few of you may have seen some shots on the web.. and that's cool.. but you haven't really seen it yet"
    9/10/2013 5:26:14 PM
  • Hard coated polycarbonate - the buzzprhrase that describes the iPhone 5C - sounds marginally better than plastic...
    9/10/2013 5:28:57 PM
  • "As close as you look you won't see seams or part lines. Vibrant icons, translucency, it creates an entire experience of colour. And it doesn't stop with the phone design."

And cases too, made of silicon.
    With cutouts.

    9/10/2013 5:31:33 PM
  • iPhone 5C prices:

$99 for 16GB on contract model

$199 for 32GB on contract model

  • First reactions on new prices are positive:

    9/10/2013 5:34:52 PM
  • Phil Schiller announces:

The most forward-thinking phone we've ever created, perhaps that anyone has ever made. Packed with incredible technologies in service of using these in the way we want to

    9/10/2013 5:35:31 PM
  • Champagne gold! It is confirmed.
    9/10/2013 5:36:03 PM
  • Black has apparently been renamed as "space grey".

    The mind doth boggle.
    9/10/2013 5:36:30 PM

  • Specifications:

    The 5S is a 64bit smartphone.
    9/10/2013 5:37:52 PM
  • Apple announce the new phone is now double the speed of the previous model. Not bad.
    9/10/2013 5:39:29 PM
  • It's all impenetrable tech talk at the moment:

"the first-ever in a phone of any kind.. the PC world took years to go from 32 bit to 64 bit. We're going to do it in one day, with hardware, and all-new applications."

"A 64-bit desktop-class architecture. Over a billion transistors. 2 floating point registers. iOS 7 has been reengineered for 64-bit as well. All built-in apps re-engineered. This is seamless for customers."

  • Games demo....

A distinctly unthrilling guide to some gaming features on the 5C. Details about release date and price would be more appreciated.

  • More pics coming in of the iPhone 5C. Here are the colours available:

    by Joseph Charlton

    9/10/2013 5:50:47 PM
  • Details on the iPhone 5S  Camera:

Automatically does auto white balance, exposure, dynamic local tone map (for highlights and shadows), autofocuson and picks sharpest one of multiple photos...
    9/10/2013 5:53:04 PM
  • The best shot analysis looks good: intuitive and functional feature.
    9/10/2013 5:53:44 PM
  • Next feature is slo-mo for the camera:

Capturing HD video at 720p at 120 frames per second.. all these are simply in service of taking a great picture

    9/10/2013 5:56:26 PM
  • iPhone 5S battery life

Probably the most important data for day-to-day users:

10 hours 3G talk, 10 hours LTE browsing, 10 hours of video

    9/10/2013 5:58:32 PM
  • SECURITY

iOS7 will teach the iPhone to recognise your fingertip. It will protect your phone but also be used for authenticiating iTunes purchases etc.
    9/10/2013 6:00:45 PM
  • Does this mean thugs will now steal thumb with iPhone?
    9/10/2013 6:01:04 PM

  • No! Apparently "dead thumbs don't work"...

    Bad luck, thieves.
    9/10/2013 6:02:11 PM

  • Schiller justifies the fingerprint system for the following reason:

A passcode.. some people find it too cumbersome. In our research about half of smartphone customers do not set up a passcode on their device, and they really, really should.

We have also just been reassured that Apple will not keep a database of fingerprints. So - Apple not in league with the NSA? Or perhaps the NSA has quite enough personal info as it is.
    9/10/2013 6:04:25 PM
  • RECAP:

    • iPhone 5C confirmed, in green, yellow, blue, white and pink

    • iPhone 5S confirmed in black, silver and gold
    • First ever 64-bit processor in a smartphone
    • Finger print 'touch ID' on home button

We're also being told the iPhone 4S will NOT be put out of service.
    9/10/2013 6:07:27 PM
  • A guest is being brought out...

Elvis Costello is on stage to celebrate the launch.

Could they have found a trendier guest? It's certainly a safer bet than Kanye West - a previous guest.
    9/10/2013 6:12:53 PM
  • Elvis Costello is playing a Nick Lowe song. Couldn't they have just got Nick Lowe?
    9/10/2013 6:14:19 PM
  • So far, there haven't been any "wow" moments. There's nothing that hasn't been leaked or rumoured already.
    9/10/2013 6:16:58 PM
  • END OF THE SHOW:

Elvis plays is playing out Apple with (What's So Funny About) Peace, Love and Understanding..

So not many surprises here. No Apple TV, no Apple Watch and no new iPads. Most of what we've heard tonight has been confirmation of what's already leaked.
    9/10/2013 6:21:23 PM
  • Tributes are pouring in on Twitter for the new Nokia ad mocking Apple. Here it is below:
    9/10/2013 6:24:16 PM
  • 'The death of the password': Breaking comment on iPhone launch from experts

David Webber, managing director of Intelligent Environments, says iTouch technology will inspire more bank customers to access their accounts via smartphones:

This development will trigger a biometric banking revolution, which spells the death of the password as we know it.

Currently, more than a quarter of Brits (27%) avoid using digital banking altogether due to the hassle of using a pin sentry or card reader to access their account. In fact, as many one in eight (13%) are effectively locked out of their account as they’ve lost their pin sentry.

Biometric authentication will change all this. The new iPhone will do for passwords what iTunes did for CDs. It won’t be long before the majority of mobile devices incorporate biometric authentication and with banks keen to ensure the highest levels of security for their customers, it will be interesting to see which bank will be the first to integrate it into its mobile banking apps

    9/10/2013 6:37:22 PM
  • BUSINESS UPDATE: APPLE STOCK FALLS

Apple's stock is down 2.87% The problem seems to be that the iPhone 5C - the supposedly low cost iPhone - isn't cheap enough. Investors were expecting the cost of the 5C to be around $500 or less, but the actual price is $549 off contract.

    9/10/2013 6:45:34 PM
  • Fingerprint ID will save time, and the cam looks terrific. I already sell framed prints from iP 4S images, so this ought to take things up a notch or two.
    9/10/2013 6:47:06 PM
  • Some excellent analysis of Apple's new colour range here:

    9/10/2013 6:55:45 PM
  • SECURITY & iTOUCH FEATURE: FINGERPRINT STORED ON DEVICE ONLY

So, after an evening of relatively few surprises - Apple basically confirmed everything that had been leaked earlier in the week - the big talking point is likely to concern Apple's new security measures.

Here's what Apple have said regarding their new feature, iTouch:

All fingerprint information is encrypted and stored securely in the Secure Enclave inside the A7 chip on the iPhone 5s; it’s never stored on Apple servers or backed up to iCloud.

I'm sure we can expect more enquiries into this in the coming days and weeks. After Edward Snowden and the NSA fiasco, this certainly comes as a relief - but will users (and sceptical Americans in particular) buy it?

    9/10/2013 7:07:03 PM
  • BUSINESS UPDATE: APPLE STOCK NOW DOWN BY 3%

Not a crash but not good  - and certainly not what investors were hoping for. One possible cause for concern is how easily news leaked about every product that Apple "revealed". Without any major surprises to take from the launch who can be surprised that investors faltered?
