FULL TIME: France 0-1 Germany.

Courtesy of a Mats Hummels pummelled header in the first half, the Germans continue on their impervious journey to the final. Next week's semi-final will be their fourth in a row.

Karim Benzema's last minute chance, which forced Manuel Neuer into a one-handed save, had them worried though. The winners from tonight's clash between Brazil and Costa Rica await them in the semi-finals.

Jack Pitt-Brooke, as always, is on hand with his post-match insight.

This Germany team have been criticised for years for not showing nous and efficiency that they always used to. This performance, though, was an answer of sorts with an impressively controlled and professional display in which, for the most part, they held France at arm's length.

Joachim Low's changes were largely vidicated, with Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng impressibly mobile at centre-back and the midfield providing important protection. Deschamps, though, looked passive as he failed to change the game in the second half, his team showing nowhere near the required urgency for a World Cup quarter-final.
